"League One is becoming an increasingly competitive league, with some huge clubs playing their football in English football's third tier over recent years; including Leicester City, Wolves, Sheffield United, Southampton and Norwich City. It is also the home to former Premier League winners Blackburn Rovers, which shows just how hard it can be to get promoted out from.

Along with gigantic clubs comes big-money transfers and although League One cannot compete financially with some astronomical fees that fly around in the Championship, there are still some significant deals that go ahead. Here are the 5 most expensive transfers of all time in the third tier:

1. John Brayford, Sheffield United, £2million

The Blades spent big money in League One terms to lure John Brayford from the division above, as the defender left Cardiff City to join Sheffield United in January 2015. He had spent time on loan with them previously, clearly impressing during that short-term spell from the Bluebirds. However, when Chris Wilder moved to Sheffield United prior to last season, Brayford left the club to join Championship side Burton Albion on a season-long loan; so was not part of the Blades side who won the League One title last season. He then left the Steel City to join Burton on a permanent deal in the summer." ETC

What a brilliant decision that was beardy.

Which is 15 million less than the most expensive Championship transfer. Also factor in that transfer was 3 years ago, it would seem transfer fees are going down in League 1 rather than up.

I always maintain Brayford's signing was totally driven by the board (Princey) as a vanity project. Doubtless Clough wasn't going to say no to getting Brayford in, but spending so much of the budget on one player in a full-back position goes totally against Clough's entire ethos as a manager.
My take is that it was Phippsy seeing how much we loved Brayford v.1, convinced the Prince to put the cash in for the deal. I think it was the Prince as it's not really McCabe's modus operandum to spend so much on one position; we didn't see it in Lg 1 before and neither since.

I think this shows the madness of that deal. It's understandable (though I don't advocate it) in the Championship to gamble on promotion to the Prem but in League 1 no one can hear you scream...hang on that's not right...in League 1 you're too far from the promised land.

£2 million is fuck all whether you are spending it in League 1 or in the Championship. Problem with some of us, we still think spending that sort of money is a lot in the world of football.

Maybe we paid a bit too much for John and the money could have been spent elsewhere on the squad at the time BUT it is not that much more than Peterborough paid for Assombalonga.

Also I think it was nearer 1.5 at the time and the rest was based on promotion. I guess another 500k may have been paid to Cardiff once we went up?

Maybe, but look how much they sold him for.

A whopping 300k more than Assombalonga.
2 words: resale value. Brayford had none, plus Assombalonga is a striker who are always worth more. The signing of JB was great and no-one complained at the time but it was always a frivolous, unnecesary one.

1. Brayford
2. Asombalonga

Who are the others?

Sorry just seen the link.

Had we got promoted shortly after then people would have seen it as money well spent. Also had he not got injured then there is a chance we would have at least got our money back on him or would still have been our first choice right back in the championship.

So, two were bought and sold for a massive profit, one of whom went from league one to consolidated premier league status.

Two others are still valuable first team players albeit in the same league (but not for Long as they are probably going up again). One is a popular player for club and country.

The other one suffered a serious injury and probably was paid to not play for that club again after going from cult hero to scapegoat in the eyes of some fans. And was the most expensive.

You just know which one we signed don’t you?

How much was the budget? Do you also know which players we would have signed if we didn't spend it on Brayford?

they would have all been from Derby.. midget midfielders.. possibly Scottish.. we'd have wasted it anyway..

Yeah, because Clough signing Scottish midfielders from Derby was never a good thing was it?

I don't recall a single person being against this at the time, in fact most were berating the board for 'not showing ambition' or 'not putting their hands in their pockets'.

Funny how things turn out

There were a handful of people, but it perhaps sums things up that at the time this very sensible view from him behind you was posted it received zero likes: https://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/brayford.34907/page-34#post-704539

I'm probably going to get slaughtered for this but here goes.....

As highly as I rate the beard, have we decided that we now need more right backs than midfield players? Flynn has been ooutstanding in recent weeks, Alcock is just back from injury, we sign freeman and Davis is on his way back. I know the beard is (or was when we saw him last season) better than all of them but will he get us promotion or if we have £1m+ to spend, would we be better spending what we have to address the problem at the other end of the pitch?

Just a thought

Just want the information you seem to have to make that assumption.
The fact that Done apart, we spent fuck all on anyone else? I didn't think that £2m being a large part of a Lg.1 side's transfer budget would be that much an out there statement.

can't understand the hate for Brayford. a welcome chink of light in very dark times. he did get quite badly injured i seem to remember..

I don’t recall there being much hate for Brayford himself other than from a small minority – that’s separate from considering the deal ill-advised, or viewing it as a big failure. Even when he was sold there were plenty disappointed that we were getting rid – it’s a good job we did, as it gave Wilder further flexibility in assembling the squad, while opening the door to Freeman for his superb season.
