Wilder comments

Did he say “I fucked up with the team selection”?

If he didn’t say something along those lines then he wasn’t very honest.

HB, this is a general observation suggested by your comments, so please bear this in mind when reading.

I take your point about team selection, but it seems to be the case that comments are made after the game and not before. It would add far more to the piquancy that is contained within your post if I'd read your feelings before the game began. As supporters of course we have the right to criticise, but aren't we all masters of the obvious once a game has finished?

The general tone once the team selection was announced was one of pleasure, especially considering Fleck's absence. Quite a few posters were happy to finally see Clarke and Donaldson together, and a few commented that Lundstram's presence would be ideal against a physical Ranger's side.

This part isn't directed towards you HB, but hindsight is a wonderful gift, but hardly any of us can imagine how a game will span out, let alone consider mistakes or errors. Since Wilder took control we've done fantastically well. One defeat, and please remember this wasn't a conclusive defeat, is exactly what it is. It's times like this that Chris and Alan will earn their money, and you can bet your half and half scarf that everything will be done to correct what went wrong.

Like most of us, I can't recall a better time to be a Blade. The quality of management is better than anything I've witnessed before, and the recruitment of players has been first class. Yet we suffer one loss and for some it means nothing less than the Inquisition is good enough! Maybe some people just don't deal with drama too well....or perhaps they prefer to turn drama into a crisis?

Wilder is too canny, too knowing, and won't tolerate complacency or excuses to cloud the issues that need addressing. We'll be fine, maybe this is the kick up the arse the team needs to remind it of what's needed. Please don't anyone overreact, it doesn't help and it's not what's required.

You won't be able to read my comments from before the game, because when the team lineup was released i was in the pub, and disinclined to come on here and say what I felt as i was too busy supping real ale.

I may not have explained myself as well as I'd have liked.

Most of my thoughts were directed at supporters in general, so I hope you'll take this on board.

I was excited and confident with the line up, I thought that the front three would be a nightmare for QPR.

About 797-2 in Wilders favour when it comes to getting decisions right.

Problem is, the team have set the standard consistently through the season so far, so when they fall well below that standard (which they did last night) I think it's fair for people to see it as a poor performance. It's not the end of the world and I go back to my pre-season expectation of good days and bad days - that was just a bad one and we only need to get concerned if that becomes the norm, which I really can't see happening.
Fair enough, but I maintain that had we not conceded that freak goal, the broad appraisal of that performance would have been much more positive.

There’s more than a hint of premature dummy spitting by a good few, in my opinion.

Freak goal? I'm wondering if Blackman threw it into his own goal deliberately.

Then there's Wilder picking a team to do a specific job not blaming himself when they don't do it and being labelled less than honest.

My wife summed up the performance this morning quite nicely (she watched it on a stream) when she said that "that wasn't the Sheffield United we've been watching all season". I think she hit the nail on the head and it also kind of summarised CW's comments.

Agreed, but if you play well “above average” all season, you still have a worse performance of the season at some point, one is absolute and one is relative.

It wasn’t great last night by any stretch, but it was far from poor. Remove the freak goal, we come away with a decent away point, and there would be literally nobody complaining about that performance.

The dummies are working their way out quIte early.

In fairness alco, I think if we'd not conceded that goal but still played as we did and got a 0-0, there would still be murmurings about the overall performance. You're absolutely spot on and we were always going to have a game or two like that even if we go on to win the league, all teams do - 'eck, we even had one or two bad performances last season. As with those last year, we (as fans) have to accept that all teams have bad games. Doesn't make them a bad side but fans will always moan about a poor performance.

I must admit that I've not trawled through every thread so wasn't aware of the "dummy spitting" going on. If that's the case, then I think people need to take a reality check and remember where we are. We're newly promoted and doing much better than most (if honest) really expected. Our manager changed the team slightly for his own reasons and probably thought we had enough to win it when he did, but several of our players had their first game of the season where very little worked for them - and we lost the game. It hasn't (nor will it IMO) dragged us into a relegation battle and I think we'll see a response on Saturday. If we don't respond on Saturday, and go on to not win any of the next 7 or 8 games with poor performances, then by all means raise concerns but doing it now????FFS.

Got his team selection wrong but he's allowed a mistake every now and again.
How the team and manager respond on Saturday will be telling.

Excellent summation by the gaffer.

They were not better than us. However, they won more races and individual battles and that was the difference. We were a bit unlucky in some regards, but lacked overall quality in the build up to the final third and in the final third.

Still, 2 difficult away night games back to back where 4 points would have been superb. We got 3. Onwards.

Not sure I agree with this view. Had Joc and Clarke buried their sitters and we come away with a 2-1 win then it's a very good win and tactics prevail.
However they didn't and we didn't because our players never scored their goals - that doesn't make the team selection and tactics wrong - just individuals failed to deliver the goods.

A good team performance on Saturday and QPR is history anyway.

It was a shocking game of football quality wise and the officials were also shocking.

What I didn’t like about Wilders starting xi is that it was built to combat them instead of being built to our strengths. We are clearly a better team than QPR when we play how we have been with the same setup but our team lineup negated our strengths tonight. We were very slow and very sloppy on the ball last night and our shape was all over the place at times, Brooks moving back and playing in a deeper midfield role was just baffling to be honest, wtf is he going to do back there when his strengths are being on the last couple of defenders, causing havoc?

In the grand scheme of things there’s not too much to be concerned about because Wilder will have learnt a lot from last night and that’s why he’s a great manager who shouldn’t escape criticism at times if it’s constructive and points out where we went wrong.

I admire him deeply for not mentioning the officials in his interview because they were diabolical. QPR time wasted like hell, kicked us all over without us getting anything, Brooks took most of this, they stayed down for an eternity and took ages with set pieces, all this from just off the top of my head. On one occasion they took ages debating who was going to take a set piece and after about a minute and half they decided to make a sub, now if QPR thought that was the best they’ve played for years then they’re welcome to it, it’s fucking horrible and atrocious to watch.

Yer don't fancy tickets to QPR v Norwich then?

Might just turn out to be a blessing in disguise this. Players and fans may just have been getting a bit too far ahead of ourselves. We’re still a newly promoted club and albeit we have made a great start we have to remember there aren’t any gimmes in this league.
QPR beat Wolves on Saturday so they’re no mugs on their home patch and yet there appeared to be a feeling from some of us at least that we just had to turn up and three points would follow. Well guess what!
If any of the players were carrying the same illusion I suspect they won’t make that mistake again.
In proportion though, just a loss and third in the table, who wouldn’t have taken that in August?

Yep. Will be used as an example to curb any slight signs of complacency - especially given the hightened media coverage the club and the squad are getting due to the fantastic start we have made to this season.

... And it's well worth noting that in spite of their lowish standing in the table QPR have not lost a game at Loftus Road in the league this season.
