Surprised no one has even mentioned Walsall '81. I was at the BDM as a 14 year old two years before, and at most of the other darkest of dark days in the all of the darkly dark years since, but Walsall was the first time I'd ever seen grown men cry. And, let us not forget, it was (and still is) technically THE worst day in the history of the club. But without Walsall there would be no Darlington. So how can I possibly consign it to Room 101?
No, for me it's Stein '94 and Hopkin '97 that should go. Why? In a word, "hope".
In '94 our safety was all but assured before, during, and right up to the 90th of 90 minutes. Indeed, it was only as the other scores came through on our tinny transistors after full time, that the Survival Fancy Dress Party went colder than Boundary Park on a wet Tuesday night in January.
In '97 we hadn't realised that we suffered from a terminal case of Perpetual Play-Off Paralysis yet, so we actually went there in hope of winning the bloody thing (however ridiculous that might sound to the young 'uns). Until minute #90 left us "feeling sad all over", that is.
But that was then, and this is now. So the two I want to go are Boro and Cardiff '17. If we erase them our current record in La Liga is P5 W5 D0 L0...
