Unlike many an early round League Cup game down the years this one was played at a good tempo with both teams going hammer and tongs. Irrespective of some daft comments from Hull fans, The Blades were comfortably the better team and would not have been embarrassed by a 3 goal margin. Here's what I took from the game:

Oliver Norwood: immense debut, sprayed the ball around with consummate ease and made a real difference to our attacking threat, especially getting Stevens in behind Hull's right back. He wants the ball, has a good engine and isn't afraid to tackle. He actually made us look threatening from corners - in fact we almost scored from a couple! He is a big improvement on Evans, that's for sure. Excellent singing, just a shame Billy didn't take the first penalty.

Leon: worked tirelessly, linked play well and was positionally strong. So much about his all round play is positive but his big problem is his poor conversion rate of chances. One slide rule through ball from Duffy put him in between their centre backs, his first touch was good but then he lacked the pace to leave the defender behind. He then shot when he should have crossed and later crossed when he should have shot. He's difficult to replace but we might have to because a familiar pattern from last season is emerging, where we are creating good chances but not scoring enough of them.

Ends Stevens: Not sure if Wilder served it up to him at half time at QPR but he improved significantly in the second half and continued in the same vein last night. His final ball, which had been a real weakness in the first few games was first class last night. Several whipped across the six yard box just missing a final touch. He was the main beneficiary of Norwood's presence.

Bash: Never thought he'd develop as an impact player but he really helped us pile on the pressure with his positive forward runs last night. He's been struggling defensively against higher quality Championship players because of his tendency to over commit, miss a tackle and then leave us exposed behind. I suspect Wilder is moving towards Jack, Egan and Stears as his first choice back three. With Norwood's arrival and Coutts nearly ready it's hard to see him starting in the middle so, much as it pains me to say it, Bash may be collecting a few splinters in the months to come.

Moore: Did himself no favours last night. Flapped at a cross, which nearly cost us and never looked close to saving a penalty. A shame because I still rate him as decent but surely now relegated to cover keeper only.

Egan: Looked assured again last night, as he did on Saturday. Aside from being comfortable on the ball he's strong and won't be bullied in aerial battles (last season we struggled to get the ball back upfield against the more direct, physical teams such as Bolton). "Record signing" is always a cross to bear but I'm confident he will do well for us.

Billy: so up for it at present! His goal was sublime and, along with Fleck and Bash, made a big difference to our attacking menace when he came on at half time. He can't do as much as we need outside the box but he is still one of the best finishers in the land. Goal of the season contender, if you haven't seen it yet.

Ben Woodburn: kept losing the ball in the first half and really needed to up his game after the interval. Thankfully, he did and showed great awareness in his movement and passing. Wilder's dilemma here is in whether to give him the run of games he needs to develop, whilst accepting he may cost us points in doing so.

Fleck: To my eyes he had one of his worst games in a Blades shirt at QPR but delivered a superb cameo last night, charging forward with intent from his first touch. Hs ball to Billy to set up his volley was absolutely top drawer. He is 25% more effective with Coutts beside him and will certainly benefit from Norwood's presence.

In summary, our new signings are stepping up, Norwood will delight the purists and shouldn't disappoint anyone and, if we can bring in a striker of similar quality, there is no reason why we can't improve on last season.

UTMB!

Much better 2nd half. Norwood looked good and we improved with Sharp and Fleck. However, in the 1st half we were poor against what was very much Hull’s reserve team. Opponents find it far too easy to get through our defence and our finishing and final ball isn’t good enough. I’m not writing us off but big improvement is needed - and a quality striker.

Agree with almost all of that, except for the claim that we were comfortably the better team and would have been worthy of a 3 goal victory. That is true of the last 20 minutes, but before that Hull had created the better chances, hit the post, were denied a clear penalty, and somehow didn't score when the ball got stuck inthe chaos about a foot from goal. They also went close with 2 shots in the first half, and a good cross-shot in the second half. All that happened before we began to turn it on. But I share your positivity about several aspects of our performance.

