...start referring to this as my favourite Blades side during my life time?

I'm 30, old enough to:
  • Remember the several failed play-off finals
  • Remember the brief spells of Bruce and Speed
  • Remember the cup runs of the late 1990s, beating Coventry on Penalties, that Arsenal goal and the replay
  • Remember the dire times of league one
  • Not quite old enough to remember the promotion at Leicester clearly...
  • Remember the barren spells before the Warnock years
  • Remember the cup runs, the promotion under Warnock and everything that side brought; so many memories, so much character, so much pride - they are, in my mind, the holders of "greatest United side in my life time".
Until...now? A Blade as manager, a Blade as captain. 100 points last season, champions of league one, with Billy as the top scorer in the league. Several Blades in the team of the season, parades through Sheffield, simpleh lovleh sessions on peroneh. Utterly, utterly superb football, a never-say-die attitude, the most organised side I have seen in my life time, a formation that was first introduced to fit the players we had and has since transformed to the formation of choice - a formation that the players know so well, and we have such squad depth and a calibre of players that they can all fit in for one another as needed. Such possession football.

To have the feeling of going into a game feeling confident of winning. I grew to love that last season, never did I expect to be feeling it most weekends in the Championship - the mentality of "I don't care who you are, we're going to give you a game". Beating Barnsley, beating the pigs, now beating Leeds - and all on a relative shoestring budget! That Fleck free-kick, that Brooks turn, Jake Wright looking like he's played at this level all his life, Billy chasing down Rickie Lambert's goal scoring record, Brooks signed to a long-term deal, that Beautiful midfield three and everything they are so good at - all of this and so much more.

When we came up, I asked for one thing - to simply show other teams what we could do, how we liked to play, to show some of the form and the passing football that rightly saw us promoted as champions. My word have we done that, my word do we continue to do that. Bloody hell, am I proud. We lost my Grandad last year, I wish he could've seen this United side play football the way they do - I said to my Dad last night, he'd have never believed us if we'd have told him dem Blades were a little bit like Brazil (he passed away before Wilder was appointed).

It may or may not last, who knows what is possible. But under Wilder and Knill and with this squad of players, I believe. Enjoy every second of it Blades, we deserve to be enjoying our football again.

Up The Blades!

This time next season when we've just beaten Liverpool away to go top of the league.

I've watched the blades since 1989.
The division 1 squad we had then was a team with similar grafting capabilities, but apart from Whitehouse deane and agana, the quality wasn't very good.
I thought the squad we had that started under spackman was outstanding. We all know what happened half way through that season. Thanks Mike Mcdonald.
The promotion squad under warnocks era had quality too,but I think our current team are the most skillful, passionate bunch I've ever supported at the lane.
Amen.

That side were very, very good and then the board ruined my childhood...

30, you say ?
I have shoes older than you ! :)

I can honestly say that this is, pound for pound, the best TEAM since late 60s. Not the best individual players, but definitely the best Manager.

After last night, I started to believe.

Promotion this season, lads.

Feet on the ground lads, we dont want to go all S6 do we. Nothing is decided in October.

I have supported Utd for over 40 years.
I dont know how long you have supported the RAWW. The length of time i have supported the Blades has taught me one thing, never take anything for granted with this club.
Having said all of that we do appear to be better run club now.
Lets see where we are when the January Transfer window shuts.
Its certainly looking good though.
Sorry for being a bit negative.

8 yrs older mate and the triple assault season was brilliant. But this football is on another level. It’s almost Pinchyesque.

The day we win promotion there will be a nod in my dads direction and a twinkle in mi eye.

Up The Blades!

You're a year younger than me. I remember all the things/seasons you mentioned, and for me, what we've seen in the last 18 month tops it all. It's the best football I've ever seen United play...we've killed the ghost of us being "agricultural/hoof-ball/cloggers etc" stone dead and we're playing what I honestly believe is the best football in the division bar none.

