For the chance that Henderson pulled off that fantastic save?

Seriously, how far offside were they all?

I looked at the linesman as it happened live and he seemed to stop and put both hands on the flag as if he was going to raise it, then for some reason He put it down and chased after them down the line.

Can anybody explain how this is onside?

Easy, it was O'Connell that passed the ball. Only if the opposing player made the pass would it be offside. A deflection doesn't count.

Never offside. Just like our goal vs Boro last season was DEFINITELY offside.

Maybe

Surely not? Is that right???

O'Connell won the ball playing it forward, it hits their man and goes the other way? Is that right??

Fuck that, that's wank if true.

I've seen goals given for opposite way around I.e. a striker kicks it but it then hits a defender and rolls to an offside striker and a goal stands.

Not having that ^^^^

Wank decision surely???

I might be wrong, but I think if the opposing player doesn't intend to make a pass it doesn't count

Has to be offside. When the defender clearly kicks the ball the opposite way and it deflects back it has to be offside. Same the other way, if you play it through to someone offside and it glances the defender on the way, it’s still offside. They must have thought JOC slid in and hooked it towards the goal. Great save though !!

But we had a case of obvious deflection that deflected off them and they called offside. My 7 year old was apoplectic

At the time I assumed it had come off our player considering how obvious it seemed.

Looking at it now I'm thankful Henderson showed what a decent keeper he is, and their player isn't a great finisher.

Never mind the offside just watched the highlights back and when they win the ball back there’s a clear red card norwhich player goes straight in stooods up over the ball don’t know how the ref missed it and on the replay fleck looks lucky not to have done a Coutts injury .

It was offside By a good ten yards doesn’t matter whether the Norwich player meant to play it it came off him last and it played forward

For the avoidance of doubt this is the moment the Norwich player played the ball forward, it’s a clear offside, not yards, but clear....

Considering the confusion caused on here due to a certain members lack of rule knowledge I'd like to ask the following.

What if Jack O'Connell cleared the ball and it hit a stray dog (that was counted in the attendance figures) and deflected into the path of Rhodes.

Would third party influence have an affect on the ref/liners decision?

P.S I'm asking on behalf of my friend Bobby.

You’d stop the game as soon as the third party entered the playing area meaning the situation couldn’t occur. Restarted with a drop ball :)

Bobby also wants to know if the dog is up for adoption after.

Just watched this again and I think I've made some sense of it, but I can't figure out why no flag at the end.

Something like...

Jack tackles, the ball rebounds off their player, it looks for all the world like their 10 is going to run on to the ball, (he's the one who is miles offside) so the linesman starts to put up his flag, but their 22, running from his own half and miles onside, could also get there.

No-one is offside yet.

Fortunately for us they don't organise themselves (22 could easily have shouted to 10 for instance - collectively poor/brainless "decision-making", really), 10 only becomes offside when he plays the ball.

At which point the linesman maybe should have flagged, but as the save had been made, we were in unchallenged possession and the game can continue, perhaps he doesn't have to.

Maybe it was very good work by that official.

Ah, just like Morgan intended to foul Stevie G in 2006, didn't but a penalty was given anyway? They can have VAR, fifth, sixth and seventh officials but will still fuck up anyway. It's as if the currenty interpretation of the offside rule is deliberately designed to lead to confusion. How can a lino - often struggling to keep up with play - looking across the field of play tell if a player is involved in the 'first phase', 'second phase' bollocks? It may sound fine in a technical manual, but often frustrates the excitement of the fans - we see a forward pass, there are three defenders between Sharp and their goal but the flag goes up because, ten minutes previously, Billy dared to venture over the halfway line.

The previous interpretation of offside (i.e. two defending players between the goal line and the most forward attacking player when the ball is played...) wasn't perfect but this latest rule is cobblers.

I see Sabella's Socks point, but we shouldn't have to look at replays etc. before - maybe - coming to a conclusion. The officials don't and they're notoriously fallible.
