I was a student in Hull watching in my local Scream boozer (yellow card for the cheaper pints).
Watched it on a tiny screen above bar because Manure vs Wet Sham game was on the big screen (for the fair weather Man U student fans from everywhere bar Manchester). That game finished first and ours was put on the main feed just in time to see Webber miss the one on one and hit the post.
I kicked my stool over on final whistle to the bemusement of most of the pub, stormed home and ripped my United shrine off our living room wall.
Gutted!
Still some good memories from that season though which is weird considering it ended in relegation...I remember buying the season review dvd as well

And Richard Scudamore ?
Yes. And Trevor "west 'aaaaam" Brooking as well. To such an extent that I will personally laugh my bollocks off for a full minute if there is an attempt at a minutes' silence/applause at the lane when he shuffles off. Fuck the lot of them.

I did develop a slight fondness for (I think) Blackburn though, as apparently on opening day at upton park the following season, their fans were heard singing "We should be at Bramall Lane."

What I remember most is my brother turning to me after checking his phone and saying "Man U 0-1 West Ham, Tevez" and knowing we were gonna get bummed.

Remember it well. Bloody West sham and Manure have been two of my top hated teams since.

Still, how we didnt draw with bloody Wigan at home!

2007 wasn't that bad. If you survived 1981 and came back for more, then 1994 and 2007 were mere blips. Being a Blade prepares you for life's little setbacks.
Interesting point , but I’m not sure.

In 1981 we knew we were wank. We’d already prepared for it.

In 2007 we conceded a 99th minute equaliser (end of seas season form), and got massacred in the replay by putting the girls team out (employing Bryan Robson).

It’s the hope that kills you - in 1981 we had none. :)

I'd like to say........."MOIST", I'm not sure why, just really like that word, it slips off the tongue with ease.

Comedy Gold, nay Comédie Noire, from the Bladey Blades of the day.

1. Don’t criticise the Everton player for giving away a truly ridiculously stupid penalty. He’s a club legend. Not his fault.

2. Hope he plays many more games for us. Keep wishing on that star! The car was already started and the sat-nav already programmed.

Come on Yags. Tell us all about it. It’s been over ten years now. Surely you’ve had time to give the matter a moment’s thought?

...haven’t you?

still annoying going down with 38 points on gd again
hull stayed up twice with 5 points less and losing their last game

we never get the rub

I remember being the only Blade in a bar full of West Ham fans in Tallin watching it unfold...unravel...on the telly.

I stand by what I said back then, except when I said we were relegated due to not amassing enough points of course :-)

So.

How did you feel at the final whistle?
Were you at BDTBL or watching via TV?
If the 13 year cycle is to carry on, we need to achieve promotion in the next two seasons.

I love nostalgia....
In the morning of the match I read papers headlines about Warnock moaning about the lack of contract offer. I knew we would lose cos of Warnock's stroppy ways but I fully expected Man U to beat West Ham. To this day I still have not read the match programme for that day.

I 'knew' it was coming. When Hulse broke his leg I said 'that's us down'. Everyone was saying all that shit about West Ham wouldn't beat Man U, we wouldn't lose to Wigan and I thought 'bollocks'. It seemed worse than 94 because 94 was such a shock it didn't really sink in and I was still optimistic enough to think we'd get back quite easily.
I'm not going to do any trite analogies because ultimately, it's just football and there are much worse things that can happen than seeing your team relegated but it fucking hurt.

Just checked the table, I thought we got more points to be honest.

7th - Bolton
8th - Reading
9th - Pompey
10th - Blackburn
11th - Villa
12th - Boro
16th - Fulham
17th - Wigan
21st - Charlton

it might have taken us a while but at least we are in a better position than all but 1 of those teams.

Still hurts though, as you say think we'd have stayed up with those points in most seasons :(

Did this article really affect how we played? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2313117/Warnock-and-son-have-much-to-lose.html

Pinchy will be along in a minute to claim that the line “If we're not in the Premiership, you'd expect clubs to be interested in him” started a twitching in Phil Jagielka’s hands that only stopped when he leapt to deliberately punch the ball into orbit.

