I'm gearing up to trot down to St Andrew's for tonight's FA Youth Cup game v Birmingham City (7pm). We're not quite snowed in yet at Carrier Bag Firm HQ - so, I'll get on it sharpish.
The winners go into the Last 16. The draw has already been made - Bury or Aston Villa away (they also play tonight). I absolutely love the Youth Cup. The players really go for it. I've been at some games where the team with fewest going down with cramp after 75mins effectively wins. We've been resting players up for this one. The BlueNoses will want it, a lot, with the prospect of (Shit On The) Villa in the next round.

I'll whack some team news and updates on my twitter

and copy what I can to this thread. Eventually - a report on the Blog. You lucky people....

Cheers Phil,

I will snuggle up to the radiator(nickname for Mrs Treeton) and await your updates with interest :)

Sorry - what was that Treeton Blade ? Do I think there are any good prospects in this year's U18s? I'm sorry mate - you have to ask Pinchy apparently.....

I`ve seen the U18s on a few occasions this year, and although I am, not one to criticise young kids making their way, this bunch fall below the standard we have become used to seeing.

Maybe it`s a cycle thing, but something is awry this term.

Ps, full kudos for going again tonight, i went to Leyland last night and would really struggle to `go again`.

Respect.

All I will say is the side which will play tonight in the FA Youth Cup will be very different from a Saturday morning U18 at Shirecliffe side. For eg, maybe sometime first team fringer & already made his Championship debutant Regan Slater Will play. He captains our U23s - but is still Youth Cup qualified. Sam Graham Jordan Doherty David Parkhouse George Cantrill. All would normally be U23. But, may play U18 tonight.

Alright, none of them measure up to Joe Ironside. But, they can give it a go.

I do think it's cycles though like you say

Those players plus Norrington-Davies make us so much stronger.

The right back berth is a strange one, seemed to have played with a series of trialists all season in the league, think it might be Tommy Williams again tonight, he played v Burton in the last round.

Look forward to your report and its a reminder of how young some of our u 23s are. The 18s are the last of the Academy teams and do give it a go

I like the look of Cantrill, but worry about his lack of height if he wants to be a central defender, needs to be put on the rack,no pain without gain George

Both teams in it. But, I'm saying the BlueNoses shaded that. Although, United did restrict them to just long range shots.
Parkhouse is too isolated up top for us.
⏳ We are 25mins away from the CrampZone
Stay Tuned

This years 18’s are not a patch on the previous 2 years sides. One or two good young players not enough of a threat going forward and don’t keep the ball as well as the other sides. Obviously Slater is doing well and looks a player but after that other than Oliver Greaves ( currently injured ) possibly Sam Graham if he improves technically I wouldn’t say there are too many others that will grace the first team in the future.

Is it just my imagination or do the u-23s and u-18 both seem to be doing much worse this season?

I agree Dream. Slater is the stand out with Greaves following. Such a shame about his injury.

Thanks for that reference. Put me in my place as a predictable poster! Only credit I can still claim is that I doubted the spelling of his surname on the team sheet. Sorry about that result - but enjoy your beer.
So close to being me...thought about it...couldn't be arsed. I shall have to complain to Becky about working me out too hard in the mornings, makes me tired.

Both teams are very very young. Slater missed several games through injury and suspension add Callum Semple has missed 11 months with injury. He is a huge part of the defense. Jake Bennet is out for up to year and Oliver Greaves who was buzzing has a similar injury to Semple and will miss a year.
These players were replaced by even younger replacements....... with the club working with small numbers at 18s and 23s to develop the players quicker it really effects the teams when players are injured.

But remember, results don’t matter if one or two players make it to the first team squad.

Bit harsh when one has already been in the first team.

Don't know if othets feel the same but I'm looking for Binnion to prove himself. We lost our main men to the Mancs and inevitably will miss them. Team results are just one measure of course.

Recruitment is the key I suggest. Not easy to compete with the big boys but we did well picking up their 'rejects'.

Thanks for all the info and reports Blades.

All this knowledge and experience you are getting is great and thanks for passing it on. Travelling to Brum last night was some commitment. True Blades indeed.