Interesting read Bo, I wasn't there so I have enjoyed your report, as much as I would want us to progress in the cup, the game last night fir me was more about the performance than the result, I have really enjoyed reading and listening to comments about Norwood and it looks like (hopefully ) we can get back to where we were early last season and dominate the midfield, as has been said Norwood ,Couts,Duffy and Fleck are great footballers and a pleasure to watch, so pleased they are ours, looking forward to Saturday .

What does everyone else think of the CBs taking the penalties before people we know can score with their feet like Freeman and Leon? Wilder tossing the cup off?

Anyway I'm proper looking forward to Saturday now after that performance, particularly the second half. Hope we can continue where we left off, keep tightening up at the back and put some chances away.

Agree on Moore. I thought he was poor, and after hearing how good he was in preseason I was expecting better. Seems like a Joe Hart type to me, makes it look dramatic but doesn't save enough. A good backup though but I feel like Henderson probably would have got their goal and a penalty or two.

Need to get behind Leon and hope he can get the monkey off his back, because I don't think he'll be sitting it out.

That's an excellent summary of some key points.
I fear you may be right about Bash as competition is now fierce both at back and midfield.
I am a tremendous admirer of him, he's inspirational and a better player than many give him credit for, however, his ability to influence games from several areas may mean him being on bench more times than he deserves, but first call for multitudes of game situations.

I generally like Moore but the pens eere a bit embarassing. Dived before the ball was kicked making their pens very easy. I thought at least for the ladt one that he would have made a better effort to save it rather than guessing.

Criticising the GK for not saving penalties is about the daftest thing I've ever heard.

Moore had a dodgy game, but (wearing goalkeepers' union hat), I don't think he had a cat in hell's chance of saving their goal. He didn't convince on the penalties, but it is a lottery: if you stand your ground and it goes in the corner, you're not trying; if you dive and it goes down the middle, you look a bit of an idiot. He was close to the one in the bottom right corner, but neither keeper got really close. Their keeper was certainly nowhere near Norwood's pen.;)

I didn't go, but the highlights suggest we could've easily been 3 down at the break.

I watched the replay and I just think he was already down there for their goal but just not quite reaching it. I'm probably expecting too much though. Seemed like he did the hard work.

It's the going so early that annoyed me in the pens, I know it's a lottery but he just didn't exude any confidence at all.

I said to my brother who I went with, we'd have lost anyway even if Norwood hadn't missed because I just didn't see Moore saving a penalty even if they took 10. If we were going to win it would have had to have been them missing.

Disagree about the penalty, like the ref I thought the guy had lost control of the ball just before he went down...
Haven't seen the penalty claim, but it's interesting that some (including Gary LInekar) think (wrongly) that a player has to be in control of the ball when a defender brings him down for a penalty to be awarded!!

not bothered about the caribou cup
checked into the shoutbox and everyone was talking about cars

No problem with CB's taking penalties :)
The modern CB can usually strike a ball fairly well and usually accurately enough to hit the goal from 12 yds with a dead ball.
More important they hit it hard and don't piss about playing mind games with the keeper.
And how many keepers will have studied the CB's "penalty technique"?

I can't disagree with your examples - we did look vulnerable on the break - but for the first time in a while I thought we controlled midfield for long periods. That was in no small part due to Norwood fitting in seamlessly. Last 20 minutes stepped up another gear when Fleck replaced Lundstram. A feature of our play before Coutts got injured was our ability to control midfield for sustained periods. That's been missing since. I'm hoping Norwood and Coutts will be game changers in that respect.

Maybe so, but then the ref has to decide did he fall or was he pushed , I think like the ref he lost the ball then fell.

Has anyone seen any footage to confirm whether the shot from I believe Stevens was over the line.
Convinced that the guys feet were behind the line but not sure how far forward his head was
