We’ll have to agree to differ, mate. My view, which as you know is the only one that matters, is that he is the best of three excellent midfielders. Our dip and his injury have not happened by co-incidence.

None of that is intended to diminish Fleck and Duffy. I ❤️ all three. I also rate Lundstram and think he will get better. I bet they would all like the Coutts-Royce back, though.

Coutts is possibly United's most important player, in terms of the style of play under Tufty, but still think Fleck is the better of the two. Especially considering he's three years younger, too. Duffy's just the icing on the cake. And Lundstram will be a player, I'm with you on that as well!

What a pleasure to argue, nay amicably discuss, the merits of excellent midfielders as opposed to who’s the least shite between Doyle and Monty. What I’m certain of is that each thinks the other is pretty good...

Absolutely! Said similar in the Blackman thread. Oh for the days of Danny Coyne as back-up...

Then he’s a loony.

We have gone back 2 windows running and if his form carries on sit supposedly is and we don't get him in next month then surely there will be more than just us in the queue come June don't you think?

I don’t know mate. I’ve no recollection of ever seeing him play. I do know what any sensible Southend player given the opportunity to sign for Sheffield United would do. Or do you think Premiership clubs will be knocking?

I know as much as you Pinchy but regardless of where we are in the league there will allways be someone willing to offer a quid more.if he’s as good as Wilder seems to believe we need to be securing his signature in Jan

Surely this lad is going to sign in January, given what we have achieved this season, and that he is out of contract (I think??) in the summer.

We need him - short in midfield with Coutts out (and other injuries/suspensions).

True, but if he wants to chase the money then Wilder will soon cool off his interest i reckon. He has to want to play for the Blades - it's the new rule, and long may it continue :)

After today's absolutely abysmal performance away at Bristol Rovers Phil Brown may be seeking new employers soon. Today was a must win to keep us in touch with the top teams. Chances are now that Ron will say enough, which in turn could make Lenny's release in January far more likely.

Don't know if it was you that came on here pre season excited at your signings of older players
We did warn you

It was me, but I'm guessing you already knew that. You did warn me, and I should have listened but hey, I'm an optimist..............every season.

Sounds like Phil Brown had a bit of a meltdown after the game, seems to be suggesting he's lost the dressing room?

It does look as if some of the team have stopped trying for him. The consensus amongst our fans board was that a parting of the ways was imminent but a press statement from Ron late on Sunday blasted the players but he wasn't critical of Phil. Go or stay we need to refresh the team in January so extra funds may/will be needed. I would be amazed if we don't cash in on Lenny now.

Cracking cartoons of Ron by the way, as always you had me in stitches.

Can he make the step up?
Fortunately football isn't won on the pitch or statistics but I did a comparisons on RL with our Coutts Fleck and Samir C.
(Unfortunately one of the trinity - MD the app had a glich and wouldn't do a comparison,)
The orange figures are the comparison players.
One these figures it seems to reflect my disappointment with SC.
So is RL just a shit SC?

It certainly made me wonder if he is worth all this effort.

CRE -Creativity

The Star reports today that Wilder is refusing to give up on Ryan Leonard. Apparently a source from Roots Hall said we made another bid last week. I'm therefore pleased to see that this thread is alive and well and I feel privileged to have contributed to it. It will, after all, become the longest ever thread about the transfer of a player, if, and when, the Leonard saga eventually comes off, or not.

I haven't heard much about Lenny Ryan this season. Is he still Southend's outstanding player, like he has been in the previous few seasons? More importantly, is he really any better than what we've got? I mean, he's got to be at least as good as Lundstram surely? But is he in the same league as Coutts, Fleck, Duffy or even that crazy Carruthers bloke?

(BTW - I am pretty sure that Carruthers will be gone in January. My prediction is he'll go to Charlton and we'll bring Ricky Holmes back this way. Got to be worth another thread that one hasn't it?)

While that seems risky (especially with Millwall sniffing around) we can't waste time on getting a replacement for Coutts.
The lad clearly wants to come and it seems pretty obvious they need the money and they aren't pushing for automatic promotion any time soon.
We unsettled him in the last transfer window, I think putting a deadline on the offer is a great approach.

700k is too much in the first place but if we really want him then I think it'd be daft if any final offer is less than 800k, unless we know they'd accept 750k for example.

I want to see him through the door on 1st January. We can't be wasting time.
