United 4 Luton 1, Easter Saturday 1978.

The day Stainrod was denied a hattrick by the ball sticking in the mud on the line.

All I can remember is the torrential rain.

i don't really remember my 1st game my dad started taking me when i was 3
early memories are of Bristol away end of season game in the 80's and the liverpool game where pemberton had to go in goal as tracey got injured and deane scored by lobbing it from about 40 yards??

We didn't play Burnley at the Lane between 1967 and 1973, so I reckon this must have been the opening game of the 73-4 season on 25th August when we lost 2-0.

Thanks Darren! I must've got the teams mixed up, because it was definitely no later than 71. I remember the claret and blue and, only being just 7 at the time, I'd always figured it was Burnley. Might have been West Ham or more likely Aston Villa. Also although I think we lost we definitely scored because I remember being totally amazed at how bonkers everyone went, especially the kop.

Any thoughts from the forum Statto? :D

1972, Chelsea Home won 2-0

First with a season ticket, 1975, Derby at home, 1-1 draw........went down that season.

We won 2-1 in the Chelsea game - 16/9/72 - Dearden and Woodward pen scored and the goals are on the YTV highlights video.

1984. Home v Orient. A win for the Blades 6-3. Old Division 3 i think.

Sat on the BL upper tier and cheered for all 9 goals as i was 6 and retarded.

The major memory i have of that time is that there were not a lot of other people about i suspect because we were usually rubbish and my dad didn't want to take me in the kop where there were ruffians. I didn't pursuade him to stand at a match until i was well into my teens and we were away agaisnt Burnely in the snowy cup replay in the mid 1990's (Darren ???) and Adrian Littlejohn was racially abused. I remember a fat Blade turning up very late in that Burnley match with a rucksack full of hot sausage rolls that he appeared to have stolen from a buttie shop / tea canteen and handing them out.

Back to the orient game, darren, could you let me know who scored and if i'm right about the year and division? Ta mate.

The Orient game was on 3/3/84. We went 2-0 up earlish through 2 Edwards goals and Orient got one back back before HT. Come the 2nd half United did their falling apart routine and were 3-2 down after around 10 mins. We then bombarded the Orient goal and got level through a pen - there was a corner and Stancliffe (I think) headed towards goal only to see the Defender on the line catch the ball! (the next programme had a pic of this with the Defender holding the ball on the ground with a wry smile on his face). Only a booking for that in those days, but Morris scored the pen.

Cue a continuation of the siege and Edwards eventually put us 4-3 up. As was usual in those days, United allowed Orient back into the game and there were some worrying moments until, with about 5 mins left, Tom Heffernan picked up the ball at right back and ran the length of the pitch down the right wing before blasting the ball past (I think) Mervyn Day in the Orient goal.

That was that, but there was still time for Edwards to be brought down in the area in injury time and for Morris to score the pen - it didn't seem to matter at the time, but if that pen had not been scored we wouldn't ultimately have been promoted.

The Burnley game was on 12/1/92. We won 4-2. Deane 3 and Littlejohn scoring.

1976 ish against Fulham, who had Best, Marsh (and maybe Moore), we won 2-0 or 2-1 i think. We were in the New South Stand and presented with our Star soccer coaching certificates at half time.

There was a 1-1 draw agsint Fulham on 16/10/76, Woodward scoring and a 2-1 win on 29/10/77, Woodward and Hamilton scoring, so I am not sure which one you went to!

2 January 1978 aged 4. Old Second Division, and a 2-2 draw v Tottenham. Don't remember much about it, except it was cold, and a long journey from London.

We went 2-o down and game back to get the draw, Edwards and Hamson scoring.

First match was in the late 70's. Think it might have been against Bury but not sure.
The thing that stuck in my mind was entering from the back of the kop & seeing this massive green pitch. Started going regular when we were in the 4th division. Used to get there about 1.30pm. Didn't see much when game started when all the bigger lads had turned up. Plenty of surges! Those were the days... jumpers for goalposts!

That may be the 0-0 draw with Bury on 1/3/80. The last time we played Bury at the Lane before that was 1969.

Mine was 1989/90 season (I think). It was the last home game against Bournmouth which we won 5-2 (i think).

Cant remember that much detail, I remember standing on the kop near the front corner (south stand side), the fences were still up for this game because at the end they opened the gates so we could walk across the pitch. I also remember being picked up and thrown around everytime we scored. Ever since that game I pestured my brother to take me again.

Don't remember goal scorers.

If Darren has anymore info let me know please.

Also if anyone happens to have a programme from that match and willing to part with it let me know. :)

It was on 28/4/90 and the score was 4-2. Bryson 2, Agana and Deane scored.

