Absolutely not!

No wingers allowed! Do you hear?

We want full backs and centre half’s playing down the flanks!

You know it makes sense!

Alan Woodward
Geoff Salmons
Stewart Scullion
Jimmy Johnstone
Colin Morris
Steve Wigley
Frank Carr
Tony Agana
Paul Devlin
Steve Kabba

Most or all of these were out and out wingers/wide men and they were all rubbish and contributed nothing to the team.

You can’t beat having a traditional full back or centre half dashing down the flank!

Hahahahaha

From a Boro perspective we have hardly seen him. He has just been a waste of money, another one of Gary Monks rubbish signings. Monk bought him as a backup winger, scored on his debut coming on as a sub v Bolton and that's all he has done. Never really played him and struggled to make the bench under Pulis, has only made it as we are so short of personnel at the minute. We currently are playing 5-3-1-1 which started against you but reverted to 4-4-2 second half. Friend is the only LB at the club, with downing being employed at LWB and Friend CB against you. When Ayala is fit i would expect Friend either LWB or LB. Pulis doesn't to rate him. If we play 4-4-2 he is behind, Braithwaite if he plays there, then Tavenier then Harry Chapman (who you will know well). So he is either 3rd choice LWB or 4th choice left winger with 2 inexperienced kids ahead of him.

My favourite Marvin......

Boro, can he play LWB?

The only thing wide about Jimmy Johnstone (for us) was his girth

However much a lot on here don't rate Stevens,Wilder will not throw him to the wolves,he actually rates him and will give him the time he needs to develop,so you can put the knives away and support the lad.

I think he’s become the new whipping boy. We haven’t had one really since Wlider took over so it’s overdue.

I think Stevens is a good, but not great, full back. He’s asked to do a lot of overlapping down the flanks and he works tirelessly at that. The problem is his final ball isn’t great. There’s a very good example of that from the QPR game on Saturday. He does really well out on the flank, surges forward and beats his man, then with 2 or 3 United players in the 6 yard box he crosses it somewhere around the penalty spot where no one is waiting.

It’s frustrating at times but, to me, that’s what you get when you ask full backs to be attackers. They aren’t best suited to that role and will let you down with the final ball or get hopelessly stranded out of position and leave holes.

Surely no blade wants a player to fail Doc,
he's not done great in an attacking sense for a long time but if Wilder rates him that's good enough for me ,

Reports saying that Boro's move for Bolasie has been hijacked by Villa (that's a story in itself), could this scupper our move for Johnson?

I remember before we bought Stevens the opinions on here were very positive, clips were shown of him attacking for pompey and people like me who didn't know him went along with the general excitement, suddenly he's no good, and now I am reading about another player ,Johnson who I don't know much about and I am reading the same positive things and how our squad is now ready to challenge for top six, really hope so but I sometimes think the excitement is a little premature just because we have brought another player into the squad, it is natural to an extent especially if it's a "big" signing lets hope we are not knocking Johnson in 18 months.

I like Stevens and I hate to see players singled out when they're doing their best and although he might have deficiencies (what player at our level doesn't?) he is a reasonable left back. However! He doesn't offer enough going forward and that's probably because essentially he's a left back by trade, having to do the job of both left back and left winger. Its a special player who can do both, which is why Kieran Freeman should be first choice when fit this season. I wouldn't have said that at times last season (Freeman was injured anyway) because I really rate Baldock but he simply doesn't provide the attacking option like Freeman does. Baldock might be a better defender but I think Freeman's that good going forward and still is reasonable defensively that he should be picked over Baldock.

Back to Stevens, I think comparing Johnson to Stevens is harsh (attacking wise) on Stevens because Johnson is by trade a winger and its whether he can defend as well as Stevens does that would concern me. Saying that, Stevens has an annoying habit of allowing his right winger to cut inside too easily as Snodgrass particularly showed last season - but he is a class player. Against your average winger Stevens is decent, but its the higher end of the league which concerns me. If Johnson comes then we'll no doubt be better going forward but of course that's only half the position. Playing with wing backs does rely on wing backs who can provide many assists though and at times we do lack creativity so hopefully Johnson if he plays at LWB will give us that.

Johnson would be an upgrade going forward, but a downgrade defensively.
Shame we can`t combine the 2!

He did cross to McGoldrick which lead to the penalty which was a pin point cross.

Boro, can he play LWB?

My Boro mate says he was brought in as a winger but the Boro website states he can play at LWB. Quote below which I posted on page 7 I think.
