Lee Baxter: video evidence

Tbf he made two mistakes that cost goals but was never seen again. I'd say we've had worse keepers based on their repeated displays over prolonged periods.

Good to see a reminder of how good a player Monty was despite the haters.

Also couldn't fault Browny. Anyone who takes that cunt Blake out deserves a pat on the back.

Mervyn Day @Palace, v Wimbledon
his SUFC career was twice as long as Baxter's I believe
1 whole game - did save a penalty I think ?

Was it Alan Fettis?

The first is an appalling error. The 2nd is just a standard error.
It was indeed Fettis. The only performance to match Baxter's was Nicky Johns, who just about survived his league debut v Sunderland in 1978, and then had a disastrous match in the 4-1 home defeat to Leeds in the League Cup at home. He then went AWOL before the next game, and was never seen again in these parts..

Who the chuff is Whitlow?! Did he play many games for us?

I remember Baxter and Fettis being a huge shock to the system after having a string of quality goalkeepers up to that point. Kelly, Tracey and Kenny spoilt us.

Always love seeing a Monty goal, need to dig out my “I was there when Monty scored” T-shirt.

I too, like many on this thread, have no recollection of if Mike Whitlow was good or not.

Can someone enlighten me?

Come to think of it, the 2003/2004 season overall is blanked from my memory bank. I recall us losing in the cup to Sunderland on TV and Warnock playing 4 full backs and I also recall Stuart McCall legs finally ceasing that season. That's it.

Aye
TC got boo'ed (by some) & netted twice - yestdi STILL doesn't take the pain away although the 0-4 @ their place was some (eventual) solace. - (Monty netted [again !?!?] in 1st minute)

I’ve waited about 15 years to see these....in fairness they aren’t as bad as I expected (albeit the first is terrible). Neither error would make it on to a football nightmares compilation hosted by Nick Hancock.

I was expecting something along the lines of Massimo Taibi.

I was just about to ask the same thing, I don’t remember Mike Whitlow at all.

I assumed he must have been on loan for a game or two but according to Wikipedia he played 17 times!

Having now seen it I thought it was much worse from my view behind the goal, I seem to think Baxter almost threw one in.

I was with FBFD for that Burnley match and I remember saying to him that the only person who'd be happy with Lee Baxter's first half showing would be Nicky Johns.

My dad said after the Sunderland game that "the new goalie looks a bit suspect." I still have nightmares about Johns juggling the ball as he fell into the corner of the net against Leeds a few days later.

i didn't think it existed but video evidence of the worst goalkeeper ever to wear a blades shirt has surfaced on YouTube, here it is for the purpose of those who couldn't make it that's day:

I’ll see your Lee Baxter and raise you by the imposing figure of our ex keeper Nicky Johns. We signed him in the 78/79 season from Tampa Bay Rowdies and he also played just one game for us. The game was against Leeds in the League Cup at the Lane and we lost 1-4, all 4 goals being down to him. To put it mildly he was shocking.

I seem to recall that we promtly sent him packing but then astonishingly, he carved out a very good career for himself at Charlton Athletic and and on at least one occasion, he came back to the Lane and had a blunder against us. (as they do).

It was two games; his debut was against Sunderland the weekend before the Leeds game. On MotD John Motson said, "Some of these clearances by Nicky Johns are not doing his teammates any favours."

My Dad reckoned he washed his gloves before the game and forgot to rinse the soap out. Nightmare that Leeds game.

I was at that game and it was deffo a game of two keepers, we were far the better side.

However I still defend him on that second goal as it hit that awful bare patch in front of the goal right in front of him. The first was an absolute shocker though.

He only played one game so can’t see if he would ever have recovered from it. Simmo and Long made similar blunders, more often.

My god I've only ever heard the rumours, and well, who the fk kidnapped Monty

Pinchy will be along in a minute to declare this as fake news. You can't go posting things on here that show that Montgomery did actually possess some talent!

As far as the goalkeepers go, if Baxter had been playing for Burnley and their keeper playing for us we'd have slaughtered them about 5-1.

He was rubbish :) Remember him having a mare at Reading that season, think he gave away a clumsy penalty and free kick from which they scored their goals.

Do my eyes deceive me or did the first goal get deflected? It looked like Baxter simply didn’t see the change in trajectory.

That last game end of the season dead rubber match three nill defeat against Wimbledon. A very ‘interesting’ result..

‘Very Very interesting’

.....ahem!

Anyhow I won’t go on...

Astonishingly, the butterfingered one managed a further 69 appearances in football matches anywhere after his 45 minute turn at Burnley, before going onto coach goalkeeping at 4 football clubs above the Sheffield cub and scout league in the pyramid.

Yeah you’re right Greenwich, I remember now, we won 3-2, I didn’t think he looked too bad in that game myself (albeit compared to Steve Conroy), it’s funny that it’s the defeat that stands out. I should have checked myself in our record book instead of trusting the net. He actually played three competitive games for us if you include him playing against Donny in the County Cup.
