Put the statement forward again in a few years time and you might be nearer the mark.

You have not read any of the posts properly Barney. It's about one year on - when the lad has played 40 first team games. If he's still boy wonder then we have a major asset. That's the point. The whole dilemma for the owners, as ever.

Have another look at the o.p. and the thread as it develops. Find the theme by reading it through. In the past you have accused me of preaching and these days I throw out discussion topics. Martial starting to take off this season IMO. Had a decent first season when he wore the #9 before Zlatan arrived. Then unfortunate to be pushed out wide. Would do well centrally for them IMO alongside Lukaku.

Brooks is better though. Not at 19/20. Just overall.

You're referring to Brooks here in the present tense, not future. Since he moved to Man Utd for £35m or whatever it was, you're directly questioning whether Brooks is as good as a £35m player. Having already made this statement, you then expand on that by speculating about how good Brooks will be after 40 games. Your post doesn't in any way question or suggest that Brooks might be nearing Martial's level after 40 games. You'd already made that comparison with how Brooks is playing currently.

You're referring to Brooks here in the present tense, not future. Since he moved to Man Utd for £35m or whatever it was, you're directly questioning whether Brooks is as good as a £35m player. Having already made this statement, you then expand on that by speculating about how good Brooks will be after 40 games. Your post doesn't in any way question or suggest that Brooks might be nearing Martial's level after 40 games. You'd already made that comparison with how Brooks is playing currently.

Barney, I see where you have misunderstood along the way. Have another read and the comparison was really Brooks now/ Martial then - obvious to me but I wrote it!! The 40 games on thing was my direct comparison with Martial and even then not really - know what I mean? just a yardstick. Say half that in monetary terms but at the same time include some incredulity at Martial's transfer fee and wages. It all comes together if we can find a mug like VanGaal and Man Utd.

I don't seriously believe Brooks should be the most expensive ever teenager, now do I? In 12 months who knows though - that's the whole point. It's an extreme example to show just what we may have hold of here.

I see what you're saying, but you're agreeing with me that you compared Brooks now vs Martial when he signed for Man Utd. Martial 'then' signed for £35m. Brooks obviously wouldn't go for anywhere close to that right now.

I think what doesn't help in this situation is that we've had a fair few young players in recent times, who've shown themselves to be exceptional and gone on to sign for Prem clubs.

Problem is they've nearly all been defenders- Walker, Naughton, Maguire, Lowton, Ramsdale.

The one exception - DCL (GLTTL), is the only one people were scratching their heads about, as he couldn't even get in our first team.

So we're not used to attacking prospects of this level emerging.

As good as brooks has been, let's not forget it's been about 4 games in the championship. While martial was playing for man united at the top of the sport
