Warnock was supported by the board in the Premiership season. At no point did his position seem to be under threat. That season was frustrating, I remember us at man city who where utter shit that day, and us not going for the win. In the Premiership he is out of his depth.

Why should Warnock not be upset that he didn't get a pay rise from United after promotion to The Premiership?
How much did United gain financially from promotion and the TV money and the increased attendances?
Would it have been unreasonable for them to reward the manager who gained promotion with a pay rise?

The Aston Villa away game is often mentioned, but the match that sticks out in my mind was Bolton away. They were playing like an away side, hoofing it up to a largely unsupported Kevin Davies, and we just sat back, persisting with an ultra-defensive five across midfield.

Villa was awful. And notable for Colin playing a half-fit Killa out of position at full back, where he was done time and again. Bolton was dreadful, too, and is even worse than Villa in my memory on account of a truly foul half time pie.

Can I throw Blackburn away into the mix, as well ? Here, Negative Colin excelled himself by playing Del Geary as a left sided midfielder in front of Chris Armstrong—because Blackburn (the very definition of mid table mediocrity that year) were such a devastating threat down their right.

There was no-one on the post for the added time (?) free kick that won them all three points, either, despite several hundred Blades pointing it out loudly from behind the goal before the kick was taken.

I imagine there’s an element of truth, plus a lot of subjective/selective stuff too.

I’d guess that the financial incentives for survival were very generous. But given the contract extension was triggered instead of replacing the whole thing, then I can believe the base pay was a lot lower than Warnock expected.

It would be good to hear McCabe’s side.

I agree he should have said this isn't right give me something better or we'll call it a day. I suspect the board were 50/50 on Warnock but having got us up they thought he deserved his chance in the Prem. Personally I never buy it that he was out if his depth and made so many mistakes. Yes he made some mistakes - who doesn't. We got 38 points and went down on goal difference with no rub of the green over the season, such as the big clubs fielding weaker teams against our rivals,the Carlos affair, Jags playing volleyball for some stupid reason giving the pen, the injury to Hulse.

In my view its a real shame that Warnock isn't more popular with our fan base. He isn't though solely because of his own actions and what he says, and his actions have somewhat ruined what should have being a great relationship with the fans. He ruined it for me too with his various actions and he needs to look at himself more than blaming the fans for being fickle as he said on numerous occasions.

Danny it’s clear to see you obviously like Warnock probably because he is the darling of the media, but can you also see why the majority of fans disliked him? Even when he got us up there wasn’t a great amount of affection for him. The things he usd to say made me cringe, let’s be fair he dined out on the triple assault season for years but that season was ultimately a failure.

Once again in the play off game I would question his tactics in a big game.

I really could not say if the board were unwilling to back him, the link above says we did bid £6 million. Warnock got the best out of some average players, that he did very well.
By average I mean players that had to try really hard to be Premiership class players.

Think he can be slagged for a lot of things but after spending 8 years here, a lack of loyalty isn’t one of them. Especially for a job he didn’t leave for, in a season when he was the first manager since Bassett (and only one since) to win promotion to the top flight.

Let’s be fair Danny he wasn’t exactly top of the football pecking order when we appointed him was he? Loyalty works both ways, we could quite easily have sacked him following the poor season after the triple assault season but stood by him.

That was my interpretation of it – all about being handed a draft deal with a salary on it to take back up to Sheffield to show the board what his worth was away from the club. Unfortunately the episode would have also highlighted to them that he wasn’t going to walk away from the job, so they weren’t motivated to upping his wage to anywhere near what Pompey would offer.

What am I supposed to be looking at here? In neither of those articles are there any quotes from Neil Warnock.
You originally said that Warnock claimed he was "pipped to the job by Harry Redknapp". Where has he claimed that? Where is the quote?

A journalist speculates that the emergence of Warnock's name is a ploy to get a better contract with United.
But Mandaric confirms in a quote that Warnock is on his short list. Which suggests that it's not a ploy initiated by Warnock.

Maybe this is why you think that Warnock keeps changing his story?
Because you're reading a journalist's speculation and believing it be something that Warnock has said?

I really could not say if the board were unwilling to back him, the link above says we did bid £6 million. Warnock got the best out of some average players, that he did very well.

The board did back him, but like with Wilder it's relative...our budget was second lowest in the league that season, just as Wilder's will be one of the lower Championship budgets.

Re: Nugent:

Just looked at the bid and it seems it was to be in instalments..I'm guessing dependent on our survival in the Prem...?!?!

Bang on the money, it was embarrassing Bolton, Blackburn Man City to name but a few. The only game he did have a go in and put another striker on at halftime was Newcastle away and we won! Did you see how his team set up Monday? They were awful and I for one thank the lord we have Chris Wilder at th helm and not that idiot.
