Before everyone jumps down my throat this is not a criticism of Wilder as I think he is doing a fantastic job.

However I dont buy into a lot of peoples philosophy of everytime we sign someone (Washington as an example) that because Wilder has signed him everything will be ok. The above list emphasises that his track record on signings isnt all that. For every Leon theres a Holmes for every Duffy theres a Leonard etc etc.

That said if anyone is going to get a player up and firing then its Wilder. Just down believe in all this " if hes good enough Wilder, he's good enough for me" rubbish.

We’ve done well to make a profit on them.

Realistically last season was about finding some bargains from the lower leagues to try and make a step up. Didn’t quite work out but they were of the right age so we didn’t loose any money (bar homes)

Sometimes you just can’t judge what’s between a players ears. Until you’re day to day with em.

Don’t forget CW is still on a learning curve at this level and on the whole he seems to be doing ok. He also appears to have that ruthless streak that all good managers have in that if you ain’t good enough you’re moved on.

I imagine part of the reason we took a flyer on these players (the permanent ones anyway) is that we knew they’d have resale value if it didn’t work out. And lo...

But, he buys carefully, sells cleverly, and we hardly lose out, or are affected by any sales he makes......
Profit is not a dirty word!!

Excluding Wilson who we didn't buy, they all steadied the ship last season when we'd had a terrible Coutts Injury - JTW period. We were better after the JTW than we were before it minus Coutts so they were polyfilla but sooner or later you need start again and replaster, it's just sooner than you'd have thought innit

I said it back then and other threads since, Wilder had a stinker in the last JTW.

However it takes humility to move them on so soon and he will inevitably face criticism about it.

I think to balance the desperate, unnecessary spending in Jan 2018 he had an excellent August 2018. The squad is stronger all around & it should consolidate our position as a championship side this season, maybe even flirt with play offs...

That fucking worked out well then didn't it?

On this trend, if I was Lundstram, I wouldn't be making any long term financial commitments in Sheffield :D

Lundstram is utterly dreadful, he's lucky to have survived this purge.

Still despite the missteps we're still stronger than this time last year.

Probably because Wilder had been chasing them for so long everyone thought they must be the messiah. Then again so were Hammond and Adkins but that’s very conveniently forgotten on here!

It's all a bit mental. No way I thought all 4 would be gone. Barely made a mark between them.

Nobody expected this! CW's chief weapon is surprise!... Surprise and fear... fear and surprise... His two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency! CW's three weapons are fear, and surprise, and ruthless efficiency... and an almost fanatical devotion to the Blades... His four... no... Amongst CW's weapons... Hmf... Amongst his weaponry... are such elements as fear, surpr...

the key on the Leonard one on the last line of The Star report,

"" Leonard became the second member of Wilder's squad to leave the club during the closing stages of the loan window. The midfielder had been linked with Neil Harris' side before heading north midway through last term and will eventually command a fee in excess of £1m.""

if we get back +1m for him , who is not a regular first team selection. Plus we made money on the sale of Evans , again who would only be a part time selection with our current midfield and Coutts to return, these are excellent deals to get them off our wage bill, raise decent money in the bargain and replace with better standard players.

Lavery going to is no surprise and whatever modest wage he is on will also help by another team paying it

I suspect this is why the Board are slowly being more supportive of Wilder as they recognise he will not simply do a Clough and accumulate 40 first team squad members all bleeding wages out and not necessarily playing

By no means has Wilder got all his transfers spot on, but as someone else said, where he sees they are not working out he moves them on fast and gets a return on the funds paid out

We have to trust him

I still think that there is a player in there. He has a great eye for a tackle and has a nice range of passing.

His biggest problem last season was people expected him to fill Coutts boots.

He's young and will get better. I'm very glad he remains our player.

All about opinions innit.......

He turns like a barge and from what I've seen his range of passing extends to being able to overhit all his passes by a couple of feet whether he's playing it 5 yards or 60. But as you say, opinions.

I agree he gets caught out and can look very slow but I think he felt under pressure to create things, hence the Hollywood pass attempts.

He started playing regularly when Coutts got injured and at the same time one or two others weren't performing as well as they had earlier in the season. As I said, I think there is a player in there.

All four players in the o/p were worth a punt for me.. Wilson was only a young loan player who didn't get that much game time to be fair...Good that we're seeing players moved on quickly, and for a profit when things haven't worked out.

Evans - Norwood
Holmes - Washington
Leonard - Bryan
Wilson - Johnson
Lavery - McGoldrick
Brooks - Woodburn
Blackman - Henderson
Carruthers - Egan

Not exact fits but for those going out (albeit on loan for some) there is a pattern that we’re bringing players in from higher levels

I’m guessing that whilst the jan 2018 signings were adequate for a side consolidating, were now looking to sign players that are able to push us to the next level

Bryan, Woodburn and Washington come with decent pedigrees they just haven’t shown it yet (understandably)

We’re evolving

An excellent point.

CW has admitted things didn't work out for some lads and moved them on. They will have opportunities elsewhere and they aren't stealing a wage here in the stiffs.

Think Adkins trying to bullshit the fans with the 'unseen work' or Clough persevering with players who just weren't good enough, just to show he was like his dad. We may not be involved professionally in the game, but trying to pull the wool over our eyes does not end well.

The half full brigade will see it as a wonderful opportunity to have a pop at Wilder (poor judgement) AND the club (lack of ambition with bargain basement buys). He just can't win.
