Now that's interesting G. - we were debating on 'Pits and Power Stations of Great Britain' whether this was really a picture of Orgreave Pit...?
The only things in common with the newer headgear being the general geometry of the meccano, the winding house and the apparent level change.

This newer version has the same sort of headgear as SouthEssex's photo with a 'roof' over the wheels...

Local councils get given money to spend on say 'capital road schemes' by either central government or some body like Sheffield City region from time to time and they wonder what the heck to spend it on ..... that might have happened with the Little Hole in the Road. Its about to happen in Doncaster .... they are going to pedestrianise Silver Street and put some fancy lighting up there .... the only purpose of which is to spend some money that they have been given by Sheffield City Region and they couldn't think of anything better.

Who said local government is pathetic?

.........(it was me)

Oh and Doncaster is going to build a new museum all of 50 yards from the current one which is in a splendid 1960s building.... the reason? yes, you've guessed it, Doncaster was given £6M by Sheffield City Region (which btw they don't want to be part of) to spend on culture or they'd lose it ... so they had to come up with a scheme to spend it on.

It makes THAT much sense..... o_O

I think the far right edge on the photo is probably Rotherwood House (now demolished) which was used for offices for the coking plant,

There were definitely offices in a block there. Couldn't tell you what it was called. I think this is the building in the background, upper left

The older I get, the more I miss places like that.

My Grandparents once bought me a Kojak Car from Redgates, with the Kojak figure. Anyway, a couple of Christmases ago, Ms Crab found and bought a boxed one for me at a Toy Fair. Must have been summat in my eye when I opened it.......................

If she didn't say 'who loves ya baby' whilst handing it over she deserves a week on the naughty step! :)

With me it was a Buffalo Bill annual with glossy colour plates and a James Bond gold AstonMartin DB7 with ejector seat and machine guns. The batmobile still eludes me.....
