I usually defend the Sheffield Star but...

I bet Blades fans would stump up that if they guaranteed to add the correct spelling to their spell checker. After all it is The Heart of the City.

Surprising but shit happens. The reporter probably knows nothing about football. You'd have thought the copy editor would have caught it though....if they still have them

.. please learn to spell Bramall Lane correctly. We are the city's leading club afterall! View attachment 39737

Might be just me, but if I read a story about a fundraiser for a child with a congenital heart defect, the first thing I do usually isn’t to attack the spelling of the article. Not from the sports desk, should have been picked up by someone, but it’s the Sheffield Star not The Times.

This is something I don’t understand tbh. I also find it frustrating and very unprofessional. I don’t know how it can happen if editorial checks are in place. But maybe they aren’t and that’s the problem?

You've shamed me into making a donation :)

That’s nonsense mate, sorry. All newspapers should set high standards.

It's piss poor mate, and the fact it has happened on an important story makes it worse as it has detracted from the message.

Unbelievable what's happened to The Star. It was once one of the best selling local papers in the country. It's a piss poor attempt at a publication these days. I suspect many of the journalists from days gone by would be embarrassed at what has happened to it (and yes, trends and technology are to blame, but so are years of mismanagement).

I do have some sympathy for the reporter. I was very briefly a reporter for a local newspaper in Derbyshire. To the delight of an elderly couple, I interviewed them on their wedding anniversary. Unfortunately my basic maths let me down and I said that they had been married for 40 years not 50, ruining the article for the wife who had planned to have it framed :(

Is it really though? Years ago people were predicting the end of printed news media would have happened already - years ago, in fact. Paying an office full of salaries from a localised website must be nigh on impossible, so I think it's inevitable these things will happen.

Of course they should. But you have to accept the reality that most newspapers are not blessed with funds, and that’s particularly the case with local newspapers. They aren’t exactly likely to get faultless journalists either, which is why errors creep in.

I thought we went over this and Bramall is actually a misspelling of Bramhall.

It should actually be Bramhall Lane because the land around it was owned by the Bramhall family.

So the Star is being historically correct. So well done Sheffield Star and booooo to all the pedants slagging it off

If the article had been printed in 1787 you might almost be correct. So nonny nonny to thee, sir.

Sheffield Star by far the worst paper around
