Poor old Ron is having a hard time of it at the moment. Anthony Wordsworth has just been given community service and a fine for giving a policeman a back hander at the Blues Xmas party and then today Ron has just sacked Nile Ranger for proving that he is the complete twat we really hoped he wasn't any more for breaches of club discipline. Not anything to do with this thread, but as there is still no news on Lenny's departure I knew you would like to aware of Ron's woes. Come on chaps £850k should do it now, worth every penny.

If we're only talking a hundred grand or so more than this is very frustrating and wish we could get him in, we certainly need another midfielder of quality.

Not with just six months left on his agreement it ain't.........Ron can squeeze this lemon as much as he likes but Wilder won't go that extra yard at this stage. Ron's a berk, the extra half a mil or so would allow orange Phil to invest in new talent, but hey, it's his club and he should be allowed to fuck around as much as he likes.

I think one of the problems is that have midfield players unavailable and are running out of confidence in Brown. They need players in to replace Leonard and others who are unavailable yet do not trust a manager who could be sacked to bring them in.

Stick your £850k where the sun don’t shine.

Given the run around your lad at the top has given us, and considering what’s left on the players contract, we should formally reduce our offer by several hundred thousand and give you till Monday to take it or leave it.

Your Southend United FFS. And your trying to act like Liverpool over Coutinho.

Embarrassing.

Sage advice and I will treasure every word of your post. Unfortunately we none of us know what Ron Martin's rationale is at this time. He has been known to mis-judge these sort of events before and ended up with no dosh, but at least we will have the pleasure of Lenny's company until the season's end if that's the way it unfolds.

ps - the £850k was a wind up which was naughty of me.

Could be that Ron wants out, waddya think Roots?

Ron's behaviour smacks of fiscal illiteracy, how else can you explain this streak of infantile obstinacy? I doubt any club worth it's weight (that's us mate) will allow Ron's idiotic idea that a player, any player, who has just a few months left on his contract, will get the full transfer value. Ron should take the money and run, otherwise he'll be left with bugger all, and have to justify to you and your mates why he can't afford new players.

Off topic, but we have been waiting for our new ground to be a reality since 2008. By the looks of things we are now very close* to Southend Council agreeing the latest plans and then work will start for real. There is no way that Ron can financially walk away from the club until the new complex is complete and Root Hall has been sold for housing.

*we know this because brand new fences painted in club colours has been erected all around the perimeters of the land. Surely a sign that things will happen soon......................please!

Ah! That magic 'indicator' that something's happening. Just wait until the players ask where the traffic cones have gone. Ron will have taken them as makeshift outlines to your new stadium, I mean, a chairman's got to save a quid wherever he can, right? Given the pre-season gumph about promising Len that he can leave if you weren't in the hunt for promotion this season, I think Ron's slippery tongue is as reliable and trustworthy as that lawn he chooses to disguise his bald pate with.

Southend’s Chairman must be either stupid, or flush with money and not need it. Those can be the only explanations for him turning down the money this January.
Fact is, Southend are further away from promotion than last season, so the main reason for taking a gamble on keeping him has gone.
Wilder however is still not in the driving seat here. They know we really want him, and if we leave the party next week then that leaves Millwall a free run to step in at the end of the month to screw them over.
Wilder could well be then sick as a parrot at missing out.

It all depends on if the lad himself really wants to come to us, or just wants to leave Southend. If it’s us, fine we can wait til summer.

If you don't get started soon it's likely to be scuppered again in the next recession. It seems to have dragged on for eternity. It's a shame because you should be able to sustain a championship club really, despite the competition from the London clubs. Look at what Brighton have achieved.

Despite the frustration at this end, I have to admire your chairman, he is doing what is best for Southend United football club.

Got to say, if £700k plus add ons is the offer, that's pretty good for a player with
no experience above League One, and 6 months left on his contract.

