The moaning brigade

Silent,
I’m usually quite a positive supporter but having just got back from Boro I’d have to say that first half was probably as bad as anything we’ve seen since we returned to the championship. Yes it’s early doors and I fully expect Wilder to sort it but we have changed from an attacking, fearless team that plays with a good tempo to a lethargic ponderous one whose manager appears to worry about the opposition more than his own side. Not one fan within earshot of me on the concourse or stand could fathom the team selection. I wasn’t unduly concerned after Saturday but tonight showed us glaring shortcomings that even Wilder couldn’t miss.
A long way to go and we are more than capable of still having a good season but it’s time to go back to basics and play with the attitude and tempo of 12 months ago. No toys out of the pram from me, just slightly alarmed and concerned how things have begun

Two defeats including a pathetic one tonight.

Transfer budget wasted because.... wages.

No guarantee that we'll ever see that money again.

Team lacking spirit, belief and any resemblance to what we were early last season.

A strikeforce totalling three 30 somethings.

A manager making countless wrong decisions and seemingly too stubborn and egotistical to acknowledge and rectify them.

Yep. Everything's fine.

Silly, silly moaners.

I wish I was moaning like Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, with intense pleasure at seeing United start the season with two competent performances. Sadly, I'm moaning more like James Bond in Casino Royale when he gets his bollocks pulverized with a carpet beater.

Cheers for that, Silent.

Any comments on the five goals we've shipped in two dismal defeats?

Try to stay upbeat about it, like.

During the close season I wanted us to sign Jamal Blackman again but I don't know if Henderson is better than him but last season I was comfortable about having Blackman in goal when defending set pieces. We were poor for the first goal, second goal was a perfect corner straight to the head of the tallest player on the pitch (a player we cannot afford to buy). Third goal, we were all over the place failing to block an early cross and I think Downing meant to hit the ball across and it was a bit of a freakish goal. Nothing wrong with carrying on playing the same way as we did last season but it showed last night that it is time for a change as all clubs now know how we play.

Woodburn is a good signing and we need someone up front who is quick to reach Woodburn's defence splitting passes. The quickest strikers we have at present are Clarke and McGoldrick (both are also stronger and taller than any of the other strikers we have) so I would start them again for the next few matches at least unless we bring in a new striker. I would start Woodburn and Leonard this Saturday and have Basham in midfield.

It was always going to be the case Silent that even super Chris with his messiah like reputation over the last couple of seasons would be under pressure from our lot after a few defeats and so it is. I think even the harshist of critics could maybe have reined it in after only 2 games but for the fact that it is a continuation, or seems to be, from the last 20 odd games from last season, nothing seems to have changed despite bringing in one or two 'straight on the team sheet' players.

I feel for Tufty, and the rest of us, for the fact that he clearly, for whatever reason, hasn't been able to bring in the real quality we need up front and what happens in the next 2 weeks or so could well define our season. A fit and firing Coutts will make a difference, but that's a big ask, and I still think one quality player up front will give us the same kind of focal point Billy did 2 years ago and potentially make a massive difference.

All's not lost yet obviously but we need to turn things around quickly starting with a Brizzle type positive performance on Saturday.

somehow I don't think the same players will be starting at QPR

Hmmmm not sure that will be correct. He didn’t seem to think there was much wrong with the side in his post match interview

We have to praise Wilder for what he's done so far, however I do worry as to why he still "Bigs Up" the opposition - stating that it's hard in the championship - playing teams with premiership wages - they have top players. It's as if he's still has the "League Onel Sheff Utd" mentality.
It's true though, we are behind a lot of teams financially and have a League 1 squad as a start point rather than a relegated Premiership squad in some cases.

The same people who suggested that Wilder should be given a massive pay rise and a 5 year contract
Are now saying Wilder has been found out and is showing his limitations.

You couldn’t make it up.

It reminds me of the start of the season in league 1 when Wilder first took over and many insisted CW was out of his depth.
Bottom of the league after 4 games but that season didn’t end too badly.

I say this every season, give it 10 games, then we can give a proper appraisal of CW and his squad.

shot for shot i'm sure Henderson is as good as Blackman. however. Blackman was a big unit which had a purely psychological effect on the opposition.. basically the forwards didn't 'fancy it' :)

If people want to moan, let 'em moan. But if someone's being positive/keeping a bit of perspective, don't hit them with all this ''happy clappers", "Bladey Blade" bollocks.

I'd say we're all agreed that Wilder's been fucking brilliant, but the last few months haven't been. Our best player's been out, we've been found out up front, signings haven't worked out. But we get that don't we?

He's taken us out of the dirge and been the best manager we've had in years, we've got every right to say a shit performance is a shit performance but I'd like to think we're a bit more loyal than to turn on him.

But- if you want to moan, you can- it just doesn't mean you're in some way a better, more real fan than them that don't

Post of the week!

For times like this, it would be helpful if in future for each new signing and manager there were 2 threads created, one entitled 'Why X is brilliant', and the other 'Why X is garbage', with all forum members required to put a post in each thread. Then in years to come we can all quote a post to show that we were right, and quote endless posts to show that everyone else was wrong.;)

I totally get why most are very negative from two bad performances but its still only 2 games gone against two of the better teams this season. Its quite possible that Boro and Swansea will be fighting for the top 2 this season. We're still without Coutts and I don't see us defending as bad as we now all season! We'll be relegated if we do. If we play terribly at QPR, who are one of the teams tipped for relegation, then I'll be more concerned, although I am still concerned now obviously.

Those having a pop at Wilder need to give the man some slack. He's done brilliantly for us and deserves our total support.

Sadly it won't work as referring to the search function tends to make some people cry

The best thing you can say about Wilder's team selection is he was putting his faith in the players, unfortunately they paid him back in spades, somehow I don't think the same players will be starting at QPR
Don't bank on it. We'll pick 'the best team for the opposition' (translates to them 2 dumb fuckers in midfield and 2 isolated strikers)

I thought we were at our worst for their third goal. Very poor defending. Two players fail to pick up Downing. He should never have got on the end of that cross unchallenged. I hope this was purely because we were a bit shell shocked after going two down.

Other thoughts: The tempo that we had to our game last season seems to have evaporated. I'm sure that if we were pressing with the urgency that we used to have we would not have lost both of our games. And Clarke really should have scored twice. However, he does seem to have periods where he misses a lot of chances and then suddenly goes on a scoring streak. Hopefully this will happen soon!
