How far offside?

It was approximately 3 international time zones offside, and I'm still quite shocked at the poor standard of officiating. The entire ground could see it was miles off. A combination of good work from Hendo and their striker bottling it saved them from an embarrasingly illegal goal being scored. This is why some people in the game want referees and assistants to be available for interview after the game. It would clear up a lot of confusing decisions for fans and add an element of public oversight.

For the avoidance of doubt this is the moment the Norwich player played the ball forward, it’s a clear offside, not yards, but clear....

If Stevens had just taken a step forward it would have been much clearer that there were two Norwich players in our half and none of our outfield players.

Just watched this again and I think I've made some sense of it, but I can't figure out why no flag at the end.

Something like...

Jack tackles, the ball rebounds off their player, it looks for all the world like their 10 is going to run on to the ball, (he's the one who is miles offside) so the linesman starts to put up his flag, but their 22, running from his own half and miles onside, could also get there.

No-one is offside yet.

Fortunately for us they don't organise themselves (22 could easily have shouted to 10 for instance - collectively poor/brainless "decision-making", really), 10 only becomes offside when he plays the ball.

At which point the linesman maybe should have flagged, but as the save had been made, we were in unchallenged possession and the game can continue, perhaps he doesn't have to.

Maybe it was very good work by that official.
For me it was only ever #10 going to get on the end of it, and even if he was waiting for him to play the ball before flagging he touched it twice outside the box before shooting. No excuse not to flag.

I’ll clear this up. Not offside due to us only having one defender in our half. If we had two in our half when ball’s played it’s offside. So it’s definitely onside.

The goalkeeper counts as a defender

Didnt wilder say to Radio Sheffield. That even if he scored. 4th official told wilder dont worry it wouldve been disallowed for offside

If Stevens did that, then he wouldn't have been offside.

You can't play someone offside if you are in their half. Likewise, you can't be offside if you run from your own half (because of point no.1)

He did but he's a lying piggy bastard with yellow teeth, so you can't believe a word he says.

Yes you can.

As long as they are in yours.

Had Stevens been in their half it would still have been offside, as the Norwich player was both in our half and didn't have two opposition players between him and the goal when the ball was played forward to him off his own player.

It's offside.

You can’t be offside if you run from your own half because you can’t be offside in your half of the pitch. Nowt to do with which half the defender is stood in

Depends when the ball was played. If you start your run in your own half but the ball was played when you were in the opposition half then you're offside.

Yes, thought ‘when the ball was played’ was assumed as that’s offside basics!

You can if your are in the opponents half by the time the ball is played forward.

My bad.

I’m more disappointed that the ref allowed their defenders to just drop drinks bottles on the pitch, imagine if one of our players turned an ankle on one...

The ref clearly saw their defender drop the bottle and did fuck all, then allowed play to continue.

he was an idiot...
