Maggots or Magnet?

Why would a song about a night out with snuff, fags and chip butties suddenly reference fishing rather than beer?

As the real GBS once said

"Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance"

Here all week....
This.

There's nothing that fills the senses more than the smell of a gallon of maggots as anyone who done so will testify.

Can we have a poll on whether it is “and the year is 1889” or “every year...”

It’s “every” for the record. But my piss boils when the other is sung.

Heard it first about the same time being sung by the Rotherham and Kivo lads and it was a night out in Rotherham. Used to sing a long with this for a while until everyone drowned them out by changing it to Sheffield.
Of course it was always Magnet.

That's when I first heard it too and also by the same group of parkgate/rawmarsh and kivo blades . I also remember some lively nights out in Rotherham after going to various away games on the coaches they used to run when the GCB used to get a rousing rendition ;)

As a native Sheffielder though I got fed up with the " Rotherham " reference and kidney punched the fuckers when I heard it and replaced it with " Sheffield ":D:D

There is absolutely no doubt at all that it's " magnet " by the way . I couldn't stand the stuff if I'm honest but every one back then knew it was rocket fuel and a day and a night on it on a match day was not for the faint hearted :)

I always thought it was maggots when learning the song as a lad in the 80s. It took me a long time to work out all the words listening on the kop.

However magnet does make more sense in the context of a night out in Sheffield with woodbines and snuff...

But I actually mix and match maggots and magnet and I'll change it if we lost the last game...

In 16/17 I was mostly singing magnet :)

But it's definitely fill. Why would the song start with filling senses up with things and then jarringly switch to thrilling on the last line?!? And that's what John Denver sang too

;)

I used to come back from match fishing in the days when we would regularly take a gallon of maggots to the Trent and my hands would be orange from turmeric staining.
Me too turmeric came of the hands ok but that chyrisodene that was something else.
I was Trent/Witham open match regular just making a return to the rivers after years on the Commercial fisheries.

Who goes fishing with magnets FFS! Oh hang on...

8 pints on a Satdy night out in Sheffield in the 60's started with a couple of Pints of Magnet in Marples and finished with a couple in the Brown Bear, with all sorts of other stuff in between.I remember the original Magnet was a heavy dark brown/red coloured bitter, you couldn't lift your head off the pillow in the morning,it was proper ale, bloody brilliant !!
