I wonder how wilder’s style would cope with a season of consolidation to be honest.
Yep, I don't think he's the consolidating type is he? I was stating that (most of?)us as fans would be ok with a season of upper mid table and no flirting with a survival scrap, although I do accept that there are those who are not surprised at our bothering of the top slots!

Tonight's result might just be the reality check that the players need!!. Wilder clearly wasn't happy and has verbally kicked them up the arse!!. The players need to respond positively on Saturday against dull. I'm sure they will and we can get back on track after a bad day at the office!!. Utb

And this is just why I love Chris Wilder. He isn't in denial like so many other managers.

It was a shocking game of football quality wise and the officials were also shocking.

What I didn’t like about Wilders starting xi is that it was built to combat them instead of being built to our strengths. We are clearly a better team than QPR when we play how we have been with the same setup but our team lineup negated our strengths tonight. We were very slow and very sloppy on the ball last night and our shape was all over the place at times, Brooks moving back and playing in a deeper midfield role was just baffling to be honest, wtf is he going to do back there when his strengths are being on the last couple of defenders, causing havoc?

In the grand scheme of things there’s not too much to be concerned about because Wilder will have learnt a lot from last night and that’s why he’s a great manager who shouldn’t escape criticism at times if it’s constructive and points out where we went wrong.

I admire him deeply for not mentioning the officials in his interview because they were diabolical. QPR time wasted like hell, kicked us all over without us getting anything, Brooks took most of this, they stayed down for an eternity and took ages with set pieces, all this from just off the top of my head. On one occasion they took ages debating who was going to take a set piece and after about a minute and half they decided to make a sub, now if QPR thought that was the best they’ve played for years then they’re welcome to it, it’s fucking horrible and atrocious to watch.

on the up side , 2 away games we,d have tok a point from each we got a third point , and after 15 games we re on 0 points , 2 per game still
like its always been its how we react to it next game , beat hull and its smiles all round

before leeds thought any points would be good

Totally agree, I think that's why he stuck Donaldson up top too, added to our height with Lundstram. In the end it was a war of attrition, we got it down and played at times, but for the majority of the game, it was hoof tennis.

No argument with his comments at all although I'm not one to expect us to play well every week. We were as sloppy in possession as I've seen us this season.

I'm not sure missing sitters can be used as a way of arguing that we deserved something though. If you don't take your chances you only have yourselves to blame and don't deserve anything.

Personally I thought we still played some decent stuff in patches but our final ball or delivery from wide was really disappointing.

"I expect the referee to be average and if they're good then it's a bonus" - another quality Wilder quote.

Personally thought the ref was worse than average tonight and the linesman on the side where Brooks kept getting the rough end of the stick was shocking. Thought a number of their players embarrassed themselves with the play acting just like a number of Leeds players on Friday.

Certainly a poor second half but thought we should have been leading by half time if it weren't for some particularly bad finishing and a freak goal against.

Did he say “I fucked up with the team selection”?

If he didn’t say something along those lines then he wasn’t very honest.

I was surprised at the starting line up. Dropping Sharp after what was probably his best performance all season last saturday and replacing him with Donaldson - who was so poor at Forest that he got subbed within less than an hour. We discussed the merits of who should replace Fleck on another thread and my view was Carruthers. You can go back and read that if you want, but I was saying that Carruthers drives forward from midfield and in that sense is more similar to Fleck, than Lundstram, who is a more defensive player. As usual, I wasn't in the majority view though, as most wanted Lundstram to replace Fleck and got what they wanted. The other big omission was Duffy. He's a key player for us in the midfield - probably the most creative outlet we have. Why Wilder would not have him in the starting line up when we are missing another key player in Fleck was a bit of a mystery tbh.

To be honest, I think Wilder thought he could play a lesser side against QPR and get a result. He got it wrong. Well, he's only human after all and he's got almost everything else right, so I think he's allowed this one. But that's what I think happened.

Anyhow...regardless...we didn't deserve anything from the game and there's going to be matches like that in a season. It's just the way football is.

If there's anything positive to come out of this it should highlight areas of the team where we need to be looking to strengthen in January.

i.e.

Strikers: Clark, Donaldson, Hanson, Sharp. - None of them getting any younger. Who replaces Clark or Sharp if they are out? We don't have anyone capable imo.
Midfield: Who replaces Fleck or Coutts if they are out? I think we saw last night that we don't have anyone who can quite fill those boots at the moment.

That is pretty much exactly what I thought from the game. QPR’s frustration tactics also extended pre-game to their multi-search checks to get in, and shutting off that way to exit that prolonged the Loftus Road stay.

The worst game of football I’ve seen us involved in this season and I include Bolton away in that.

What this does highlight is that our SQUAD still has significant room for improvement and when a few key players are injured / suspended we do look a little short of the mark in several departments.

The January transfer window will decide the eventual outcome of our season ...... we have a lot of money in the "transfer kitty" (in theory) having spent very little so far and it will be interesting to see if the Board make it available to Tufty, or simply use it to reduce their own input.

