Kop atmosphere

I don't understand: why would you doing your best in terms of vocal support mean you make the distinction between yourself and "the fans"?

Because I don’t associate myself with them as a like-minded group. Many of our ‘fans’ are Grade A morons who ‘support’ our club in name only when in truth they are destructive. That’s incontrovertible isn’t it? Just read some of the negative drivel on here.

If you're happy to accept that fans aren't all like minded and sing to varying degrees. (So much so that you wont refer to yourself as a fan in order not to associate yourself with them) then why didn't you make the same distinction in your initial criticism of "the fans"?

Atmosphere was terrific on the Kop last night, you won’t get many better atmospheres in the all seater era than that.

Thiough some with an anti Kop agenda don’t want to admit that.

Yep. Totally. Those moaning about the support?!? WTF. Thought we were excellent considering the drab 90 mins of 0-0 football that was on display.

I thought Ricky started off fairly loud in the first 10 minutes but then he was pretty flat throughout. Especially after half time where he really should get behind the team. Expected him to be like that though.

Shame.

Ah excellent. I’ll place this alongside the space for opposition to Samir Carruthers in my Agenda folder. It was blank a week ago too – quite a busy few days this.

Obviously not loud enough mate, as the atmosphere was poor according to you.
You're as responsible for creating an atmosphere as everyone else, and apparently you failed.

I suppose I did. I should have got a microphone built into my throat...

I do all I can. As do others. If just a few thousand more did it would be deafening.

The pork sucked the life out of the occasion with their bottling it tactics, unlike us with a weakened team putting their strongest side to the sword 2-4. Bottle made in s2

When someone makes a blanket criticism of "the fans", a stand, or simply just the "atmosphere" they are criticising you, me and the "others" you refer to.

I just wish people would stop talking about the crowd as if it is a single entity, that can be controlled.

stood 2/3rd up the kop. Atmosphere seemed great from there. Not sure who we think we are judging ourselves against really. I think it's as good if not better than 90% of away grounds I visit and it's as good as many years ago.

I think nostalgia isn't what it used to be on here

Liverpool's Kop all standing up today.

Obviously Man City at home is a bigger game for them than the Sheffield derby is for us...

I sincerely hope that the HJC members who have consistently tried to stop the return of standing at football are sticking to their guns by remaining seated...

Isn’t standing up at Anfield dishonouring the memory of the victims of the Hillsboro disaster?

The Liverpool fuckwits against standing are infuriating aren't they? And sadly our scared authorities allow them to have influence.

But my point is if 16,000 Liverpool fans can stand for this game why can't 10,000 of ours for the derby? Maybe their fans' legs work better than ours or something.

We’re judging ourselves against ourselves.

Don't rate the Kop on the noise it makes against our local rivals, judge it on the noise it makes against clubs who struggle to bring 1000 to BDTBL.

BDTBL has lost some of it's intimidatory traits, maybe that's down to six seasons in L1...

Now should be an absolute peak time for our atmosphere/vocal support. With that in mind it should be a big talking point for us. Because no one can claim it's great, or improving.

It's obviously a wider issue in English football but you can only focus on your own club.

Making a humble start in the face of doubt, suspicion and repressive actions, the groups early focus was to build on its small membership with the right people whilst demonstrating the positive attributes they would bring to the Celtic support. This was mainly achieved by witty and humorous banners often aimed at the opposition and by congregating in areas of the ground where they could stand, sing and positively affect the atmosphere. In time the small banners grew to larger banners, to more frequent banners, to small tifos, to more frequent tifos, to larger tifos. Similarly, the Group found its home early within Section 111 of Celtic Park and gradually built on its presence here year on year.

Given the depressingly draconian way in which football in Britain is policed and stewarded, plus the fact that most fans simply accepted their overzealous nature, then it would take some time before the Green Brigade began to make its mark.

How many of those who stood on the Kop on Friday will be at the Preston game and backing the Blades (at very reasonable prices)? There's more than one way to show support - I will be there, making a noise, sitting down. My guess is that 14000 Blades from Friday night will not be at the Preston game. Attendance is optional, but please don't assume that standing up and making a noise is the only way to support a club.

This is well worth reading for anyone interested in organised support initiatives...

A difference and a difficulty for us is that we'd have to use the Kop, our natural focal point, to achieve anything like what Palace and Celtic have done. And there's not much space available on there. There's space on the BLUT but too many wouldn't move there from the Kop and we'd need those vocal types to get similar results - and given they're in an ever decreasing minority it's obvious to see how it handicaps us.
The left side at the front of the Kop could be the only option but everybody sits down around there. And how many would sacrifice a better view elsewhere to go there? The back left is too far away from the pitch and would need big numbers.

But as for the possibility of a full on 'Ultras' style group, I don't think our fans are generally of the right character for that. So I'd never quite aim for that.

added to #50.....

Throughout the early years the Green Brigade had no relationship with the Club. All banners and displays would be taken in as the stadium gates opened for everyone, there was neither prior communication nor access for set-ups and should the materials be refused entry for whatever reason – which happened often – then they would be smuggled in by alternative means. The Group’s clearly stubborn and somewhat militant nature, coupled with its unashamedly political aspect would cause conflict with the Club and other authorities. Such problems still exist to this day.

In spite of this, the Green Brigade continued to grow in number and influence. Squeezed up the very back rows of Section 111 they soon made the area their own by encouraging other fans wanting to join in with the singing to come over and join them. The Club and authorities took issue with this on grounds of health and safety (overcrowding/crowd control) and after a few incidents and clashes the first formal contact from the Club was made to the Green Brigade. A meeting was arranged between both parties where the Club offered to provide the Green Brigade a block of 300 seats within Section 111 which the Green Brigade would be responsible for.

At the start of the 2010/11 season the Green Brigade’s presence at Celtic Park was cemented with their official section. It was the first time that any ultras section of note was seen in the UK and it immediately not only made a massive improvement to Celtic Park but was noticed much further afield. From here the Green Brigade were really able to maximise their potential and went on to create some iconic and memorable tifos and atmospheres whilst making the smaller, run-of-the-mill games a bit more bearable by providing a constant, vibrant atmosphere.

From small acorns....

Thank christ for the voice of common sense. I have a ST on H Block which was stood up for the whole of the game on Friday. My back was fucked and I had to sit down at half time to recover. Not everyone in the ground has an A1 fitness certificate.

There's zero or little political beliefs being administered at BDTBL... the title of 'Ultras' also gets taken out of context with English clubs...
I applaud any one individual or part of a group who wants to create something positive at BDTBL, if certain folks/authorities see this as an issue/problem, it's then that all parties should meet.

I thought it was the quitest Lane derby I've ever attended and I've been to them all since we resumed hostilities in the early 90s. The usual groups on the back of the kop doing their own thing and not joining in with each other. What's all that about? There was a constant wall of noise but very little singing. Saying all that I barely heard Wendy either. The game certainly didn't help.

Maybe the essence of live football is changing? I blame the mobile phones. If people are not bitching on the Shoutbox then they are waving about the torches, and then there are the countless people recording whatever happens to be going on to get on Twitter. And did I mention the vlogging?

It were different in the old days.

If the Kop could sing together there'd be no problem.

It really shouldn't be hard - notice which chant's the loudest, and pick it up.

I think you have a point. People can't keep their bloody phones in their pockets for more than five minutes.

Where did you get the 16000 figure from for the Liverpool Kop ?

Its actually not much bigger than ours.

Liverpool Klop :D
