I think that he is most similar to Clarke out of all the strikers mentioned. When he was younger, possibly more like Cole but as he ages, he’ll rely on his physical presence to hold the ball up a bit more and won’t have as much pace in behind. I think he improves our squad a little and provides competition for Clarke but I’m still concerned we don’t have the pace we need up there. But maybe that will provide the opportunity for Brooks to step up.
Yes I think a lot of people complaining about our lack of strikers have missed the point that Brooks can fulfill that role. He has shown that he can score goals. He so nearly scored against Barnsley. He my not be a target man or someone who will hold the ball up but get him running at defenders with his his dribbling ability and pace particularly if he comes on with say 20-30 minutes to play he will be a defenders nightmare. If we had signed Cole it might have limited his opportunities. Let's use him more.

Agreed - Brooks just behind Sharp/Donaldson/Clarke will be just as much of a goal threat.

Going to grab myself to a big helping of this after today... (Ha, I wish!)

Yes, I'm here, and I'm delighted that he has scored two goals.
But 33 year olds get injured and we have typically already seen it

Funny you didn't mention injury prone in your original post (FYI, "Leg's gone" doesn't mean that.)

Also, "uninspired"... judging by his debut, looks pretty inspired to me. Nevermind though m8, you'll find something to have a good crywank to sooner or later.

The only person having a crywank is you. And all because somebody doesn't share your opinions

One positive is that we now have a striker who can play up front on his own.

And should we play like that, with attacking midfielders in behind, I think he'd work well with Brooks.

Indeeeeed. See the 2nd goal today!

Hopefully a sign of things to come. They could bring the best out of each other and Donaldson could be considerably more prolific in our team than he was for Birmingham.

I'm just praying he isn't badly injured..... massive blow if he is.

Doesn't sound too bad

Or..... you jumped in two footed with your usual negative drivel and it completely backfired on you?

Backfired on me ???????????
Why ?????
I'm glad Donaldson scored two goals and if he scores 20 this season I'll be even happier,
But he's hardly a major player for the future is he ? and that's what our new signings were supposed to be.

However good or not Donaldson is, he is here because he knows Wilder, he was cheap, and nobody else challenged us for him

You've never happier when you have something to complain about.
I'm having difficulty taking you seriously as even if we were top you'd try to find a negative.

You're just seeking attention and your games are growing tiresome.
You must be really unhappy this weekend seeing our debutant score 2 in such another comfortable victory.

I'd have a season away from the forum because it's going to get more and more difficult to keep up the negativity without looking like an idiot. Think you're going to have a really miserable season because Wilder is becoming our best manager in decades.

The trick is to sign players who can do it here and now. And Donaldson just proved today that he can. Of course he's not one for the future if you're looking more than two seasons ahead. But he's a very good player and just what we need now.

It's to do with pace as you say - CW was looking to the other two that we missed to provide that. CW in his recent interview said CD provides "a bit of pace" - from that I, rightly or wrongly, infer that 1 - CD wasn't his first choice, 2 - CD doesn't give him everything he wanted - therefore square peg in round hole. I know i'm being overly harsh, I'll gladly eat my words if he plays well for us.

Enjoyed thi supper?

Some folks just can't stand to be wrong can they? JJBlade and Jon P on this thread for example. They clearly nailed their colours to the mast saying Donaldson wasn't good enough (in whatever words they may have chosen) and now he's showed what he can do they can't bear to admit they were wrong and are still looking for something negative to find about him.

JonP - Wilder had said that we were looking for more pace "and power" up top. He used the words, "someone who can run in behind". This is why we signed Donaldson - not just for pace alone - although even at 33 he looks to have more of that than any other of our strikers!

I will be really honest, I was negative about signing Donaldson purely based on his age.
Yesterday's first goal (let alone whole performance) proved I was wrong.
We've been crying out for a striker that can make (and take) his own chances.
I like Sharp, Evans, Lavery and Leon but they need chances. Dont get me wrong we've got the players to create plenty now but to have a player with the strength, speed, skill and directness to score a goal like that is really exciting!

Is that now the measure of a 'good' player?

I don't seem to recall Manyoo and Chelski being in for Fleck, JOC, Stephens or Coutts, so they must be shit too.

Give it a rest man!

What you talking about Willis ?
Coutts was brought in off the scrapheap, unwanted at Derby, unwanted by anybody else, and even unwanted by us before Wilder arrived
JOC was a complete unknown to anybody except Wilder
Stephens ended up a League Two player due to his inability to hold down a place at a higher placed club.

Fleck is the only one out of that bunch that we could have had any competition for, but the competition would have only come from another League One club.

I've already said that I'm delighted that these players have performed and I'm also delighted that Donaldson scored twice on his debut, but the fact remains we get players that are not wanted elsewhere, because as soon as any competition arrives on the scene we lose out.

Quite why anyone feels the need to debate anything to do with the Blades with JJBlade is simply beyond me .

JJ hates the Blades and hates the City he lives in . He stopped going to the Lane years ago and has vowed never to return .

I used to debate ad nauseum his standpoint on both the Blades and Sheffield over on Bladesmad untill I finally realised it was a complete waste of my time .

Opinions are opinions though and he has every right to aire his wherever and however he choses . Though quite why he spends an inordinate amount of time debating the Blades fortunes or otherwise when he turned his back on us years ago vowing never to return is frankly baffling . Even more so when SBT who's met him maintains he's not a fucking idiot but actually ok :tumbleweed:

Being fair - wilder had always said we have to be clever and get players from different pots.

Duffy last year was 30 odd and free but could do it at the level required. First impressions of Donaldson is the same think he can do it in the here and now. And surely that's the entire point a good cost effective signing has been made to add to the team - wilder was clever enough to see that even if no one else in the league wanted him.

And let's face it we couldn't afford a 27/28 year old Donaldson at his prime.

There were no higher bids than we received for DCL, Murphy, Adams etc. But the same criteria isn't applied to their transfers.

Wilder has shown already how focused he is
Clayton is as much a here and now player for us as hanson was last season
I doubt very much if we get in the prem Donaldson will get as much game time there as Hanson is getting here

no room for sentiment but horses for courses
CW only has eyes on the prize on offer this season , at 50k donaldson is fantastic business, experienced championship player with a new challenge

at 25k a goal in 70 minutes play its far better value than jordan rhodes 3m a goal in 6 months