So far this season (not even mentioning last season's sheer magnificence) we've thumped the pigs at the sty, beaten several teams who pre-season we were told would batter us, and now gone and won at Elland Road to go top of the league. This IS the best Blades team of my life, and undoubtedly my favourite. Duffy/Fleck/Coutts etc will become the TC/Woodward et al for our generation.

Well I have supported United for over 50 years. I think I know a thing or two, sonny boy.

Not negative at all, mate - all posted in the interests of a bit of balance. Fair points to make.

Like you, I've been sh*t on by this club many times over the years, enough to know to not get ahead of myself. I appreciate your caution.
You're right that nothing is decided in October, I think that's an important point. That said, I do think there's a difference with how Blades on the whole are reacting versus how S6 tend to react. They have a sense of entitlement, of "pissing the league", we have more of an "appreciate the moment for all it's worth" attitude; we don't assume promotion, think we are entitled to anything and don't throw the toys out of the pram when it doesn't quite go to plan.

Like I said in my OP...
"It may or may not last, who knows what is possible...Enjoy every second of it Blades, we deserve to be enjoying our football again."

This time next season when we've just beaten Liverpool away to go top of the league.

With Jurgen Klopp saying "I can't fault the team today. At 3-0 down we could have crumbled, but to have contained them for the last hour showed that we're a strong unit and the two that we conceded in injury time probably made the 5-0 look a bit flattering. Sheffield United have a lot of momentum at the moment and their players work hard for each other."

And I’ll respond with a rant to Klopp banging on about momentum

I'm the same age as you, and I can confirm this is the best it's ever been. I think we'll get promoted this season. I've been stopping myself from getting carried away with it all this season, but as soon as that Brooks goal rolled in I made up my mind.

been going since 79/80, there are a few matches that still live in memory as my greatest blades moments, leicester and the forest semi final to name two, but as a period it's by far the most entertaining and dare i even say emotional time i have ever had as a blade

You’ve never seen a Blades team play so well; so consistently. I know because I’ve shared the same years!

This is special. Time to sweep away the Bladey Inferiority Complex and believe.

What a quality post. A bloody good read. I'm 47 and this is the best blades side I can remember apart from the side that won promotion at Leicester. We've all had to endure some horrible times over the years but at last the tables have been turned and we're able to enjoy our football again. We are UNITED as a club once more and I'm loving every moment of it.

I grew up under Bassett so saw success and high league positions. But the football we’re seeing now is the best I’ve ever seen by a distance. It’s Bassett’s spirit combined with (early) Kendall football. The dream combo.

If Wilder ever gets us promoted again he’ll be out on his own as the manager of my lifetime. Statue material. :)

Yup top quality post Kozzy, i'm 55ish  and can remember the doldrums of the mid to late 70's, a small period of hope under "we'll take more care of you Porterfield...", more doldrums in mid 80's to 88-89, then a golden period, then more doldrums after sir Harry, another golden spell Under Warnock, a small doldrum period, a brief golden year under NC, Weir was our Carlost moment, don't think Adkins had a chuffing clue although most of us thought yes when he was appointed but somehow he got his wires crossed and shorted..but now.....:):):)

It's already my favourite ever team, by an absolute country mile.

And I don't think we've ever had anything like this before.

We have had something like this before and it was in the top tier of English football.

In the 1971/ 72 season, having just been promoted from the 2nd. Division, we started with a 10 match unbeaten run during which we played some sublime football and beat some of the best teams in the country.

In the 4th. game we beat Arsenal 1-0 at Highbury which led the esteemed Sunday Times writer Brian Glanville to describe us as the best team in the country, in a major article he did on us.

This team is excellent and the start to the season terrific, but there is still a long way to go before we can say we have matched that level of excellence, which will stay in my mind forever.

Loved Deane/Agana, Div 1 team after that and the Jags teams. Borbokis was sensational for 6 months, only player as exciting as Brooks imo. But this is the most dynamic, exciting team I've ever seen

...start referring to this as my favourite Blades side during my life time?