Do you think, if our bid stays the same, your chairman would not budge, and lose the best part of three quarters of a million quid?
Or would he be the business man and take the money?

He may not understand the life-affirming value of a good syrup gag, but when this Len deal is either done or dead I am going to miss Rootshallbloke. He makes me smile. :)

At the start of this season I was giving it large that we were really going for auto promotion and Lenny was integral to that. I then went on to mount a rearguard action to protect the virtues and values of our chairman in the face of polite criticism on this board. I also said that Nile Ranger would be our hero and Phil Brown was the bloke for the job of getting Southend promoted. Recent history shows that my musings were seriously flawed as we are more or less out of sight of promotion, Phil Brown is quickly cementing his latest nobhead reputation amongst the Blues faithful and Nile Ranger has turned out to be Nile Ranger. Our playing surface this season is shite and all in all Rootshallbloke is pretty drepressed at this very moment.

So, what do I think our chairman will do in the case of Lenny vs The Blades? Truthfully, in light of my previous prediction shouts, I do not have a clue. But because I can't resist a challenge, he will sell to you provided you're still in the market for Lendog.

Ever so slightly off topic Rooty, but what has Nile Ranger ' allegedly ' been up to ?

Yet to really come out, but multiple breaches of club discipline, lateness for training and games are mentioned. The fact that he has been playing like a complete donkey will also have featured. The timing is a bit odd and some are suggesting that the sacking has happened now to deflect some of the disenchantment that is coming Phil Brown's way. It is also thought that some of the squad were very unhappy that Nile was retained by the club whilst, and after, he was banged up for on-line fraud of an old lady.

Anyway, back on topic, up your bid, we deserve it.

In light of your previous predictions, looks like Leonard will stay and we'll get him in Summer.
(Wilder won't pay more, we missed 2 signings in the last transfer window because of this stance.)

We went down that road with our 2 previous managers :(
Many of us thought we'd done well to get first Clough, then Adkins but still ended up feeling like you do now

According to The Star one of the sticking points is that Southend want all the money up front. Is Rug Ron cash-strapped?

Alan Nixon (the sun) Who actually does normally get things right say we are in for him again and close to agreeing but it’s just difficult to deal with Southend.

I have to admit I do like our transfer policy of scouring League one for the best youngish players.

More of a case he knows we are desperate.

Fair play to them him/them alright us blades kicking off every time we sell a player for less than we think they’re worth but when boots on the other foot we’re not happy about it

Exactly this.

I’m Not confident we’d have held firm if the roles had been reversed. Fair play to them ino

Perhaps there's just a small chance that our Board will have watched and learned from "big Ron's" determination ....... :tumbleweed:

IMO and I'm sure its fact in the majority of cases, if you sit tight for 6 months not only do you keep an obviously important player for a further 6 months,if the player has the right attitude you may even have a player who steps it up a gear and then this increases the pool of teams interested pushing up the value. there are cases where this won't work, Adams being one, reckon he may have gone into a sulk.

Of course Leonard's value isn't increasing so he may just end up being a later signing in the window (hence Wilder's deadline foe them to decide).

Depends which value we are talking about, the financial one or the one for the team. he could mean the difference between relation or even a late Play Off Push.

How I see it is Say Fleck is out of contract in the summer we are in and around the Play Offs, would we let him go for £700k in Jan and cost us a Play Off place or do we keep him in the hope he can and will see us over the line and lose him for free once he's done his job, maybe he will even sign a deal after all?

You got to think how strong is negotiation position.

Leonard - no chance promotion to champ with Southend this year. Manager on verge of sack, issues in dressing room just sacked Ranger.

Will want to come to SUFC and replicate Fleck etc. Who I’m pretty sure is on good money now and Leonard will want some of that.

Brown - won’t get a say in anything.

Southend Chairman - can lose him for nothing in a few months. Won’t go up or down this year gives them more money next year to try for promotion.

I think he will move it’s just a mater of when.
