I always remember Gannon as a bit of a scapegoat. In fact, when I say his name, its in an exasperated “Gaanneern,” (as a joke to my mate, whenever it goes wrong on set pieces now) Quick free kicks into the defenders legs, short corners, no doubt he was an excellent player, and I probably noticed him at the end of his career, or when he was in a bad patch. It was a long time ago!

I used to berate Gannon with some colourful language. Then took my son to his soccer school where he would show how to hit a 40 yard pass with backspin and get it to stop dead on a 50p piece (slight exaggeration). Got me thinking that if I thought he was crap just how good were those others - lovely fella as well.

As the guy who stood next to me on the John Street terrace use to say, “Gannon delivers more chips than McCains”.

He wasn’t wrong

Was that the one up at High Storrs? I used to play up there on a Saturday morning.

My brother broke his leg playing up there. To cheer him up, Gannon brought Simon Tracey round to our house to sign his cast etc. I agree, lovely man.

Nah Westfield school , about 20 years ago....blimey

Thanks. Contradictory? If you mean the comparison with Sharp, the big difference is Hogan can play on the shoulder facing the goal.A big difference. We don't having any player that does that, not even a midfielder who runs the other side of the strikers (jury still out on Woodburn).I think we're missing this type of striker and that player would thrive in our system. It would also give the midfielders space to inflict even more damage, as the opposition would be wary of runs in behind. The way to contain us at the minute is to play a high line, congest the midfield, and force us to go down our left hand side. There is a limited counter attacking threat, and the chance of a goal from a run in behind are small. When you counter us: attack the space in between the wing backs and the right sided and left sided center backs. Ideally play 4-3-3 and leave two pacy wide players in these positions ala Swansea. We're not that far away from being an exceptional side at this level imo.

I really don't know about this guy Hogan. I think your arguments are very well constructed btw - it's hard to argue with any of that (much as I'd like to!) ;). But I'm not convinced. I'm basing that on seeing Hogan maybe 3 or 4 times, so, not much of a sample to base my impressions on, and that's all they are, impressions. But I may have mentioned on here, I was abroad somewhere recently and put the TV on in my hotel room and it was a re-run of Villa v ...I dunno, forgotten now, but it was a Cup match from the start of last season. I didn't remember how it ended so, with nothing else on TV apart from foreign language shite, I sat down and watched it. Hogan was playing for Villa and he scored in the first few minutes. I was very keen to watch his game closely as we were being linked with him. He was constantly drifting offside and he got subbed mid-way through the second half. I saw nothing in between that made me think, "Wow! He's one hell of a player".

And so you look back at his career and he's had one good season at this level, at Brentford. And that's it. And Villa were daft enough to pay £12M for him? Jayzus Christ - no wonder they've got themselves in financial difficulties. The facts are that Villa want shut of him asap, but no one is going to be daft enough to pay anywhere near that kind of money. We can talk about his style of play and tactics and formations and stuff, but just hold on a moment and consider one thing above all others...the guy has been a complete flop - let's not dress it up any other way. That's the biggest concern I have - I know it doesn't always work out for players at every club - but if we are going to break the bank in terms of wages then we'd better be sure that this guy is going to add a whole new dimension to our team - because if he doesn't then we'll have a lot of very disillusioned players in that dressing room. I see this as unnecessarily high stakes for a player like this.

Very disappointed this hasn't hit 50 pages yet.......

Almost want a loss on Saturday now

Fook that! Haha
Although... for the gamblers out there... I can’t believe Bolton are 16-5 (evens for the win or draw) at home after the start they’ve made. If they beat Birmingham tonight surely that price will disappear. It’s a win win, either your bet wins or the Blades pick up some points! Can’t loose! haha

Even the Bolton fans accept that they are currently in a totally false position.

They’ve had a fair amount of luck in all their league games this season.
The stats show that in every game the opposition has dominated the matches regards possession, shots and corners.
Based on their performances to date, they could end up near the bottom of the league by the end of the season.

So you’re saying I should leave them off the coupon then! Tbh I’m glad you’ve said that actually cos it never does sit quite right does it!

And at this time, a friend shall lose his friend's hammer and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers, that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight o'clock.

And there shall in that time be rumours (oops - wrong thread)

"Still rather be in their position though"

I used to berate Gannon with some colourful language.

The anger is very long-lasting for some. There used to be someone near where I had a season ticket between 2007-2010 on the Kop that would intermittently scream “Fucking Hell, Kill Gannon!”

Seemed quite extreme – I mean he wasn’t that bad, and I would have thought he should have been paying more attention at the time to some dodgy defending that we were watching.

Bolton seem to be soaking up pressure (rope a dope style) almost deliberately setting up defensively (even when they’re at home), they are organised and defending really well but there’s loads of action in their area. They don’t attack much, but hit teams on the break playing direct and it’s bringing them success so far.

Not sure that style of play can keep working. I’m quite confdent we won’t lose on Saturday.

It’ll be interesting to see if now that they are in the top half will they be more attacking/ ambitious against us.

Well if that’s the case then I hope they stick with it. Never understood the ‘invite teams on’ approach to a game.

I’ve not seen them this year of course. Just saw some good results and a big price. It’ll be interesting to see how they got on tonight. I’m sure CW and the boys will be hitting that red button. UTB

The sit back, soak up the pressure style seems to work with great success for Athletico Madrid.
I remember the Arsenal- Athleti game in the Europa Cup semi final.

Arsenal dominated both legs, had loads of attacks but didn’t really look like scoring, lots of goal mouth scrambles but nothing clear cut.
Whereas Athleti didn’t have many attacks but were deadly and seemed to have a casual confidence they could win 1-0

Who’d have thought it? Phil Parkinson modelling his team on Athletico Madrid ha.
