Not in the first game (22nd May - 1-1). That was Glenn Roeder, but TC was captain in the replay (27th May - 1-0 to Spurs). Details

One of TC's assailants in post #6902 is Chris Hughton - currently Brighton's manager.

Roeder was suspended for the replay. These days serving suspension was 2 weeks after an offence that reached the maximum number of disciplinary points

Yes, but which one is Pele?;) And it should read 'Bert and Pele and HodgysBrokenThumb in the same picture'. I felt ok about going to S6 for that.

And Trig as well, I was living in S6 at the time, in student digs. Our landlord was caretaker at Hillsborough, smashing bloke and he could get us tickets for every game, Cup semi-final excepted.

Add LSF to that as well. Bunked off work early to see the great man (along with a sizeable part of the male workforce!).
Largely disappointing....

It's becoming clear that there were no Wednesdayites there...

Reactions: LSF

No mention of Wednesday or this match in Pele's autobiography. There is a reference to the Blades but I can't remember the ins and outs.

I learned some years later that before the game Santos refused to pay Pele "appearance money" so that will be why he treated the match as if he was training

Santos played a friendly (maybe the week before) at Villa Park against Aston Villa and demanded extra money or they wouldn't play. This demand was made almost at the last minute. I think the money was paid but the game was very close to being cancelled

I'm not sure you can call anybody who willingly goes to Hillsborough when United aren't playing as a 'Unitedite'. :D
Was in the North Stand for that match. My headmaster kindly allowed me the afternoon off. Was disappointed at how Pele played

I'm sure I've told this before. I was at King Teds at the time and, in morning assembly a few days before the Santos game, Russ Sharrock - the headmaster - asked if 'anybody wanted the afternoon off to go to the game?' A huge cheer and 300-odd arms shot up. Sarcastically, he asked 'is there anybody who doesn't want to go to the game?'. One arm went up. Mine. I knew they wouldn't keep the entire school open for just one awkward, Bolshie bastard.

I didn't go just as I won't be going tonight to see the pigs play in those God-awful shirts playing a team in white. Fuck 'em.

You haven't really changed a lot since your school days have you

Russell Sharrock....... Now there's a blast from the past.
He was still headmaster when I started at King Teds Upper in 1982. Wore his Mr Chips gown until the day he retired as far as i can recall.
