I know I’m a day early by the calendar year, but on my Saturday footie calendar it is the Northampton anniversary today.
I got thinking after some Brewsmith, Moonshine and True North ale and the mind turned back to this Saturday last year and the Northampton match.
From the early start, the warm weather, the breakfast at The Double Six cafe in Euston, over doing the prematch ale around the town, speeding in a cab with some previously unknown Blades to get to the ground in time, half time ale with a number of old United fans all wondering how we beat their ticket system to get in their main stand ( I never tell on social media!), Fleck’s goal, full time whistle, getting on the pitch, seeing Billy aloft with his simple scarf, trying to find champagne, a train journey South when all you want to do is head to Bramall Lane for the homecoming party, ordering the bestest ale in The Euston Tap and continually toasting Chris Wilder ( a bit too loudly probably), getting the adrenaline comedown on the HS1 to where I live (home will always be Sheffield) about ten o’clock, going to me local and buying all the barmaids a drink whilst not doing so for the West Ham tattooed barman, getting home and watching it all again on the highlights programme over and over again, cuddling up to our lass and saying I love you when really thinking of Chris Wilder and of course, getting promoted.
So to Sheffield United, Chris Wilder, Alan Knill and everyone else who was there in person or in spirit Happy Anniversary darling!
Question? Best day of last year - Northampton away or pigs away?? Tough call for me as vowed never to go to the piggery after 1979 so watched that on TV, so for me whilst I regret that in a way, it means Northampton wins.
