Who's posted most messages on this thread btw? I've managed 56. Do I win? I bet I don't.

It's a bit of an old chestnut, but whatever anyone thinks of Ron, I think he's shown us what's possible, even with a player who, according to some posters, wants to come here.

To cherry-pick a previously used comment about there being no actual auction for the player (assuming Millwall are interested or actually willing to pay a fee comparable with the £700K quoted above), little Southend have shown how a desire to keep hold of a player (again, one who is meant to be keen on coming here) overrides other reasons/excuses for selling at a worryingly low price.. All of which is pre-Wilder, so I hope our past timidity in the market place is well behind us.

Anyone expecting like for like, as in being comparable to Coutts, is likely to be disappointed.

Good poker move by Wilder to time limit the bid.
forces their hand. Also if we drop out Millwall can table a much lower bid.

Good....take it or leave it Rug man....we cannot be pissing around in this window, if it's not accepted move on to other targets, of which I am certain Wilder will have a few in mind.

I'm in total agreement

How near? and can a pre-arrangement be announced before Jan 1st ?
Preston did today with Louis Moult

While that seems risky (especially with Millwall sniffing around) we can't waste time on getting a replacement for Coutts.
The lad clearly wants to come and it seems pretty obvious they need the money and they aren't pushing for automatic promotion any time soon.
We unsettled him in the last transfer window, I think putting a deadline on the offer is a great approach.
It is if we've got an alternative to go for if we're turned down. If we haven't, then it's really stupid.

Yes it can. Preston have just done it with Louis Moult today.

I imagine CW knows we need him through the door and ready to play Derby (on 1st) or at least the Pigs

Difference with Moult though is that he's injured beyond 1st January so won't be playing any games for them in the meantime.

Southend will play Leonard in every game they can so I don't think they'd be happy to sign off and confirm the deal before January.

I think with Moult its ok to announce a January signing early as he is in another country. For football purposes Scotland is the same as France, its another FA

Am I the only one on here distinctly underwhelmed by us going back in for Leonard ?

I can’t say I know much about him but Wilder’s recruitment is generally on point: Baldock, Blackman, CCV, Moore, Clarke, Carruthers, Fleck etc. All look like decent level championship players. Based on this alone I’m happy if Wilder is happy.

It is a bit underwhelming if he's to be the main midfielder we sign in January to replace Coutts.

But there aren't too many suitable alternatives out there. Especially if our budget is small. For example, three suitable loan signings have recently started games for their PL clubs - Sam Field, Scott McTominay and Ainsley Maitland-Niles. And it's obviously hard to sign anyone of a high calibre on a permanent basis, especially mid season.

Ultimately I think Leonard's a very safe signing who we can't go far wrong with so I'd be happy to see him sign, even for 750k.

Think that's a fair question to ask.

Let me ask one - what do we do if Fleck/Lundstram picks up an injury - or we are that unlucky and both do?

The August window when closed, did us out of Leonard and the kid (stuck at Sheffield station allegedly).

So we went into September short of a CM as cover. We now don't have Coutts or the cover, so in effect we are 2 short in CM.

We need options - is it Leonard? no one will know if he can step up, but it's a difficult spot to fill in January and CW & AK (presume) have always fancied Leonard.

What other options do we have? The fact that on other threads some are bemoaning Bash in CM shows we have an issue.

Just been sent off and Bradford have scored. Last game for Southend today ? Looks like we could have done with him today with all 3 midfielders out

I think we've got our man. This picture (from Sarfend's game v Bradford yesterday) clearly shows that Phil Brown's been given the trousers from Knilly's blue suit as part of the deal.

The United scout is there too. He had his SUFC woolly hat on.

I really don't get this Ryan fixation, currently scoring once every 11 games and only one assist all season so far and that's in the pub league so how well is he going to do in the championship?.
Almost guaranteed to end up being another of the many squad players to bulk up numbers but deemed not worthy of the starting 11 a few months from now.
We don't need any more forwardly challenged crabs in midfield but some who can actually score goals and make assists by going forward. I know we don't have much cash but if we are dipping into lower leagues or overseas at least go for some with a better track record of goals and assists.
Some up and coming young un half as good as Michael Brown was would be fine as a start. No more squad players and defensively orientated players please, we need some in midfield and up top who can cause a threat to the opposition, teams that are too defensively orientated and can't score eventually go down.

You'd better pass that on to CW urgently.
He can't be aware of that.

Agree.SEB.
His L1 sofa stats I posted earlier shows how poor he appears , more worryingly particularly creatively!
Miles worse off then Fleck and Coutts in the championship and even worse than the current boy boy !

How much are his poor goals/assists stats down to him being poor rather than Southend being poor? I would hazard a guess that McDonald had low returns in both categories in his 2nd season with us – certainly wasn’t due to him being rubbish. I’ve no idea what he’s like to be honest, but I doubt Wilder would have invested so much effort on a player he wasn’t extremely confident would be able to make the step up and significantly improve the squad.

No more idea what he is like, any more than you I guess; the Sofa Stats which are based upon his last 2 years performances. So that covers the time when Sarfend were near the top. His League career record at Southend in L1and L2 as South Bucks eluded to, are actually worse.Just 1 goal in 12 games and an assist every 19. (Just looked it up) .

To see the results for me were no better and some worse than SC pretty was pretty alarming ,now with the new stats I am just amazed and pretty incredulous we are offering £750k on him.
For that sort of money we could have had someone like Bradley Dack.

I hope i am wrong and stats aren't everything.
