Anyone who does is a liar and/or an attention seeker. Simple.

When it comes to tournaments, its laughable why people wouldn’t get behind their country. Can’t wait for the WC personally.
It seems to have become very fashionable these days. Like big beards, lumberjack shirts and STDs.

Apart from the highs and many lows of following the Blades, some of my most emotive football memories over the years have been from watching England,
Who can forget Pearce's penalty, Gazza's tears, Beckham's sending off, Michael Owens wonder goal, Jan "the clown" Tomaszewski, Maradonna''s "hand of god" goal, and Lampard's that was 3 feet over the line and not given.
30 years of hurt is now over 50, but like following United, England have given me good and bad memories that will stay with me forever.

Watched 'One night in Turin' the other night, about England's 1990 World Cup campaign.

I was only 6 at the time and can hardly remember any of it. Didn't know our fans were (or perceived to be) so bad, that we nearly got chucked out and had to play all our games on sardinia, as they thought they could contain them better on an island. One third of the entire Italian army were sent there.

Thought the press today were bad, but back then they were absolute dogs, making shit up about Robson and the squad every day trying to derail the team.

Twas a great watch.

I take little interest in the World Cup / European Cup, at least compared tut olden days. Partly I think it's because there has definitely been an increase in knob-head players, probably since the creation of the PL, but generally I find it's because of the competitions themselves. The group stages seem to me to be completely contrived; a condescending "here, have a couple of big games" to the little sides that have been granted the honour of appearing whilst simultaneously setting up a banana skin to add some kind of tension, which just tends to create negative football.
I know the idea is to be globally inclusive, but there has to be a better way.
Then there's the whole thing about beating a nation's team that doesn't stand much of a chance. It's not like club football where you can get in some good players and some financial backing and improve your team, a country is stuck with what it's got. Internationals should be played with that in mind, players and fans going wild over beating some minnow is a bit embarrassing.
And then there are the World Cup groupies, people who don't bother with football for 4 years and then are mad about the World Cup. In Germany that is practically every non-football fan. It's bizarre and very irritating.

But enough talk of the feminist movement. Back to the world cup.
Hi Blade for Sale, were you Sale Blade on View Points? I was asking on another thread, forums from days gone by, if you were still around. It might be that I’ve got my answer.

No, I think I was Valencia Blade back in the days of VP. I've been MancBlade (or some such derivative) on another board as well, but I think it's only here that I've had a Sale reference.

Go on then....
It's not big & it's not clever. But I need to declare an interest.
I was deported twice from Italia 90
Times were different then...

Consider my interest piqued.....
No charges were brought...
And if they had been, I'd have been cleared.
But I can't say too much because of a) that statute of limitations thing b) that American Fifth Amendment (one not about guns) thing and c) if sales of dem blades Annual go well, I'm going to collaborate with Steve on my Autobiography & I don't want to give too much away free.

Suffice to say, the second deportation was a doozy. Italian Plod asked Alitalia to take me on my original plane ticket. They wouldn't. So Italian Plod asked whether they could buy a ticket on the next plane to Heathrow to deport me on that. The Alitalia desk agreed. Plod tried to pay for it on their credit card. But, they must have had previous. So Alitalia refused to take their card. They had to send a flashing light Cop Mobile to the bank to get the Folding Money to buy my ticket to be deported. By the time they got back, Economy Class had sold out. So, they bought, with real hard cash a First Class Single Ticket - Naples to Heathrow - to deport me. I was frog marched in cuffs to the bottom of the stairs. Unlocked. Walked up. Handed my ticket to the Alitalia stewardess. "Welcome Mr Rose. First Class is it. You sit down in that one there. And, we'll bring you a glass of Champagne before we taxi for take off"

Even though I say so myself. It is a good story. Buy the Book....

If ever a story summed up the competences of the Italian Police, that is it. Belter.

I remember Valencia Blade, well the name at least, it’s surprising how many names I’ve forgotten about from those days. Thanks anyway.