Dont read Daily Telegraph. I was browsing the papers at Tesco and I think the headline was in News of the World

Felt like I had been shafted, kicked in the bollox, my best mate had shagged my wife coupled with a strong sense of bereavement!

It would have been okay if we were relegated because we were shite (and away from home, we were) but the concoction of West Ham cheating and not receiving a football punishment, the Premier League then turning a blind eye allowing them to continue to cheat, even in that final game!, top clubs playing reserve teams against our relegation rivals in penultimate games, incomprehensible refereeing decisions vs Liverpool, West Ham, Man Utd which cost us valuable points (we did get one vs Watford), Hulse breaking his leg, Webber conspiring to miss great chances and Jags to seemingly activate his £4m release clause in our penalty area whilst David bleeding Unsworth scored that penalty for Wigan after missing his final penalty for us!

It pissed it down too all afternoon and I had to take the dog for a walk!

That was Man. City before the cash rolled in. Won 2-0 at Upton Park on the first day of the next season.

I remember just being in a daze from the 80th minute knowing that MU or ourselves must surely equalise but knowing that neither would. I remember Webber racing through but I hardly blinked - I just knew he’d miss. I was fine at the whistle but about five minutes after full time the Kop piped up with a GCB that destroyed me. It was the most emotional, defiant but sombre GCB I’ve ever heard. Horrible day.

Ah ok...no idea why I had it in my head that it was Blackburn. Kudos to the City fans there that day...I've always had a soft spot for them (historic underdogs in a city where their neighbours never shut up about how great they are) and I still don't begrudge "old" City fans the glory they are experiencing these days.

I too remember that last, defiant GCB. I think I sang it through tears.

Whatever happened to Tinoblade, Keenzy and Sharpy?

Amazing to look at the table from that day. Apart from the 2 Manc clubs, 2 Liverpool clubs and top 3 London clubs only Newcastle, Wet Sham and Watford are there now. They have all been out as well - so only those 7 have stayed. Emphasises really strongly that staying in Prem for 10 years for most is an unlikely dream and you need to structure your finances to recognise that.

Knew we'd lose and go down. We'd have been better off needing to win by 2 goals rather than a draw with Warnock in charge. I'd have played Davis against Heskey for starters but it was all safety first stuff.

Then again Webber's shot goes over the line rather than along it.....

Biggest regret is not lumping on us going down before Villa at 25-1 when I talked myself out of it. Had to make do with 7's instead but it's the biggest stake I've ever put on.

Relegation is always tough. 1981 was the one I found most depressing. If memory serves me right (and Mrs HBT reckons it often doesn't), we were only in the relegation spot for the last 10 minutes of that last game, we won something like 2 of the last 14 games, crowds were dipping down below 10,000 for some games, and it really felt as if the club could disappear without trace. 1994 and 2007 were relegations from the top division, and disappointing as that is, until the 1970s relegation to the second tier meant some years in that division, and then a return to the top. Going down to League 4 was a descent into the unknown.

Yup - I read that and had exactly the same feeling. When the final whistle went my only thought was "fuck off Warnock - this is your fault". If he really, really wanted a contract extension then he would have shaped the team better and really got them up for it. I remember sat in the middle of the kop wondering where the Blades spirit was. You know - like what we got now. If ever there was a single match that needed it, that was it so as not to rely on other results because we all knew how that would end up ..... it was in his hands. Simple. When I saw the team line-up it just felt wrong. Make them worry about us - we were good enough. The message sent to the team must have been so demoralising as they needed the belief that we were the better team. And we were. Ah well.

That's then .... as for the now .... :)

I did, 50 quid at those odds. Couldn't wait to get rid of the cash afterwards, it felt tainted

Sorry about this but that just made me laugh (I don't know why).
