Player names spelt wrong

I always misspelled that manager we used to have who came from Derby as Nigel Cunt for some reason.

I was guilty back in the day of spelling Nilsen as “Nilson”. Inexcusable. However, at the same time I used to get extremely annoyed when media would write “Hutchinson” for Hutchison.

Not sure you're entire right with the naming of the eastern community.

Koreans for example have about 3 or 4 different surnames - Park, Kim, Lee etc.

That's why they use their given names e.g Park Ji-Sung, his surname is Park so in England on his Man Utd shirt they put J.S. Park. Because of the naming traditions and lack of surnames when they play internationally he has his given name, "Ji Sun" on the shirt to differentiate between the other Parks in the squad.

Sun Jihai has worn "Sun" for City and "Sun Jihai" but for United he wore "Jihai"

I've spelt "sung" without a "G".

In my defence, I was thinking about Sun Jihai

Its not just players names spelt incorrectly that gets on my tits, but the horrendous grammar used by certain folk. I suppose that it doesn't really matter as there are obviously different levels of education and intellect across the broad spectrum of people using the site..... however certain basics really wind me up. I'm positive this has been well covered before though.

I know what you mean. I have to repeatedly stab myself with a fork to release some of the rage experienced when a poster starts using a random number of dots to attempt to represent an ellipsis. If I see a conjunctive adverb without a semi-colon preceding it, I have to punch myself in the kidneys. I can’t even describe what happens when a possessive adjective is used instead of a contraction.:mad::mad: ;)

Oriental names are written and spoken surname first. The shirts should therefore be "Park JS" or "Sun JH" to get it correct and afford them the respect they're entitled to. In most cases due to the monosyllabic nature of the words, you could put their entire name on the shirt. Sun Jihai would still be no longer than, say, Henderson.

I sort of agree, but don't you think the players themselves have had a hand in the decision?

It gets mentioned from time to time, though usually the poster gets slapped down for raising it. I don't think anyone expects degree-level English on here, but it winds me up when I'm trying to decipher a load of words thrown together in the hope of producing a sentence. Obviously I'm not talking about the odd mistake, or just a basic style, but I have a general rule for myself that if someone can't be arsed to make an effort and write properly, I can't be arsed to wade through it. There are a couple of posters whose posts I just skip over.

It's unlikely because even though the anglicised version makes sense to you and I it would be impossible to make sense of it translating it back the other way. Oriental people don't get uptight about this kind of stuff so I think its more likely they couldn't care less.

Edit: see also Newbury's post above, beat me to it.

It's not actually "certain basics" that wind you up us it? It's posters not knowing them.

Thought that when I had suey chop pork after the match on Tuesday at Saigon Vietnamese café on London Rd. recommended btw.

Shameless plug: my book For Who the Bell Tolls covers this kind of thing, with the emphasis on using language to communicate effectively, not showing off because you know what a gerund is and the other poor fucker doesn't. (It also contains a number of favourable references to the Blades, and one or two disparaging ones to our suburban rivals.)

Sure there used to be a rule in the Premier League which was later lifted.

Jordi Cruyff used to wear "Jordi" in the CL, but "Cruyff" in the PL.

Admit it: you don't like James Brown because he sang "I Feel Good" and not "I Feel Well".
And "I Only Have Eyes for You" should have been "I Have Eyes for Only You".
I hate the Americanised "I'm good". I asked how you were, not whether you thought you'll be going to Heaven.