That's me down as an attention seeking liar then :)

In my defence though I used to travel to see them on a reasonably regular basis . That is of course untill the " golden generation " donned the famous shirt . I've never before witnessed a bigger set of overpaid egotistical whining scumbags in my life . There was a time when wearing the England shirt was a source of immense pride but not with that set of full blown wankers . I stopped going during their ' time ' and never even bothered watching them in any tournament on TV . I've not returned to the fold since .

Funnily enough though, whilst I'm very firmly of the belief that Gareth Southgate is out of his depth on the international stage, I actually like what I'm hearing from the current setup . Wearing the shirt appears to actually mean something with the squad today . And whilst we've not got a cat in hells chance of winning the world cup I may actually watch them play as I'm reasonably sure they care .

That’s made me chuckle Phil, very funny indeed.

From the little bits I’ve seen over the last few days I’d say you’re right, there does seem to be a lot more pride from the players than in the past. Maybe it’s just because they’ve been given the chance to actually speak to the media for a change but I do sense the pride in the shirt and the opportunity these players have got to show what they can do.
Now let’s make sure they know the words to the National Anthem and belt it out with the same pride as the egg chasers do when they play for England.

I was thinking similarly earlier today. It was very difficult supporting the likes of Terry, Gerrard etc but these lads seem to be better adjusted. Maybe it’s because they’re better supported by their clubs, who seemed to have learnt the pitfalls of young working class blokes suddenly becoming mega rich? They certainly seem to ‘get’ what being an England player is about.

There does seem to be a trend towards games between some small team that just sits behind the ball and tries to nick a result and a big team that tries to break them down, which doesn’t make for great football.

I’ll still watch it though.

And the best of the lot 01/09/01 Germany 1 England 5 ... literally just been talking with a fellow Blade in Handsworth Inn tonight about that great weekend in Munich. In a weeks time the lucky bugger is off too Russia for 3 weeks to watch England, obviously assuming we get that far!

Your reminder of Italia 90 brought back fond memories for me...

I was working in Italy at the time and during the famous game against Belgium in Bologna I happened to be driving back to Milan past the stadium as the game was being played.
I was listening to a crackly BBC commentary over a short wave radio that my wife was holding to my ear, and as we passed the stadium Platt scored.
I still feel partly responsible for that goal.

Then it came to the final group games and we played Greece at Old Trafford. What a Roller Coaster ride that game was. Then Beckham came up with that wonder free kick.
I was at the end he scored it. Amazing.
As Ball_Sup (Phil) points out. The parallels between the England team s decline and Sheffield United's decline are uncanny. Yet those of us that have lived through all those years, some comfort themselves by taking the fashionable route and knock the National team.
Me, a product of three nations, have more desire and passion to see England do well in everything than some who have family going back generations in England.
In other words. I'm more loyal to England in everything than those folk are.

Phil, when is it zdravstvuyte to Blighty and do svidaniya to Russia? Have you got tickets for all the games or are you just going to blag it?

Furph. No. We're done. I've got an "insurance" ticket to the final in Russia if England get there - wouldn't want to miss that. But, otherwise, we won't be out in Russia.
We're at the Toulon Tournament U21 Final England v Mexico this afts. Then we wend our way back home from tomorrow morning.
Maybe see you & SW12 to S12 to S18 in Scarborough if you're going.

Had a few days in Toulon while at the Euros 2 years ago, nice town but beers a bit pricey. Unusual that the cheapest pint we found was in an Irish bar behind the train station.
The Under 21's are certainly with watching and will hopefully win the final today.
Went to Poland last Summer to watch them in the European Championships and a great time, apart from the obligatory losing to Germany on penalties!

Can we have a section for ‘shite international teams’? This garbage is nothing to do with United. “Other football and sport” might fit if you like this sort of stuff.

Alternatively, there must be an ‘England’ forum out there somewhere?
