Very good player for us Ossie, the superb goal at Southend will live long in the memory for those lucky enough to have seen it,

As will Cockerill's last ditch block on the line to prevent a certain equaliser 2 minutes later... my heart literally sank when that Southend player pulled the trigger, only for Cockerill to appear from nowhere ! As you say Arnott's goal was class, perhaps his finest moment in a Blades shirt.

I remember once having a conversation with him in Sinatras way back when.
I asked him why he didn't score more goals.
He cockily replied that wasn't his job. His job was to create goals.
My following question was, " Why don't you create more goals "
Can't believe he told to fook off

My favourite ever Utd goal ,Hefferlump running the full length of the pitch to celebrate. I knew we were up that day and a brilliant weekend in Canvey (for 10 minutes) and then London followed. Arnott was a class player.

Arnott was a very good player, and that goal at Southend was pure brilliance. A piece of magic. There was no assist. Everything was down to Arnott. And it was priceless to us at the time. Had that goal not been scored, we would not have been promoted.

Quality player Kevin Arnott, enjoyed watching him back in the 80s signed on a free by another Macken, non other than Ian Portefield
Porterfield was also an ex Owl of course. Shall we overlook that?

I didn't know that they get everywhere! Just checked Ian Porterfield's details on Wikipedia, he died on September 11th 2007, ten years ago tomorrow.

Though I must confess to being a bit worried a week or so later when we lost to Wimbledon and Bolton in consecutive games!

And when Hull scored at Burnley after 30 seconds!

Fortunately I was on holiday abroad when that game was played. I got the result the following morning from a newspaper stand that sold English newspapers! Although I do remember being on edge for most of the day and the toilet roll seemed a bit depleted.

Apart from the Arnott goal, It's probably Port Vale and Bristol Rovers to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for just about getting over the line that season. Although I also remember Bob Atkins pulling a good goal out of the hat at Rotherham around that time as well!

The days before we could find out results from anywhere in the world! I remember as a child being on holiday in Cornwall and listening to a nearby car radio to get the results. I knew we had won at Wigan from the tone of James Alexander Gordon's voice but couldn't hear what the score was!

I suppose I could have found out on the night if I'd taken out another mortgage and made a phone call to Bramall Lane.

Arnott was a classy footballer, in particular, a very good passer of the ball. I don't remember the goal at Southend that some of you spoke of, but I remember him playing for us against Everton at Goodison Park in a Cup match and he was excellent that night. Didn't look out of place against First Division opposition.

However... (sorry to spoil it for you fellas...)

He was powder-puff weak, he rarely made tackles and he didn't have any pace or height. He was one of those players who, if you gave him the ball in space he could do lovely things with it, but he was no battler and when the going got tough he was nowhere to be seen. The reason why Sunderland got shut of him is because he just didn't do it regularly enough. His contribution to Sheffield United was similar, a few moments of class, following by long periods of nothingness.

His contribution to Sheffield United was that the played an integral part in helping us gain promotion in the 83/84 season,he was however fond of a drink or three and not as dedicated to his profession as he should have been

Joe Bolton another Mackem? on the other hand... Could never figure out why Joe Bolton and John Burridge had legend status.

We scraped promotion that year with Arnott, Cockerell. I thought Cockerill was the better player. I remember Arnott playing well against Port Vale in a midweek night game I think we won 3-1 and Arnott scored twice. Just going from memory. We played badly against Wimbledon and away at Bolton. Eddie Charlton was sat in front of me for the Wimbledon match but left before all the trouble started. Mel Eves scored a belter I think but back then the Wombles always beat us.

yep. Used to live in Eckington, same as me at that time, and he was always in the pub or the betting shop.

Glen Cockerill was twice the player Arnott was. He was tremendous. One of the best midfielders we've ever had imo.

Only thinking about Arnott the other day and trying to compare him with Coutts. Would he have got into our last year's team?
Oh and yes, Old Blade. I'd forgotten that if you couldn't get to a radio or in front of a TV shop, you'd find a phone box and phone United or the away club and wait ...... Quite often you wouldn't get through and wouldn't know. Or phone home instead and having gone through all the shit about the weather and how everyone is wherever you are my mother would say I didn't know they were playing love. You kids have never had it so good- except for ringtones, internet failure. wifi passwords........

Comparing Ossie Arnott to Coutts ,to me is not a bad shout, both oodles of natural talent, both great touch and both can/could pick a pass, long or short range,a dedicated Arnott would have got into the Champions 16/17 team I feel,he would not have lasted long under CW if he had not shown the same commitment and dedication that Paul Coutts has done these last 17 months.

I always thought the biggest contributors to the 83/84 season promotion were Edwards, Morris and Stancliffe. McHale and Arnott in midfield definitely played their part (and their performances were a vast improvement on the previous season), Bolton and Heffernan were solid enough as full backs without being brilliant, they were big lads who certainly helped bulk up the defence if nothing else. And Waugh/Tomlinson did well enough as the goalkeepers in that promotion squad. Trusson (at the start of the season) and Cockerill (at the end of the season) were both excellent in their short spells at the club that season. Always thought if we'd have had both for the full season we'd have comfortably gone up, perhaps even as champs.

Arnott played his part that season in getting us up & that goal at Southend was very important especially considering the end to the season at Burnley

Personally thought the lad above who played for us both was better & definitely liked a tackle !

Hopefully that will be the only positive thing said about Bolton on this forum this week.
