Does anyone know when he’ll (1) be back to making at least partial appearance, and (2) playing 90?

Sounds like he has healed quickly and is making excellent progress. A few games with the under 23s now and I reckon we will see him in the match day squad.

With Norwood coming in Coutts will also be doubly driven to get his place back, I am sure he was anyway but I doubt he would have had much of a fight on his hands dislodging Evans. Potentially another very clever piece of business by Wilder.

Coutts and Norwood will undoubtedly both be in the team when the Roller has passed his MOT. They are not competing for the same role, whatever Junior Computer Managers on here might say.

We were told, remember, that Egan couldn’t play RCB and he and Stears couldn’t play together. Both things happened on Saturday to very good effect.

Although I was quite concerned at the amount of shooting opportunities QPR had that were not charged down or blocked. We didn't protect Henderson very well so it's a good job he played a blinder for us.

You might be right but of course that pushes Duffy out of the starting 11, unless we tweak the formation and lose a striker. We undoubtedly play better with Duffy in the team. He is THE player that makes us tick imo.

A midfield trio of Norwood, Fleck and Coutts is a mouthwatering prospect though.

Problem with that is no Duffy, and no Duffy = Little to no creativity.

Coutts is the player who makes us tick. He’s at the heart of everything. When he last kicked a ball we were top of the Championship. Anyone who thinks his injury was not the primary factor in our decline doesn’t know the game I’m afraid.

Norwood may well play the Duffy role. Who knows, but Tufty hasn’t brought Norwood in as a squad player and he wants his Rolls Royce back in the team as soon as possible, as he’s made absolutely clear.

I’m afraid our fans have an enduring habit of seeing things as they would like them to be, not as they are. Hence the nonsense about Lenny being recruited to play Centre-Back when he was scouted and signed as a thrice player of the year central midfielder and Egan, for some unknown reason, being unable to play on the right of a three, only in the centre.

Oh, dem Blades...

Fair enough, I think it can be argued that they both make us tick actually. Coutts controls the tempo in the first 2 thirds of the field, Duffy in the final third. Both provide an anchor point in their respective areas and the play links through them. And both are always available for the ball.
This is why I want to see them both back in the starting 11.

If Norwood can do what Duffy can do, and better then fair enough. His pedigree would suggest so. But I think we can (hopefully) all agree that we haven't seen a midfield trio like Coutts, Fleck and Duffy at the Lane for a very long time. They were ideal in many ways and complemented each other perfectly.

Thought Coutts would play in the u23s today but not involved. Maybe needs another couple of weeks of training and then a few ressy games then ready for mid Sept?

Quite right. Fleck has not been himself so far this season, though. When considering the team going forward, we perhaps ought not to assume it’s Fleck and two others. A fit and firing Paul Coutts is more influential than Fleck. I’ll not say he’s a better player (he is) because that is not this discussion.

Fleck relies on movement and players wanting the ball around him.

So far this season he's thrown his hands around in the air as if to say 'who the fuck is showing for me'.
Evans and Lundstrum beside him, hinder him and kinda bring him down to their level. No coincidence that when Duffy has come on, Fleck has improved. Duffy is one of the only players we have that always wants the ball.

Yes Coutts coming back will be like a new signing and yes he has been missed. BUT!! I hope we all don’t put to much pressure / expectation on him and we think once he returns we will find the form of pre injury.

No mater how good the player one man does not make a team.

Why don't people credit Fleck with being creative? Unless i'm misunderstanding the term, he rarely gives the ball away runs with it, can beat a man and now he's started shooting, defenders have to question whether to block allowing the game to open up for an easier pass.

Agreed. Defending was poor on Saturday really. Too many opportunities conceded to a very average side. Henderson was on top form.

Egan didn’t play very well as rcb and was clearly the weakest link of the 3.
When he did make forward runs he made them into the center of the pitch clogging up the space. Joc overlaps, stretches the opposition and gives an option. Unless Egan learns this then Basham is the best solution to rcb, both defensively and offensively

I think it’s mainly trying to be positive and wishful thinking. I can’t see how anyone could rationally think he wasn’t the primary factor in everything we did, and his absence in our decline. The entire team plan is based on him and he’s clearly our best player. That’s before you look at the facts - our form dipped massively after he was injured.

As someone said on here, the orchestra remains but the conductor is gone. Can’t wait to have him back!

I love Fleck, but how many goals or assists did he get last season?

The reason he isn't playing in the premier league is because of his lack of end product, like most players at this level.

It wouldn't surprise me if the plan is to step up the intensity and bring him back after the international break between the Villa and Bristol City games. There's ample opportunity in that two week gap to put some behind-closed-doors friendlies in.

Stick him on the bench tomorrow vs Hull. He doesn’t have to come on but it’d be nice to see him in and around it all again. If we lose the game - meh.

Irn Bru Legend had 7 Championship assists last year - second only to Duff who had 9. For reference Norwood had 4. Once Coutts and/or Norwood are there behind him we’ll see a lot more of those driving runs ending with killer through balls with the outside of that left wand.

Magic

We need permutations that work with different combinations of CMs, because inevitably Fleck will be suspended at some point and Coutts cannot really be expected to perform at anything like the top of his game until at least December.

I am hoping Norwood's arrival means we can find a combination that works with Lundstram's relative immobility and weakness in the tackle. I don't think Lundstram is a bad player but I do think he needs to play as a deep-lying quarter back type with two willing runners alongside him. From accounts of Norwood so far though it seems he may be a similar type to Lundstram albeit of higher quality.
