I was interested in the claim that the loyalty points system has harmed overall away attendance, so thought I’d have a look at the numbers. I can’t find any details for the season immediately before the points system came in for the Prem, but for 2004-05 we had the following vs teams in the division currently from what I’ve been able to find:
- Preston (1-0, Gray) - Fri 20 Aug, 12,084 (768 away), think it was on Sky and Jags was sent off
- QPR (1-0, Gray) - Tues 31 Aug, 13,804 (840 away)
- Wigan (0-4) - Sat 18 Sep, 10,682 (2,257 away), travelled there from Edinburgh, Jags had a mare, we had the whole stand on the side
- Ipswich (1-5, Bromby) - Tues 2 Nov, 22,977 (468 away)
- Derby (1-0, Quinn) - Sat 20 Nov, 25,725 (2,612 away)
- Millwall (2-1, Liddell, GEARY) - Sat 4 Dec, 11,207 (648 away), “serves you right for Muscat that”
- Rotherham (2-2, Tonge, Shaw) - Sat 11 Dec, 8,195 (2,823 away)
No data for Reading (18,889) or Leeds (28,936)
QPR this year on a Saturday attendance was 14,128 (away 1,969). Last year on a Tuesday night it was 13,604 (away 1,853). Both over double our 2004/05 total.
Millwall this year 13,145 (away 1,637), last year 12,669 (1,883), both on saturdays and both over double our 2004/05 total.
Preston last season 15,202 (away 3,850), over 5 times the 2004/05 total (though that was on Sky).
Derby last season 30,003 (away 3,109) – bigger than 2004/05.
Ipswich last season 12,057 in the Cup, 15,152 in the league, no numbers I can find I’m afraid, but I was at the Cup game where we must have taken a thousand.
The Loyalty Points system has its flaws (and I would personally like to see it changed) but I can’t see any evidence that it’s somehow been responsible for reducing our away attendances – mainly because they seem to have increased quite a fair bit.
