What Would You Do With The Corner.

Weve sat there a couple of times this season when we've had to move seats due to family & friends wanting to come with us.

It's not as bad as you think. Plus going for a piss is easy as there's no queues...

My only gripe would be the lack of free Pukka Pies. Think there's a gimmick there and them and the club are missing a trick!

It's going to be exec boxes. If only this had been discussed before somewhere......

It's always going to look like a mismatch due to the difference in rake between the kop and family stand. Once the pillars on the kop are removed it will be OK from a viewing point of view and will increase in popularity as the Westfield corner has done. Some extra boxes at the back will tidy it up and either way, it will still look better than the fucking great hole that existed before it was built.

For the corner in the stand I'd raise the seats and change the barriers at the sides for transparent ones so people can see.

If its the corner on the pitch turn it into a memorial ground for long lost decent set pieces.

A dedicated area for disabled fans to view the action above the height of an ant. Would take many alterations but disabled fans really do get shafted when it comes to football, imo.

Was just thinking this as well.

I’ve never sat in there, so dont know if the accessibility would be up to it but how about making it a designated older supporters section as well? Somewhere thats got plenty of space and no crushing to get out, etc so some of the older fans can get in and out without feeling rushed or intimidated. Maybe have a few volunteers in there to help out.

I know a few 70+ Blades who dont go anymore purely because they dont like the crush and rushing about. If they knew they could go and avoid that, plus easy access to the bog and a cup of tea I’m sure theyd go.

Of course, I've never been on that corner and I've not been on the entire John St stand for 17 years because Sheffield United think it's okay to discriminate against those who don't have children.

Sitting on it is fine. Looking at it isn't.

Fella, the stairs aside it's perfect for you. No queues to get out, easy access, never full so no crush and never a queue for the pisser - in fact it's a couple of Stannah stair lifts away from being perfect!!

It would be good if they could make it a section for disabled fans. The front of the Westfield Corner would also be suitable. They should have a better option than watching games from pitch level. Even at grounds where they have disabled areas higher in the stand, their view can still be blocked if people in front simply stand up. It's something that needs more consideration in football. No excuses.

My ST renewal for the SS is £250. The facilities are fine as are entrance and egress (i.e. no steps). It's unlikely the corner could be made better than that for us oldies. Besides, I'd rather sit with people younger than me rather than a bunch of moaning old fuckers. You trying to get rid of us or summat? ;)

Spot on. I should imagine it boils down to cost at every club. Getting disabled supporters to a higher level means some kind of lift and, therefore, needs some planning and thought.
Most clubs just want to save the bother and just put them in at ground level with easy access but a, subsequently, worse view.
As you say, "no excuses" in this day and age.

Yours and Ricky's suggestions are, although with good intentions, a non-starter. The issue is not with getting disabled people in, it's getting them out in case of emergency. I think there is some kind of limit on the evacuation time and the necessity of lifts, stairs plus the restricted mobility of the spectators would make it a disaster waiting to happen.

Put a big exit ramp in. Who doesn't like whizzing downhill at speed?

If only there were other stands to sit in

What Kevin McCabe hasn't taken on board is that any expansion of capacity of the Kop MUST involve it's demolition and rebuilding - it's simply too uncomfortable as a seated terrace.

The current proposed backward extension of the Kop leaves the back rows at the limit of how far away from the action you can sell a ticket for. And yet, the front row of the Kop is too CLOSE to the goal line .... this is why the crowd has to stand up when the ball is in the Kop penalty area.

I think the only viable answer is to extend the John St. Stand and the South Stand towards Shoreham Street by about 16 metres (thus expanding their capacity a little) and rebuilding the Kop entirely.

The current proposed design takes the height of the new Kop to its practical limit .... otherwise, the houses on t'other side of Shoreham Street would be too overshadowed..... so if you build the new Kop Stand closer to them, it would have to be a bit lower to compensate - therefore the new capacity would be less - BUT if you extend the John Street and South Stands, you can compensate for this loss of future capacity.

The extra straight areas of seating are drawn Green on this plan. (note that the original terracing is shown on the O.S.map and it forms the current Kop)

the pitch can then be nudged closer to Shoreham Street (obviously not the whole 16m) and this would allow the Lower Bramall Lane terrace (shown Blue) to be rebuilt higher and become continuous with the Bramall Lane Upper or with a step to divide the supporters.... you would almost to double it's capacity.

So, the big problem is a psychological one for Kevin. If you rebuild the Kop, because of modern standards of safety & comfort, the density of the crowd would be diminished .... you and he have to realise that rebuilding of the Kop COMPLETELY is inevitable and overdue.

The sketch plan outlined here shows how such a rebuilding of the Kop could be achieved while maximising the crowd capacity at BDTBL - but you cannot do it without thinking strategically about the development of the rest of the ground.

(obviously the John St. Stand is problematic (hence the botch job filling the corner with seats)... the red line shows the unobstructed Line of Sight from a new corner curve to the corner flag at Bramall Lane/John St. - for me, rebuilding this stand ought to be contemplated - possible before putting a new tier on top of the South Stand ... which as others have pointed out, would make the ground lob-sided.)

But the Westfield Corner/South Stand managed the difference in rake OK, without:
  • Having an inexplicable gap which serves no purpose
  • Doesn't have dozens of seats with zero view of the game because they are 'hidden behind the wall at the east end of the JSS.
  • Installing cheap seats that turn pink in the sun.
What would I do with it? I said when it was built. I'd have told the architects to come back and re-design it when they weren't pissed. Who were the architects? Blunkett & Wonder RIBA?

Well I’m 34 so not ready for the Stannah yet but the rest sounds great!!!
