I’ve never seen them, with one or two exceptions, so I’ve no idea really. The more we improve the quality of our first team the harder it gets for these to break into it. I thought Slater looked good what I saw of him (Preston away I think last season).

I’m sure they will play apart in some friendlies.

However maybe this year when we go to the likes of Stocksbridge we won’t be taking all the kids as we will have 22 pros.

This is the thing that’s hard for the kids now they may be excellent players but the level has moved up since CW has been here.

Some of those defenders look big mean fuckers, how old are they? Looks like that team put out by Fletcher in porridge.

I always find those development squad listings & pictures on the official site a bit random. In terms of development football, that is an old list.
Cameron Hawkes has moved on & has already made his First Team debut for Bradford City.
Hugo Warhust has moved on.
Marcus Dewhurst was with England U17 in their EUROs, but wasn't first choice.
Ben Harriott & Jean Belahouan & Tom Weaver - Sammy Ompreon & Reon Potts only very very rarely get in the U23 Squad - so they are way off the First Team at the mo.
Broadbent Doherty Greaves Parkhouse & Mallon will all be looking to get game time at the core of the U23s this season. Greaves had a bad injury & will need to come back from that. (Teaser - I've written a little bit about Oli Greaves in the forthcoming & excellent Dem Blades Annual). Mallon was dogged by niggling injuries last season. He needs to really kick on this coming season.
Portman Ferguson Bennett & Cantrill need to cement places at U23.
Rhys Norrington-Davies has been playing at U21 level with Wales.
The most experienced of the pictured group are
Sam Graham - he was out on loan to non league football at the end of last season.
Jordan Hallam - he was on loan in Norway
Harvey Gilmour - maybe a loan spell later in the season - he's at that stage.
Ty Smith was the leading SUFC U23 Goalscorer 17 goals from 26 starts.
Callum Semple came back from a horrendous injury. His physical development has continued. His legs, FFS, beast.
Other posters have made the point that as we strengthen the first team squad, the Academy lads get pushed further back. Even as we weaken the first team squad Leonard Carruthers Heneghan, the Academy lads get pushed back. Way of the world....
None of those pictured will get a first team squad number. Semple & Graham would be closest. Dewhurst may need to be sub at some stage depending on keeper signings, suspensions, injuries.

Bladey blade piffle. When will you wake up and realise that these youth teams are simply robbing the agriculture industry of manpower? Most of them are actually disabled, did you know that? The day we realise that these glorified kindergartens are an anchor to the progress of humanity, and are probably causing people to catch ebola, is the day that we move on as a club.

I have to admit I did like the look of Slater. Not seen him loads only his odd first team appearances against Ipswich away and Preston away.

Let’s see how they progress.

They are all hoofmesisters.

Even though I haven't seen them and know nowt about them, some of them were born locally and therefore they must all be rubbish.

Kick it hard, kick it long, kick it high and only in S2.

Is that enough?

I'm a big believer in bringing academy players through. To me, there's no point having an academy if you never really utilise it. Obviously there is David Brooks from the past couple of seasons, but going forward I think one area we could look to improve on is giving academy players more of a chance in the first team squad. I'd be interested to hear your view on those most deserving of that out of the players not mentioned on the website.

Don't they have to earn that chance?

Only seen the U23s play a couple of times but the standouts for me were:-

Keenan Ferguson- Played LCB (O'Connell role). Looked very good playing out from the back albeit right footed. Mobile and good touch for a defender but needs to grow. Too small to play CB in the mens game currently.

Sam Graham- Quite the opposite of Ferguson. Big, imposing, very developed physically but less cultured on the ball. Good at getting his head on things in both boxes.

Ty Smith- Quick, predatory. Looks to get off the shoulder of defenders but is very lightweight (or was about 6 months ago when I last saw him play). Would get bullied out of games in the most part at the moment but if he fills out a bit and gains some upper body strength, could be a useful player.

A good Academy, with a good reputation for treating players well, both on entry to, and exit from, makes it easier to attract players - both as very young lads, and as older lads on their second chance - ie BROOKS.
A football club is not just 26 year olds kicking a ball around in front of 23k. It is about kids having a go & having fun. Without an Academy, you're not a football club, you're a collection of signings.
The new football league rules requiring teams to name one club grown player in the match day squad is a very small step towards legislating an Academy Pathway to the first team.
But, the simple point is that Academy players must create their own pathway - by their performance. Be good enough, you'll get picked.
That said. Here's me shooting from the hip. The real barrier to Academy Lads getting a chance in most league sides (including SUFC) is Managers signing dross no better than existing first teamers & really no better than Academy Lads. The mantra is Sign Sign Sign Announce Announce Announce. Wilder has a good record of finding gems. But the Carruthers Heneghan Leonard Holmes lot - currently, they're just a drain on resources & a block to the Academy Lads.
Certainly, Academy Lads have to prove themselves capable of first team places. But, don't block 'em off with fellas who'll just sit in the stand.
Putting aside Reed & Long.
Slater & Eastwood have been involved around the first team already.
Callum Semple is probably next in line.
But, he & other leading contenders seem, practically, a long way off a shirt to me.
Does that help?

Spoke to Tyler Smith's cousin a few weeks back and apparently Tyler will be attending preseason with the first team squad. Also, Tyler was maybe looking to go out on loan last season but Wilder didn't want him to. Think Wilder wanted to keep a closer eye on him and keep him in and around the squad.

Cheers. It's good to have somebody on here knowledgable on these matters.

I'd have liked a tad more detail Phil!? Cheers for update there Phil, although its sad that none of the Development team are near the first team pic. Essentially in recent years the only development lads to make it have had to be international quality or very near! Maguire, Walker, Brooks, DCL (of course he didn't actually play much for us!).Of course Brooks came from Man City as a youngster.

Even in League One with less resources Long and Reed were eventually not considered good enough - which they weren't. It seems of late that in spite of our excellent youth set up we approximately produce one good player every 5 years give or take!

Look. I know my views are a combination of wishy washy & extreme. But, I do see it differently. Coutts, Fleck, O'Connell. They're all Academy Products - just not our Academy. It's a system. Clubs run Academies to ensure a supply of quality players across the board. Some of our Academy players don't make it anywhere, some make it at Manchester City, some make it at York City, some get an education & make it in The City of London.
All of our first teamers come from an Academy somewhere. It's a collective thing. I'm not sure I've explained that well.....

I was joking with the need more info Phil! I thought it was a really detailed view. You're right on where players make it like Whitehouse at York.

I’ve pushed Tyler smith before, so I will again, he might just surprise a few when he gets a number, not sayings will this season, but it could happen.. pick of the bunch in my opinion..

Semple and graham will both make it to the first team, possibly in a year or so if they keep on developing..

If we don’t take the chance we won’t find out, I think smith could end up being one of the two new strikers we need, I rate him..

Semple, Graham, Gilmour and Smith all need to go on loan and play 40 games next season in men’s football.
Whether it be at York City, Stockport, Harrogate, Tranmere Rovers, Walsall.

No point going to league club and play 6 or 7 games. They need to go where ever they will get first team football every week.

Sadly Slater and Norrington-Davies may get a first team number but will not play a first team game and get stuck playing under 23s all season.

All young players need an opportunity in a first team. Whether they get it in the Championship, L1, L2 or non league.

I always look forward to whoever is the latest to come through the Academy, making it in to the first team. As Phil says, it is the embodiment of the club really and it's much more satisfying when 'one of our own' make it in the first team. I don't think we have ever really been particularly let down by any either, unlike some signings who weren't required.