Blades Norwich in 1992 (I think). They licked us 2-1. Robert Fleck was on fire for Norwich at the time and scored both there goals.

Norwich beat us 1-0 at the Lane on 10/3/93 and 2-1 on 6/11/93 (Whitehouse pen scoring for us). The only game ve Norwich at the Lane in 1992 was our 1-0 victory on 18/1/92 (Bryson).

It can't have been Villa as we didn't play them at the Lane between 1969 (when we won 5-0) and 1976. Games v West Ham at the Lane in the early 70's were a 3-0 win on 29/2/72 (Dearden 3 - played on a Tuesday afternoon during the 3 day week) and a 0-0 draw on 10/3/73 (when Woodward missed a pen).

My dad said my first match was against Blackpool in the mid 1960s but I have no recollection of that match nor the Spain v Switzerland world Cup match at the sty (I was 4). I attended a few games in the late 1960s and remember the 1-0 wins against Norwich and Cardiff in Sept 1969 but I didnt know any of the players names. I became a committed Blade after watching the YTV highlights of us beating Everton by 2-1 in the FA Cup in Jan 1970. My first match as a committed Blade (and starting to learn the names of our players etc) was the 2-0 win against Preston two weeks later

Silent- I remember for that Everton match having to buy a ticket (Large and pink - ooh er missus) which prior to that all cup games were pay on the gate for the Kop. Do you know if this was the first all ticket game I would have attended.

It was Stancliffe. that's a terrifc photo. I think Barry Silkman caught the ball.

Heffernan's was the fifth but I think you've got the Edwards and Morris goals the wrong way round. Edwards got the last, I think, cutting in from the left and bending the ball round the keeper. Morris got 2 penalties in about 10 minutes.

"26/9/84. Morris pen and Edwards for us - Edwards' goal looked suspciously offside."

There's film of this on one of the club videos - Edwards was about 10 to 15 yards offside. A shocking decision, but no one was complaining...

Edwards definitely got the 4th goal and Morris the last. I distinctly remember watching the pen and thinking, what with us 2 up in injury time, it didn't matter if Morris missed.

v Watford 13.08.94 won 3-0 Flo & Mitch got 2 Att 16,820 thanks soccer base

(Late starter when it came to football I blame my Father who had me scrambling for most of my youth then my work took me all round the country for 6 years before settling in Sheffield)

Sat in Bramall Lane lower with 3 mates as there was no JSS just a couple of ballboys to bravely go onto the wasteland to get the ball back. Have no memories of the game but I did remember it was Watford.

Fast forward to present day now sit in JSS with my 3 mates still plus 9 kids between us, looks like we have all evolved nicely especially the lane, least I am bringing my kids up correctly they have had season tickets last 3 years and youngest is 5..

v Watford 13.08.94 won 3-0

My Grandad's last match, some 70 or so years after his first.

Edwards definitely got the 4th goal and Morris the last.

I think you're wrong, but nothing turns on it...

I agree that nothing turns on it, but I am 100% sure I am right :-) It's funny how two people can be so certain of something when one of them is definitely wrong! I will check the old programme tonight and we can resolve this once and for all...

Portsmouth 1 Blades 2 April 1996. Bit far for me first match but think we were visiting relatives at the time so dad took sis to see them and mum took me to the match. :D

I forget how to embed temporarily but there you go :)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLs0cKm1ETE

1972 though, according to that.

My first match was seeing us stuff Chelsea 4-2 on the last day of the 92/93 season. Andy Scott scored on his debut and I think Whitehouse got two. We were 4-0 up until about the 85th minute too!

>1972 though, according to that
heh.. well i am an old git after all.. heh.. posted it at exactly the same time you did

Northern Wartime league 1944/45 I can't for sure remember the team we played, but Tweedy was in goal, so I think it must have been Grimsby Town, unless he was 'guesting' for some other team, anyway we lost.

Didnt realise that the Everton match in 1970 was all ticket. I read that tickets for the Sheffield derby match in Feb 1967 (Bill Punton scoring in our 1-0 win) were sold out days before the match. Did you go to that one?

2-1 home defeat to West Ham in April 1968? hammers wore sky blue shirts with two thin amber hoops across the chest

a 2-2 at home to Tottenham in the 93-94 season, ady Littlejohn got 2 goals that day

What a great day, that one! Wednesdayites had been taking the mickey out of Punton before the match because he was bold and looked about 80 years old. I was right in line at Bramall Lane End when he shot from the left wing, Springett thought he had it covered, but it sneaked in at the bottom corner!
