Still being shocked and stunned by the Madine £6 million fee got me to wondering what Dem Blades would now be worth compared to what we paid for em...A bit of fun speculation for a Friday afternoon!

(p.s- for the fee's we've paid I've just gone for the 'rumoured fee' at the time, so don't get yer knickers in a twist if some are out by a bito_O :D , but please feel free to amend/'debate'/ridicule as is your want)

Jordan Hugill has just gone for £12mil. Madine £6mil. Brentford turned down £7mil for a centre half who's played about 10 games at this level from Bournemouth.
I'm sick to death of us selling ourselves short. Our view of our players worth is still in 2012. They're now proven championship players most of them, and this is what we should be looking at:

Moore: £300k - £1.5mil
Eastwood: Free- £???
Baldock:£300k- £4mil
Stevens: Free- £750k
O'Connell: £300k- £8mil
Bash: Free- £900k
Wright: Free- £500k
Freeman: Free- £1mil
Stearman: £600k- £600k
Heneghan: £150K- £???
Lafferty: free- £250k
Fleck: Free- £9mil
Lundstram: £400k- £800k
Coutts: Free- £3mil
Duffy: Free- £800k (age factor)
Brooks: Free- £15mil
Carruthers: £300k- £400k
Clarke: £150k- £2mil (age factor but Championship top scorer)
Sharp: £600k- £800k
Don: £50k :D - £500k (age factor)
Ched: £150k- £???

Evans: £750k - £1.5mil (already doubled his value for me after 2 games :)
Leonard: £750k - £750k

That's more like it, if you ask me.
The £???'s are ones where I haven't seen enough to judge a value.

We have to look at players and think 'how much would it cost to replace him?' and replacing a Championship quality player of the standard of Fleck or JO'C would cost us nearly £10million. I'm convinced of that. The fact they're left footed and address a balance issue in any team adds a good bit onto their value too.

I reckon most are pretty wholesome... Ched on the other hand...

Certainly worth good money now. To really cash in, you'd have to sell them all on January 31st, when the panic sets in, so fortunately we can relax a bit for 363 days. ;)

Pretty good assessment that except for Coutts and Freeman with the question marks hanging over their recovery (especially the latter as he's yet to prove himself at this level).

It's difficult to value players because it's based on supply and demand. It's who wants a player and what they're prepared to pay for them. And what they can afford. And who they're competing with.

For example, both West Ham and Palace wanted Hugill, he's taking a step up, to a league awash with money. West Ham will take the view that if signing him keeps them up, he'll be worth it. And if he does more than that, if he looks decent at that level, he'll be worth more.

If two PL sides want to sign one of our players, he'll be worth a lot. If two Champions League sides want him, he'll be worth even more.
If the only sides that want one of our players are in L1, they probably won't be able to pay that much for him so he'll be worth little.

Then you have to factor in age and re-sale value, so a good twenty five year old is worth more than a good thirty year old.
There's also the matter of what alternatives there are in the market, how desperate the selling club is to sell and how much the player wants to leave.

And finally, you can't always trust the reported figures. Sky were saying Hugill went for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £10m.

Just a bit o' fun... :)

I’m sorry, the fact Warnock paid £6m for Madine and Hugill went for £10m is madness. They are both average footballers, Hugill puts himself about and Maxine is a thug. Neither have any craft or skill, neither are particularly quick and neither have natural finishing ability. The figure for Maxine physically makes me want to vomit.

Warnock really is a pillock, who hasn’t really got much of a clue, the same man who paid millions for Akinbuyi, Horsefield Shelton....has just stitched up Cardiff with another one of his classic fuck ups.

As for our teams values, in the striking department we are quite old with Don, Clarke and Sharp all losing value on that. If it were simply on ability then currently Clarke and Don would be worth at least the same as what Madine went for, both are miles ahead of him.

The gems in our team are
Fleck (10m plus), with Powell and Cairney being touted in the 12m bracket I see him as equal to them and on a long contract.
JOC, is proving a really top player, and would be able to step up again IMHO. That puts him in double figures with his long contract.
Lee Evans has looked like a shorter version of Coutts at times, still not quite in that league but age on his side to get there. A fully fit Coutts would be 10m plus in today’s market so you would have to place Evans there too with both on long contracts.
Baldock- perhaps yet to add that bit of quality in attacking areas with his final ball, and getting the odd goal. But again, age on his side, long contract and has real Pace. 8m and rising for me.
Finally Brooks. His illness is a concern as it can last a long time with the fatigue. But he has loads of ability, swagger and that bit of quality to turn games. Still a kid, and has a lot of growing left to do as well as gaining experience. He should be a top international level player in future if he gets lucky and avoids injury. Long contract....so anyone looking to buy with an eye on the future would need to be stumping up over 15m, with his value possibly going skywards over 25m if there becomes a bit of a battle to get him.

