Very disappointing last night. We carried little or no threat going forwards, and I can't remember their keeper having to make a save.
Young Slater worked hard but was totally outplayed by his opposite number, Odin Bailey and their back four can't have had many easier nights, although their Centre-half and captain Bajrami was very assured.
One goal was always going to win it, but as Phil pointed out it was self inflicted, we were guilty all night of playing it around at the back and finally it was a loose ball by Sam Graham (I think) that led to the goal. We must also have set a new record for back passes to the keeper.
In a tight game, where in open play we were carrying no threat, it was very frustrating that when we have a free kick 30 yards from their goal out wide, that we went backwards every time and subsequently lost it. Perhaps it was me, but I would have thought that putting the ball into the mix as it were from a set piece was our best option.
As is well documented these things do tend to go in cycles, and although I don't get to watch the U18s that often, perhaps I'm not the best to judge, but like Phil, I do love the Youth Cup, and haven't missed a game for Six years, including exotic trips to the likes of Oldham, Bolton, Fleetwood, Reading, Preston and Millwall. I would say last nights performance was right up there as one of the least memorable.
Still, its not all bad, not sure who Woodward was referring to 'as losing our main men to the Mancs', but given that its probably worth noting that in the previous round, Manchester United lost to Derby and Manchester City, lost to errr.....Plymouth Argyle.
