I think you're missing the main thing that cost us that season

Off the top of my head......

Penalty v. Liverpool
Disallowed Goal v West Ham
2 missed penalties v Blackburn
No penalty v Man Utd
Arsing about v Villa
Penalty v Wigan scored by the prick that missed one against Blackburn.

It's understandable that people might have fond memories of a few big days out whilst he was in charge but as far as I'm concerned he did his very best to derail the one tangible success that he actually had in 6 years.
Thankfully, Kevin McCabe who for his faults is a more genuine Unitedite than that arsehole will ever be saw through his bullshit.
Warnocks behaviour since passing through our club like an unpleasant kidney stone has proven what a low-grade twat he is, and he should be thoroughly disowned.

Sadly, the Cult Of Colin dies hard.

We had the second lowest budget in the league, at 22.4 million during the Prem season as has been pointed out several times on here before...Wigan's was 5.1 million higher at 27.5.

Fulhams was actually 35.2 million.

Was that the available budget or what was spent?
Two different things entirely.

We may have failed to get some of the targets.

Could this be a threatener to Tan? Give me a big pay rise or I'll just sit on my arse and let Blackie do it.

Well, in light of this ....

In today’s Guardian, he is quoted as follows:

“...when we got promoted, within 24 hours I got a letter from the club saying they were going to take my option up but with no increase in wages, just incentives. That knocked me for six.”

...... it’s certainly starting to look like a concerted campaign, isn’t it ?

Regardless of how much money he had his recruitment was awful Luton Shelton and Ahmed Fatty! And people wondered why we got relegated, let’s also not forget he had absolutley no intention of going to win any game away from home.

His tactics were abysmal in that season away, I have made my feelings known about this odious man and the latest headlines do not surprise me one bit.

He has never been and will never be a Blades legend in my eyes. He hasn’t got an ounce of class.

Think Stead was £1.05m

£750k potentially rising to £1.25m. The rises might have been dependent on us staying up though.

Isn’t it more of a nod of appreciation and contrast to 2006 given his newly-signed deal two months ago? https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/big-neil-warnock-new-contract-14345073

I believe that's what we spent for the season on all staff.

I know Warnock was very keen on Nugent for a long time but at 6 million we couldn't/wouldn't stretch that far...and ended up scraping around in January for strikers.

The point being there's little argument to say that we weren't down the very bottom when it came to 'Prem level backing'..bit similar to Wilder in his first season in the Champ...we'll be down the bottom end of the league spend.

A slightly different take to what’s described in the OP then.

He was clearly irked that the club didn’t give him a new deal on promotion, and frankly I think that’s understandable – and noticeable that Cardiff already took steps in February this year to extend his deal for 2 more years. It’s what most clubs would do as a statement of security for both the manager and any players you’re looking to recruit – even though in Warnock’s case this time he’s probably odds-on to be sacked by Christmas...

I'm sure the club was fucking irked when during the season he was going to take the Portsmouth job. We were up for promotion and the "Blades Fan" was going to walk out on us to take the Portsmouth Job. It's hardly surprising they didn't trust the self serving fucker. They couldn't sack him as he got us promotion so they just did what they could so they didn't have to pay him anymore. What they should have done to counteract the lack of pay was offer a massive stay-up bonus which would have fed into his greedy nature, but he would still not have had the technical skills and diplomacy (referees) to get enough points on top of the Tevez / Mascherano cheat points West Ham accrued.

For someone who had "lost interest" and let's face it, he knew he wasn't getting a new contract because he never shut up about it, why would he buy "for the future". A statement he's never satisfactorily explained.

We can argue about the odd £200k but his constant claim of "no money" is easily proven to be horseshit.

Contrast? Just says the tightctwat still holds a grudge. Which to be fair a few do with him after all these years for getting us relegated and not accepting one iota of blame.

McCabe stuck by him for over six years. Loyalty meant nothing though when the Portsmouth cash signs were flashing in front of his eyes.

Fuck him and his inaccurate digs at our club and fuck his eyebrows, wherever they may be......

..because he was cheap and popular with the majority of fans.
They fell out when he started asking for more cash in the Championship promotion season.

Only popular with fans who were more interested in results than their manager's eyebrows though to be fair.

Looking back at that premiership season, we played with a lot of desire and he got 110% out of the players (cliche cliche cliche etc.), but he made some rash decisions and didn’t seem to know what to do away from home at times. That said, his points total wasn’t awful, but we could have stayed up.

I think the problem was that we had invested in ‘project warnock’ big time. His players (‘something to prove’, ‘do a job’) in a team completely in his image, which is quite a restrictive one.

We’re arguably doing something similar with Wilder, but lucky for us he favours attacking, passing football. When he does finally leave (hopefully a long time from now), there should be a multitude of similar minded coaches to choose from, and we can have some consistency.
All Tevez talk aside, we got 1 point away from home from the last 30 points available. Also why we went down.

I must say I have mixed feelings about the bloke, some great times/games under Warnock and a lot of dull/frustrating one's :D

...he did well on a low budget and got us promoted when that budget was raised.

Before we get consumed by revisionism, these are the cold hard facts:

99/00 16th (Took over from Heath & avoided serious danger of relegation)
00/01 10th (6 points off play offs)
01/02 13th (15 points off play offs)
02/03 3rd (One of my favourite seasons as a blade & we were a match for any team in the country)
03/04 8th (2 points off play offs)
04/05 8th (6 points off play offs)
05/06 2nd

..because he was cheap

And I suspect that, in a nutshell, forms a large basis for his attitude on his contract. He probably got the job in the first place because of his links to the club, but I always felt that this was also a factor in terms of pay, resource for the squad etc likely being lower than an equivalent manager we’d employ. The sort of attitude of “Here’s your contract, and here’s your budget. Don’t like it? You know where the door is.” – with the board confident he’d put up with it because he was a fan that wouldn’t leave the club. You saw signs of this when McCabe was asked about whether Wilder would get a new deal last year – I believe his words were “Chris already has a good contract.” Thankfully we extended it ultimately.

06/07?

I don't see where anyone has queried anything stated in that post. Can't be revisionism unless they have. Which would be stupid. Two excellent seasons in there though.

At the time my memory of the Nugent thing was that Warnock did not think he was worth the fees.
Of course there is normally a correlation between outlay and the quality of the players, but Warnock appeared not to want to spend high. Was this his decision or the board, we will never know.

..I'm sure he didn't want to pay that but I'm equally sure he pursued Nugent for months and pestered the board to stump up the 6 million for him!

IMO he'd have paid it if the board had sanctioned that fee. :D
