An inability to distinguish between one of the most common verbs in the English language and an equally familiar preposition is indeed a shame. The shame is played out countless times a day in this increasingly illiterate world, where the elegance of language is savagely assaulted as a matter of routine.

One more thing I'd like to point out. For FIFA World Cups Final Tournaments & UEFA Euro Final Tournaments the vast majority of the tickets are sold "sight unseen". They go on sale before the draw has been made. Often before the qualifying competitions have finished.
That means that the crowds & grounds are unsegregated. OK, some tickets are held back for fans of the two competing teams. And those will be in a block. But many/most England fans just happily sit in the unsegregated areas - often sat next to fans of the team they are playing. All intermingling happily & without mither.
I realise that fact won't play to much of the narrative on this thread. But, it's a point people I speak to are often surprised to learn.

So I was 10, got back from Brid in time and watched the final in 66 on our black and white telly. Sat on the edge of the settee enthralled and threw a pen at the wall when Germany equalised. (Got a clip) Then it was all over, beans on toast for tea and on to the rec with the football to recreate the game. Had the pennant bought for me from Chap on the Monday. Hope the pic works) And the Jules Rimet tie the following week. The point? You don't want pissed up bottle throwing, flag burning, anthem jeering, esoteric arguments, xenophobic cat calling, just football to be enjoyed at its best, us to win and the memories last a lifetime. Come on England.

I wasn't attempting any moral high ground
But I can understand why it might come across like that. I just wanted to be honest.
I see a fundamental difference between how you behave in the frenzy of the 90 minutes & how you behave for the other 4 weeks in a country.
That's how it works for me.
I did want to prick the pricks who wanted to tell me how it is & how it should be, without ever having been to an England game.

Agree with you here and what immediately sprung to mind would be Germany World Cup. We played Trinidad and Tobago in Nuremberg. Before the match we toured the Nazi War Museum along with T&T fans and showed great respect to the awful memories. Once in the ground it becomes and football match and rivalry.

Afterwards we walked through the grounds where Hitler held his rallies showing respect for the surroundings.

To this day the 3 weeks I spent in Germany were bloody brilliant, camping out the middle of nowhere. We played cricket and got German holiday makers involved, teaching them the rules.

I didn't follow England solely for the games but to see a very small piece of the World as well. Show respect, try the food, try the language, embrace the culture.
