John Lundstram

Lundstram is a real enigma. Infuriates the hell out of me! You can see how much quality he has but he has a real brittle confidence; he needs to believe in himself so much more.

At start of season, Wilder used him to close games out - indicating he was more of a defensive midfielder - but it’s becoming clear that he is better on the front foot. Box to box, he clearly has the quality and I think he can make it here but he has got to believe in himself and take a risk sometimes. Too much turning back and slowing things down and always seems to have a mad five minutes where he gives the ball away ten times!

Agreed Lundstram will have a mad 5 minutes where he just plays a silly ball and then tries to make up with something even more strange.

I believe CW will turn him into a real player. The we have played so much better the last 2 games at Brentford and Cardiff and it’s no coincidence Lundstram has started both.

Our dip in form has coincided with Evans in the team ahead of Lundstram.

He's definitely looking slicker on the ball than he was.

He's been excellent since he's come in, despite a lot of unwarranted criticism. He was excellent at Brentford before being subbed off too.

Good performance last night.

Heavily involved. Showed good touch and vision.

If his career with us is to push on, which appears perfectly possible, he MUST cut out the frustrating trait of trying to find a pass which, quite simply, is not on. Other than that, another genuine contender for MOM last night (there were many!).

The things he does well make me think he could be a quality player. Defended him all along. However, about half a dozen times tonight he did something stupid trying to be far too clever or just punting it for no reason. All he needs to is iron out the few mistakes from his game and he'd be playing in the PL.

Fixed it, etc. :D

Apart from the header in the first half, he was good tonight. Gets in dangerous positions.

I’d like to see both him and Evans work on their shooting from the edge of the box though as I think we’d have had a few goals from them both this season !

I honestly think he could be a great box to box midfielder, a proper midfielder.

He’s won me round pretty sharpish, he just needs playing right now.
This was posted in December by some complete numpty. :)

Thats how i saw his game tonite.

How the hell do we get Lundstram, Fleck, Evans, Duffy, Brooks and Coutts when fit into the same team? Our midfield is stupidly strong and cost us stupidly little money, best in the league maybe? If only we could take chances....

We saw the best and worst of him tonight in my opinion, you can see why Wilder picks him against a physical bunch like Cardiff. He’s great at putting the odd tackle in and winning 50:50s but he does need to improve his decision making and forward passes to be a staple in our first team

I thought his forward passing was his strong point last night. Those quick, direct passes into the box caused chaos in the first half and he seems to have suddenly forged a real understanding of Clarke's movement.

Lundstram has been an excellent signing, has got better as the season has gone on. Potential to be a top player.

His forward runs into the box cause problems and he is the one midfielder who gets shots off. There is a top top player in there CW will get it out of him next season I am sure.

Lunny had a great game tonight MOM rightly went to fleck he had one of his best games for us

Forwards done their job?

Leon Clarke tonight was unplayable. Movement, pressing, hold up and played a few cute passes too. Best performance from him this year.

EDIT: I think that goal gave him confidence 10 fold.

Agreed, although the Clarke haters who sit behind me did their best to deny it. Best moment was when he got the ball before he scored and one of them said "Don't give it him, he'll fuck it up". My celebration consisted of shouting "he's fucked it up" over and over. Quite enjoyed that. Eventually they gave up slagging him off and went for Donaldson instead.

I think that depth will be a big difference for next season, we'll be much more able to freshen things up without weakening the side (although I still don't see how we could ever manage without Fleck - everything crossed he doesn't get 3 more bookings). I think one of the reasons we dropped off was our high energy style wasn't sustainable with the squad we had. Lundstram's settled in as the season's gone on, I think Evans will improve the longer he is here and we've got a couple of options to replace Duffy.

On the flip side, I think our best 3 are still the League One trio of Coutts, Fleck and Duffy and our midfield was more guilty than the strikers (who seem to be getting all the stick) for missing chances last night. Evans' 1 on 1 was probably the best chance of the lot and I thought Lundstram's in the 1st minute was at least as easy as Donaldson's late chance.

That's simply not true ,if anything he is the one who wont shoot ,which I was pleased about when he played Clarke in for the goal. To say Fleck and Evans don't shoot is just not true.

I don’t disagree regards Fleck and Evans but Lundstram had atleast 3 attempts at goal from what I can remember, all were a tad disappointing mind but his is trying.

Just had a look. No, he wasn't. Fucking unbelievable.

Which fucking moron decides the nominees? They clearly don't have a clue about football. Embarrassing.

Basham was absolutely outstanding and clearly MOTM.
He should’ve been nominated but he was by no means clearly MOTM in a game where we had a number of contenders.

Surprised Clarke didn't get it. He scored the goal after all

Or Xavi?

The result will obviously take the shine off tonight, however I feel like huge amounts of praise is deserved for Lunny for that performance! Quality in possession, crisp passing & quality through balls that the best defense in the league just couldn't handle.

Had the forwards done their job properly, we'd be walking away with a handsome win tonight & Lundstram would have ended up with about 5 assists.

Awesome
I think he had a decent game but it's really getting to me that the forwards are being blamed for the missed chances last night when it was midfielders including Lundstram (at least twice) who really had the best chances to put us out of sight. So really if he and Evans had done their job properly we would be in the play-off spots with a huge confidence boost.

Defended the lad from day 1 ,
There’s a good player there , and delighted he’s coming good now , 1or2 stray passes and shots , but at least he’s trying to push our team on
Looks like some on here might have to look for a new scapegoat now !

Always been a fan of Lunny, thankless task stepping into Coutts' boots but he has been excellent for me and was again last night....un-droppable at the moment and it will be interesting when everyone is fit again for next season, plus one or two new additions maybe, to see how we line up.

Can't see us doing this, but with Stearman potentially injured, could we go for the Christmas tree, 4-3-2-1;

Baldock - O'Connell - Basham - Stevens
Lundstram - Fleck - Evens
Duffy - Brooks
Clarke

In not saying I'd want us to risk this, as 5-3-2 has worked brilliantly for us again this season. But from an attacking point of view this team would have some serious potential.

“Could” be majestic. I think a midfield trio of Evans Coutts and Lundstram is more likely. Hope not but every chance Fleck could go.

I very much doubt that Tufty wants to sell Fleck ....... and if the Board force the issue and sell him against Tufty's wishes ....... they should be stoned in the car park for their foolishness !! o_O

Always thought there's a good player in there, delighted things are working out for him and us.
Well done Lunders , awesome, really offers something different. .
