Bubble cars.....
Bert had a friend who had one. First day he got it he drove into his garage right up to the back wall. He couldn't get out, door wouldn't open and there's no reverse.
I bet he wished he'd kept it........... There's a 1960 one for sale for £24,950!

I do remember the Indian restaurant but no idea what it was called. I seem to remember it being quite smart and very popular.

I can't remember either. Had a bar on the left where you'd go for an after time drink. Used to get packed until they put a stop to it. Good food though. Was in once when a well known "character" from Sheffields West Indian community came in to collect some money owed to to him. What followed was like a wild west brawl consisting of him against most of the waiters and kitchen staff. He must have knocked every single one of them on there arse at least twice before he was forced out by five or six of them hitting him with kitchen pans. He left saying he'd be back!

They not surprisingly decide to close - most of the clientele had fled in terror - and gave the few remaining tables a bill for half eaten meals! Despite watching what had happened, everyone politely told them to fuck off. We ended up with a free drink so we'd come back again. Considering who they'd upset, that risk wasn't worth taking.

Kinell, that takes me back a bit . The turnstile on John Street we used to sneak under to get in f.o.c was just a little bit further down the road :)

NAUGHTY BOY!

The Marples!

Punk night on Monday.

Saw the Upstarts, Vice Squad, Discharge, Mau Maus and many others there in the early 80s.

Shit beer, loud music, great times.

Spent some great nights in there aswell and will undoubtedly have shared the establishment with your good self by the look of things . Marples, Dingwalls and not forgetting the Limit were great venues. The Leadmill wasn't bad in the mid to late 80,s too .

I'm fairly certain that Renault 20 TS is my late Dad's. GT Cars supplied the club in the late 70's early 80's, after that it was Hondas from Sheaf Motors.

What was that Indian in the Square?

That was the Indus. A regular late night haunt. Always had chicken curry then a Pakistani workmate who knew the manager took me for lunch with them. I had the curry, they both had an omelette......

I don't know if that is anything to do with the owners of Anila's/Vijay's, after Vijay's they took over the one at the old Dore & Totley train station, again a very nice restaurant, super food & very pleasant staff.

Saying that it could be, I haven't lived in Sheffield for over 15 years now.
In 1998 when we were looking for a house we looked around the owner of Vijays house at ridgeway on the new estate. It was the old showhouse and they had windows in the garage with the curtains drawn. A guy showed us around the 5 bedroom house and we saw 2 other men and then they opened the garage door ,where all the women and girls (about 20 of them) lived. They were all really nice but I was shocked by the massive culture difference back then.We made an offer but were gazumped

My first Indian was on Montgomery Rd ,it was part of one the hotels and the name is really bugging me ,I want to say Ivory house but I don't think that's right. Anyone remember ? I remember having Tandoori chicken and we ordered Bombay duck so we could all laugh at how it smelt like a mucky fanny.

Could be the Alpha Hotel. Others down there were /are the Montgomery, Falcon, Twelve Trees, Ivory House, Lindum, Priory House.
Also the Lindrick on Chippinghouse Road ( I think Prince Naz bought that).

Cracking photo that WalthamstowBlade
Would be interested to know what some of the buildings are in the background, not the flats on the top of the hill, rather the large greyish old looking building on the upper left, some distance behind the brewery.....and the the large old uneven group of buildings in the upper right of the picture [including the one with the staircase running up the out side].

I seem to remember seeing these as a kid but not sure if they are there anymore..? Another photo that makes me nostalgic :(
