Yes, it's funny South Essex,

how we can brag that our rivers (notable the Don) are so much cleaner now than they were 40 years ago. (there is a heron now hunts from that curved weir)

All because if you shut down enough manufacturing industry, there isn't enough pollution produced to infect them.

or if you shut down ALL manufacturing industry, there isn't ANY pollution produced to infect them.

And yet we carp at the Chinese for having deadly smog and porpoiseless rivers now.

as the BBC uses a TV camera manufactured in China to show us and I type indignantly on my computer.....

Yep. Same as the anti-fracking mob who don't want the associated risks in producing it here but are perfectly happy to import it at someone else's detriment to their environment.

The phrase I used is a direct quote from my late grandfather. As a kid I used to sit and ask him, 'what was Sheffield like when you were young, Grandad?' and he always used to smile, wink and say, 'it wer grim, lad!' It puzzled me for years, but over time I understood what he was actually saying. Like you say Vorps, lots of improvements (and cleaner air is definitely one) but is it all really any better?

Wise old chuff, even if he never seemed to say much!

The old boy was right, SEB - in the early 50s, I suffered from bronchitis, wandering around sounding like a goose in the fog, I even managed bronchial pneumonia once. When I went to junior school, it turned out that every kid had had the same thing!

I bet everyone in Sheffield had at least one relative who died of emphysema.

Remember it well going through the Smog. Could go on for days. The city was invisible from Holly Thorpe Rise while waiting for the bus and no doubt from other places as well.
What a difference there was when the clean air act was enforced.

Dismembering and moving a monument to war dead and disappearing it sums up the dickhead level of thought in local authorities.

Having tangled with a few of them, I don't believe local democracy in England has anything to contribute in it's present form. Sack the officers, save the money, run things centrally while we have a good think about what might actually work.

The first thing I would do is have a look at the way they do it in Germany or Holland and probably give outsiders the jobs in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster etc.

I'd be well up for having a local authority totally controlled by foreigners.

Bollocks.
The fella running Penistone Road should be in charge.
