Hmmm, il get back to you on that one.......

we were playing our peers then

we re playing our peers now

depends if you believe
I love your optimism. Is there a secret to it that you can pass on to us pessimists, worn down by decades of under-achievement by the Blades? In recent years I have found that even when I get optimistic about a match, pre-kick-off I look at the opposition players and decide they are more skillful, more famous, better paid, bigger, or faster than ours, and if we get through the first 5 minutes without being out-classed, I breathe a huge sigh of relief. Then we score, and I start thinking 85 minutes to hold on, it's too long. I think I need my own sports psychologist.

yes , stop living in the past

we arent those teams from the past

we are the team that tore into this division and went top
then lost coutts , freeman brooks got sick etc and lost a bit of direction for a bit

but weve shown we can beat any team in here , except fulham , but we might get a chance to address that

football is about on the day always has been , and its what we do on the day
not the no show v wolves in a play off final long ago

thats gone

If only you'd thought of this plan earlier. We could be top of the league right now.

It's alright believing, my daughter believes in Santa, Fairies, Goblins, Elves, and is very happy believing that Peppa Pig is real and our puppy, is going to be in Paw Patrols, new elite team next year, but the fucker in all this, is that bastard, REALITY! why, oh why, does REALITY have to exist!???????
This year isn't last, were not fighting to win win the league, unlike our porcine neighbours, just up the road in Barnsley.
Unfortunately we started so much better than any of us dreamt, and, unfortunately, the loss of Coutts and Brooks, affected us badly.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see us finish in the top six, but the way we've played of late, doesnt instill confidence.
Hope I'm very very wrong, but I'm afraid It's going to be a lot harder than thats year.

well we managed to bridge all the supposed gaps in 1990 to come up and go up again

other teams have also done it, been done about 6 times since we did it

so its not fairy tale stuff , its been a reality
its not an unbridgeable void

in our promotion in 1990 I remember losing 5-0 at west ham and 4-0 at leeds so it wasnt plain sailing
you could have argued against it being possible then , but we did it

Trouble is, football is so much about emotion. I can tell myself all these things, and that luck evens itself out, and that we are due a bit of success, but I know the pessimism is now so deeply ingrained that I can't get it out of my head. And in most areas of life, I am an optimist, and tend to think quite rationally (in my opinion!). But it doesn't work where United are concerned.

It may be a tad on the optimistic side, but it's better than hearing how we're too crap to make it, haven't spent enough, are punching above our weight, our lower league players are only hacking it because of the Wilder Christ - who's off to the Prem at the first whiff of an offer anyway; not that I think the forum has been overly negative this season, but there's nowt wrong with a bit of optimism now and then.

Yep, I'm with blade too long . I called it at the start of the season with a handful of others on the prediction thread (to much tut-tutting) so I'm not a johnny come lately or bandwagon jumper. Our mid season sticky patch was a bit longer than I would have liked, probably made the difference between auto's and playoffs, but I'm sticking to my original prediction of 5th.

I believe that we were playing our peers then and now. I don’t believe we’ll finish in the same way as last season. Recent form doesn’t suggest we have it in us. Last season we were running away with it and had good old “momentum” on our side.

If we finish 5th or 6th that will mean there are 4 or 5 better teams and 17 or 18 inferior teams to us. That seems a fair assessment to me from what I've seen this season.

the gods owe us.. and they know it ;)

We were simply better than the other teams in the run in last year. Momentum is a buzzword at the moment. Like "the number ten role" (not new, Puskas played that in the fifties. Deep lying it was called then) We were better than a lot of teams earlier this year. Confidence helped this year rather then any 'momentum' . Some poor results has affected that confidence. Hopefully it's coming back but a lack of consistency from our"top' players has been our problem recently, Coutts injury apart.

well the return of a fit Brooks could be the catalyst weve been missing ,
not heaping pressure on the lad but his enthusiasm is infectious and lifts those around him

hes a long way to travel yet but if we can just make the most of the next 9 games , and the added 3 that would follow
he wont be the only one testing himself against better players and travelling to yet more new destinations

well if we win the next 4 then the momentum will have no option but to push us on a bit more

we are due a run ,

Would obviously love to see it happen, I just don’t see where it’s coming from based on recent performances and results. The confidence required to put together such a run is something we don’t have at the moment.

but thats the thing , who saw palaces late run to promotion
who saw bournemouth steaming in at the end
how did QPR hit form in the last 12
bolton steamed through and overtook fleetwood last year

when we drew 1-1 at oldham some still thought wed blow promotion last year

who thought wed win every game

Brooks isn't 100% fit though.

Yet again I admire your optimism and yes I understand it could happen, however form suggests it won’t.

Just because people don’t say we’ll win every game doesn’t make them pessimists, if it happens great, we’re in the play offs. If not then we’ll hopefully have another go next season. It’s all supposition and I’m very much in the “one game at a time” camp.

.

ah but theres the rub , form suggeted man city would tear wigan a new arsehole in the cup
form suggested Wednesday would finish 21 points above us this season
form suggested shrewsbury would be fighting off relegation to league 2 this season
form suggested villa would rip QPR apart

I have several hundred more

Yes it could happen and believe me I get your point, I just don’t agree with it. The form book has been ripped up in the past, but it won’t be for us this season. We’ll win a handful and lose a handful of the remaining games and may or may not get in the play offs. Nothing we’ve done recently suggests to me that we’ll storm the last few games.

I can’t decide whether we’ll beat Forest or not, we should beat them but you never know with us.

I could post on here and say that we’ll win every game, but it’s highly likely that we won’t so I’ll stick to my approach and be pleased if you are right.
