Dick Bate, Cousins and Hague were tossers, I think the other one called Downswell if my memory is correct wasn't to bad?
I started at abbeydale in 1981 and cousins used to be my PE teacher. Gregory then took over in my 3rd year. I'm sure cousins used to play semi pro rugby with Rotherham if my memory serves me well?.

I don't know what he did away from Abbeydale Grange but I do know he was a shit teacher.

Agreed. I always thought he was a shit teacher. I always thought he was a twat when I was a kid. Nowadays I'd just call him an arrogant cunt.

I think we should leave it there LB, don't want to spoil a nice thread. Can you personal message on here?

We had to wear shorts at Ecclesall Juniors until the 4th year (year 6 in modern parlance). One kid turned up in shorts on day 1 of the 4th year but had long trousers the next day. No shorts at big school.

Bear in mind this was a comprehensive in the late 60s/early 70s. For younger readers, it would be like wearing a shellsuit to school.

Remember my 2nd ever day at abbeydale had to go to the hall for PE , everyone all whites on and pumps but one kid turned up in full football kit ,with boots and shinpads. He was mercilessly bullied by Howard Wilkinson and Dick Bate who nicknamed him Scuttle after the Benny Hill character. This stuck with him right up to leaving school and he never regained his confidence again despite being a really nice kid. Bastard that Wilkinson ,full weight.

So Howard Wilkinson was in actual fact a child abuser by today's PC standard?

I fucking hope he wasn't a master

What a fantastic photo that is yet what intrigues me is the sight of the old Bramall Lane end before the BL stand was built. I've posted before that I recalled watching the construction of the BL stand with my Dad who is no longer with us. Although he took me to matches in the mid 60's I can't recollect seeing the old Lane end. Has anyone got any images of the Lane end prior to the BL stand being built.

Thanks in advance.

You can see the Lane End in the below video. Two or three weeks after the match, the Lane End was pulled down

Marvellous. A couple of things:
- the pitch. Wow.
- the united player who took corners placed the ball close to the flag rather than on the edge of the quadrant as now
- the keepers kicking style is very different to modern kicking - much more straight on if you know what I mean

And Mick Jones shoulder barge goal. Not a prayer in today's game.

Wonder if it was the specialist school and boy scouts uniform shop at the back of the cathedral?

I've had to stop using the specialist shops due to my eyesight failing!

The more I think about it they may have had an outlet for their goods at the big department stores.

The current Bramall Lane stand was started in 1965. I vaguely remember the old BL stand - quite shallow, probably only 25 to 30 steps and an old tin roof. When they pulled it down prior to starting work on the current stand we played (I think) Leicester one winter. The away fans lit a fire with the timbers still lying around.

Fulham cup game I think. We won 3-1, 22 Jan 1966.

Think it does. He was involved with Sheffield Eagles when they started. Tried to get us playing rugby at Abbeydale. Lasted one lesson.
