If you don't score you can't be Man Of The Match

If players genuinely do well at the Lane, they'll get praise from the fans, if they're playing poorly the fans will let them know about it. It's not a witch hunt, it's calling it as we see it.

By ‘let them know about it’ do I deduce you mean booing and abuse? Great stuff from the best fans in the land, eh?

The problem is that many of our fans are single-called numpties who neither see it nor call it correctly, so happily I decline to be part of the self-indulgent ‘we’ who let them know about it.

That assumes our fans know what they're talking about, which in my experience, is often not the case.

That’s a bit silly. I believe Leon was substituted against Hull? Substitutions these days are a bit more sophisticated than simply tekinimoffcozeescrap.
He was substituted because we were getting overrun in midfield and he kept losing his man down their right, in my opinion obviously.

Or....
The club select 10 season ticket holders each home game to sit on the soft seats and act as an expert panel to decide on man of the match.

Trying to get signal in the ground is almost impossible at the time people are supposed to be voting. Since you have to do it through Twitter I’d argue most of the people who vote are not at the game to begin with.

The quoted example of Gannon was a classic case in point. Initially we all thought he was a negative crap midfielder who couldn't tackle and wouldn't go forward. For those too young, think a shortarse Dean Hammond with a perm.

He 'evolved'* into our playmaker playing wonderful short passes to allow Ward, Whitehouse and Deane to make perfectly timed runs through on goal. He was a lynchpin in much the same way that Coutts was earlier this season. He still didn't tackle much, but his reading of the game meant he was often in the right place to block opposition passes anyway.

*In this instance, 'evolved' means he didn't change at all but we all began to open our eyes and see what he brought to the team.

Gannon is a bit before my time. Coutts is another example though.

OP is ridiculous based with zero facts.

Duffy wins it most weeks and has scored 1
Goal.

Respectfully, does any really care who is man of the match these days?

Everyone comes away thinking this or that player played well. They’ve paid their money and hold their view.

But when it comes to mass voting, I need MOM results to inform my footballing opinions in the same way I need X Factor to inform my musical tastes.

Worst one was in the Wigan V Man City game the other day.

Jermaine Jenas, ex premier league footballer, decides Will Grigg was the best player on the pitch.

Yes he will get the headlines for the goal, and it was a great finish. But Man Of The Match, really?

Pretty sure I heard some stat that he had the fewest touches of any of the outfield players.

You had some incredible performances from Dan Burn, (why does that name sound familiar?) Chey Dunkley, Nathan Byrne & Dave Perkins. I'd even have given it to the keeper Walton over Grigg. Made several very good saves & never really looked flustered.

Conor Sammon looked like he cared.

Suppose it depdends in ones definition of “man of the match”.

Against Preston in the cup, it was a poor game with both teams keeping it tight seemingly more concerned about not conceding instead of trying to score. Hardly any chances created from either team.
Reminded me so much of the games when we had Clough and Adkins as manager.

It was difficult to pick a man of the match as no one stood out.
But as Sharp stood up to take the late penalty at the Kop end.
He was under pressure because he probably knew if he scored we go through, if he misses it’s a replay that we didn’t want.

He scored the late winner so deserves to be man of the match, eventhough he did very little all match.

I get that, in a poor game between 2 even teams a goal scorer will always stand out.

But this was David vs Goliath, league 1 defenders up against some of the best players on the planet.

To keep that Man City attack out for 90 minutes is an almost impossible task, only twice had they failed to score in either league or cup this season.

It was an incredible defensive performance, to stay switched on from the 1st minute to the last & never give them time or space in the final 3rd was fantastic to watch.

So to then give the MOM to the striker seemed like a slap in the face to me. I realise the defenders probably couldn't care less, but it still annoyed me haha

No one ever told me that I should provide facts when contributing to this forum :)
There were too many holes in your argument but I thought you made a good start.

Slightly angry and factless posts are always winners, but yours was never going to hold for too long.

An easier 8 page thread starter is to slag a current player in preference of a fringe player or perhaps suggesting Ched/ Billy/ Leon are finished.

You’ve achieved a thread score of 6/10 because of the unique subject, however points were deducted for selecting lundstram due do his status of potential scapegoat

I voted for O'Connell. Bit disappointed that he didn't end up winning, I sent it first class as soon as I got home

CUNT

The least surprising news yesterday was that John Lundstram won the Man Of The Match award. Not because he was the best player (he did OK) but because he scored a goal. It seems to be every home game the award goes to the goalscorer. How many at the game actually text in to name a Man Of The Match?

I think you are missing the point that a vast majority of our fan base aren't actually that intellectual, nor do they understand everything that goes into a game of football. For example, if Billy Sharp or David Brooks are nominated, Billy Sharp or David brooks win the award.

Seen fleck and Duffy win plenty and not score.

He does hat though doesn’t he that Garth Crookes. His team of the week on BBC boils my piss.. just a GK with a clean sheet and outfield players who scored.

Yep I was shouting at the screen calling JJ all the names under the Sun. At this point the Mrs said "why do you even give a fuck?"

I didn't but I can't stand Jenas, or Keown. They are both pathetic pundits
