He obviously made a few bob in the US and when his mum died and the Salisbury Road house was sold, he gave the proceeds to charity. Mrs ISC was fund raising for Lydgate Infants which was Joes's old school and IIRC, he gave £40k to help equip a canteen to allow kids to have hot dinners. I understand the rest of the money went to other local charities.

No blue plaque or anything of course on the house, but then what would you expect of Sheffield Council. A major international star who helped the profile the city around the world - no thank you!

For clarification, my Nan lived on Salisbury Road, Joe lived on Tasker Road, next one along. I think a blue plaque would be a great idea, I have no idea how such a thing might be proposed?

The donations really are a very heartwarming thing to read about.

Assuming that the present owners of the house would be happy to have a blue plaque it is a great idea.

Get sending those emails Trigger.

Sorry for being a bit ghoulish here, but I am really surprised the Laitner(I think that was the name) murders and subsequent manhunt have not been turned into a major film,Colin Firth would make a very good `The Fox`,that young lass from Game of Thrones, the Mother of those Dragons, could play the daughter who survived

Do they do blue plaques anywhere else but in London? (just a comment on the continued divisions in British Society, nought else)

I'm sure I've seen a blue plaque to commemorate Guido Fawkes in York

Edit.

No I didn't dream it.

No disrespect, Fred, but I really wouldn't think so. What that young woman went through that day was absolutely terrible both in terms of what happened to her family and what was done to her and it was simply appalling that The Star successfully applied for Press restrictions to be lifted so that the indignities she suffered were fully reported. The way the case was covered caused a huge controversy at the time and the paper got many complaints and cancelled subscriptions as a result. She went through back then and it would be awful for her to have this whole can of worms reopened.

Is it coz he was a Blade?

I thought similar but hen wondered if I was being all paranoid-Blade and getting a bit carried away with the Star/Council historic anti-United thing.

They do blue plaques and there is one on Crookes WMC to clebrate Def Lepppard's first ever gig. That can't be a quarter of a mile from Joe's house on Tasker Road.

I've just found a list of others which seems rather fitting on this thread about local history, but not had a chance to work through them yet. I guess there is a nice tedious job for someone with a few spare hours to click through and check for any anti-United leanings.

Yes I do agree on reflection, maybe when she passes away, but then there is the question of her offspring to consider, and I would not want to add to the notoriety of the killer whilst ever he is alive

Best left well alone

Felt I should do something, Vern likes the Indian Restaurant nearby, would break his heart if I let a building fall on it.

I recall the basil Laitner episode which from what I recall no one brought to justice.
He was our first solicitor and we used the company to buy our first house in 1962.
I recall seeing the account recently when we were going through our memory box.
His office was somewhere near the top of Angel Street.

Hutchinson got Life.

He directed traffic from the top of
Commercial Street , Fitzallan Square and Haymarket which is out of the picture.
UTB
Do you remember the Duke of Darnall, who according to my auntie and uncle, often would try to direct the traffic in the city centre before being pulled away by the police

Was that him who dressed as a Lady?
No, he lived with Russian Edna until she got murdered by a lorry driver.

This is Duke of Darnall (his real name is Harry Taylor) who was a deaf mute. He was very well known in the 1940s but the deaf community avoided him because of his eccentric ways

That's Fred!

In his younger days.