I would hope to see two or three influential purchases to try and cement a potential top six finish which reflects our success this season ....... most of us would have been happy for a mid-table consolidation at the start of the season

I'd go along with that Cerberus. Thought he got the team wrong last night. Without Duffy and Fleck, we lack that creativity between midfield and the strikers. IMHO, if one is out then Lundstram isn't a bad option but not when both are out. Carruthers was the man for me too. And I am not sure Brooks is yet capable of playing that number 10 role as effectively as Duffy...................yet.

But, all part of the learning curve and I'm sure CW will have learned some more lessons tonight, about his team and himself. In the general scheme of things, we are way ahead of where any of us would have thought and as someone has said, I think most of us would have taken 2 points from the last two away games, one of which (Leeds) looked very tough and QPR is always tricky, especially midweek. We got three points from those games, which is a bonus. Hopefully we can now take advantage of a couple of home games.

I agree with Brooks, but I think he does play the number 10 well - see the pigs and Sunderland. Meaning that part of a front two, not the tip of the midfield 3.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I think we'd have been better off with Clarke and Brooks up top with Carruthers behind, Coutts and Basham/Lundstrum behind them.

It's one defeat, two winnable games at home now. We will always have a blip, it's how we react that makes the difference and so far we've reacted superbly.

Much of our problem, if you can call it such, is that Duffy is an exceptional footballer.

More like he was reacting to the absence of Fleck and giving others a rest by rotating the squad.
It might not have looked quite so bad if our passing had been a bit more competent :(

With all the technology they use now, they get warnings about players who are at high risk of injuries. Sharp and Duffy are high risk contenders for that given their ages and they are regularly subbed off after 60-70 mins. You don't know what's gone off before the game or what information they have. I expected Duffy to play last night but thought Donaldson and Brooks would be up front.

In hindsight, the midfield selection probably wasn't right. He knew Lundstram wouldn't take us up the pitch like Fleck can, so played Brooks in a deeper role to get on the ball and take us higher when we broke out. In practice it didn't work but in theory it made sense.

Too many players had off nights and we didn't deserve to win, but didn't deserve to lose. The game warranted a 0-0.

We didn't deserve to lose, one mistake cost us but it's just a defeat and not the end of the world. We'll win more than we lose this season and that's a fact.

Agree with what you said generally, and with the hindsight of defeat it looks obvious. I too would have preferred Fleck to be replaced with Caruthers, and agree he is more like Fleck and in my opinion better able to keep the ball 8n tight spaces than Lundstram.
What I don’t get, is if you are missing Fleck, who has been one of our assist masters since he arrived, why you would then rest our other assist master? I know it’s a long season, and I know Duffy put a shift in at Leeds, but he could have given us an hour and left the field with us in a better position than when he came in. Being replaced to add combativeness after he had run them ragged for 60 minutes.

Like everyone else, Wilder and Knill are allowed to make errors, and I feel they perhaps made one last night. Obviously Flecks silly booking on Friday was the route cause but it means at least that he has been rested for the weekend.

As for the Don, he has missed a few games and regained fitness, if he were to have played I would have expected it to be for Clarke, who has covered some ground recently. Brooks only got 15 minutes at Leeds, so should have been used up front if Sharp needed resting.

But what’s really pissed me off, Is Baldock coming off injured again. He looks to be one who really struggles to get his body ready for the intensity of games and work we have. Not blaming him, it will come but while we have Freeman injured it means we will lose effectiveness at RB having Bash out there, and also lose his attacking prowess from RCB. Double Whammy.

So in short, From Friday I would have had only Samir in for Fleck and Brooks for Sharp. Don and Lundstram as planned subs to rest Clarke and Duffy, with the third to deal with other plans. But hindsight is great.

Good post but I think Baldock has took some really rough tackles this season and is bound to feel the effects of some of them, there’s been one or two shockers on him.

He was lucky not to get a broken leg against L**ds.

I think the more physical teams in this league have been looking to take out our wing backs. They provide the threat on the overlap so teams are trying to take them out of the game.

They are, and the refs do fuckall about it.

They are, and the refs do fuckall about it.

The standard of refs I have seen this season is awful and I have to say there were better refs in League 1. Which isn't saying much considering Deadman has got the boot.

You saw a different game to me fella.

Our standards have been raised somewhat, it seems. :)

Problem is, the team have set the standard consistently through the season so far, so when they fall well below that standard (which they did last night) I think it's fair for people to see it as a poor performance. It's not the end of the world and I go back to my pre-season expectation of good days and bad days - that was just a bad one and we only need to get concerned if that becomes the norm, which I really can't see happening.

Wilder out! It's an absolute disgrace that we have lost yet another away game in our first season back in the Championship! An absolute farce!

It might not have looked quite so bad if our passing had been a bit more competent :(

Love that comment and supported what I was saying in the car on the way home. I said a few weeks ago that in all my years watching 'em (since John Harris), this is the first time I can remember us having a team where every single player is competent and confident on the ball. Last night was the total opposite to that because so many of them were rushing their release and even knocking too many long. I'm pretty sure this is part of what CW meant when he said we made poor decisions.