How times change eh.

The Brentford dude must be Maldini if they're turning 10m down for him, yet let JO'C join us for 300k.
Don't know who the Brentford player is.
They obviously thought JOC wasn't good enough for the championship and maybe at that time he wasn't. But good coaching and a good season under his belt has improved him considerably. Benham is another owner who thought he'd reinvented the wheel so I do like to have a little chuckle at things like this.

Football's an unpredictable business at the best of times and statistical crunching won't get round that, you still need to do the basics.

I'm guessing their statistical analysis tells them they're in with a chance of promotion so, from their perspective, it makes sense to keep him, providing he's happy to stay and doesn't do a Mahrez.

Same with Fulham. Their parachute payments run out this season so they have to go for promotion. If they fail they'll still get good money for Sessegnon and Cairney (if they don't get injured) so it's a sensible gamble.

Preston have presumably accepted they won't go up this season so have taken the money for Hugill, as he's never likely to be worth more than £10m playing in the championship. Unless the pigs want him, of course.

Not sure the Don has lost much value on his £50k..not with them five Championship goals under his belt anyhow... ;)

Pretty good assessment that except for Coutts and Freeman with the question marks hanging over their recovery (especially the latter as he's yet to prove himself at this level).
To be honest mate I think Freeman is worth that based on last year. 10 goals from right back, an absolute joke.
Do agree on Coutts, but based on what he's done if his recovery is just fine he could even be worth more.

You have to think about how we'd replace them more than anything.
This time last year you could probably halve the big values I listed but it's rising every year.

Could we replace Fleck or JOC with ready made players of equal quality for any less than £8mil? I'm doubtful in todays market.
League 1 players take a while to come up to scratch - these 2 had a year under Wilder and still started pretty poorly this season. They've grown with the gametime.
And the fact they're left footed like I say can drive their value up even more.

Doesn't matter so much in a 4 at the back but when you've got a LCB you really want him to be left footed. We happen to have the best one in the league and if I'm perfectly honest I think JOC will play champions league football. He's that good at in that role, and a lot of good teams now play 5 at the back.

People might consider it a reach - I don't. If you look at Harry's trajectory I consider JOC very much in his bracket. Harry will play CL football before he's 30 - why not JOC too?

I know this is meant to be a giggle, and therefore very subjective, but I've added my valuations of specific players who I feel we should expect more for.

Baldock: £300k - £5/6m
O'Connell: £300k - £10/12m
Freeman (assuming he's back to where he was): Free - £6/7m
Fleck: Free - £15/20m
Coutts: Free - (given he's 29, may take time to return to the standards we expect etc, and that even with these elements working against him) £7/10m

I know that eyebrows might be raised at some of these valuations, but football has long since entered into the land of fairy-tale valuations. For what it's worth, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a higher fee for Fleck, simply because with decent players around him I would expect him to perform to a level that we all know he's capable of.
The omissions of Brooks are explained by the fact that we're in the land of the unknown at the moment. We're talking about a boy who has shown potential, immense potential. My belief is that Brooks can deliver so much more than he's shown until now, but what he does need is a regular run of games, (a) to build an understanding with players around him, and (b) to test himself regularly and prove that the promise can be translated into regular high levels of performance. Then we'll have a player whose value will rocket, and the figures that are currently bandied about - £15mil seems to be a familiar figure? - will go through the roof, but until this happens it's all about glimpses of what he's capable of delivering. Sorry if that upsets some of the Brooks fan club (and I happen to think the kid is a bit special) but the boy needs a chance on a regular basis before we'll get an accurate assessment of his market value.

The Freeman one is way too much mate. He's still one in the 'league one brilliant, championship unproven' bracket. But based on what he did in League One alone I think can command seven figures.

It’s an interesting comparison as O’Connell is only a year younger than Harry who went to Leicester for a reported £12 million ( rising to £17 million) bit of a bargain eh?

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like Leicester came in with a 10 or so million for JOC in the summer...

Really liked what I saw of Lee Evans, he was our best player against Villa.

Can’t wait to find out if that’s his normal performance level, thinks he’s going to be one of our key players for years.

I know what you're saying, but even with the silly fees in football these days, some of those seem a bit optimistic.

I can maybe agree with you on Baldock and O'Connell but I think youre valuations of Fleck, Coutts and Freeman seem excessive - but as you say though: it is all subjective.
