Clayton Donaldson, oh how I've wished him to be playing for us over the years.
From first encountering him at Crewe he's always impressed me with his qualities.
Now we've got him, albeit at 33 and maybe not the power of old, I'm still pleased.
Injury free and boosted by Wilders management, I reckon we can get a season or even two of good service from this fellah.

I can remember having a similar reaction to a similarly ageing, strong, and formerly-pacy striker we signed – had always rated him, and I was delighted he'd signed as I was sure he was exactly what we needed.

We sold Barry Hayles two months later...

Square peg in a round hole this lad. Not quite what we wanted but let's shove him in anyway.

Surely if he wasn't wanted CW wouldn't have signed him?

How do you mean square peg round hole? If it's to do with pace CW has already stated we need pace, personally I think the other couple of signings we missed out on were the ones to provide the raw pace CW is on about. CD is here to provide competition for Clarke IMO, if thats the case he's most definitely a round peg in a round hole.

What? To play for us under Atkins, Weir or Adams? Some good that would have done us.

Give the lad a chance, he hasn't played for us yet.

Yes or even Clough.

He might be fine but I would have preferred the younger version of him.

Aye, you got that one wrong Loughborough ☺
I'm confident I haven't got this wrong. (No doubt you'll remind me if he fails!)

I don't know if I'm being slow with it being Friday afternoon, but I'm not sure what you mean? :)
On my pc and phone, if I decide to 'reply' start typing and then change my mind and delete it all, next time I go on same thread and start to reply to another post, the typing I had previously deleted is sitting there as a greyed out draft.
If I delete it again and add new reply, all is fine.
If it's not deleted again, then the earlier. unwanted reply appears in front of my intended reply.

If you start typing a reply, what's the correct way to cancel?

I'll tag our technical expert... Foxy :)

It's to do with pace as you say - CW was looking to the other two that we missed to provide that. CW in his recent interview said CD provides "a bit of pace" - from that I, rightly or wrongly, infer that 1 - CD wasn't his first choice, 2 - CD doesn't give him everything he wanted - therefore square peg in round hole. I know i'm being overly harsh, I'll gladly eat my words if he plays well for us.

Fair enough.

I took it as CD gives him everything he needed from CD, CW's comment about him being a "Big one for us " and "I've tried to sign him three or four times" would indicate to me he's certainly not an after thought. It would, however, look at much better deal if we'd got one of the others over the line to, would've ticked all boxes for me.

He may not be as quick as he used to be but yet again neither are Billy, Ched &Leon. Having another striker come in to the club with a bit more pace might make the aforementioned try a little harder to improve their speed. That's a bonus without CD kicking a ball or scoring yet. If Chris thinks that he is fast enough, then he is, even if he was not CW's first choice signing for that role.

I'm going to buck what seems to be the trend and say I'm happy with this signing. He's quicker than Billy, and we've sorely lacked pace up front. He's also 6 foot 1 and a big unit, so might actually give us some proper aerial presence from crosses, set pieces, corners etc. Doesn't look like the sort of player that's easily bullied or knocked off the ball, so could do very well as a foil for Sharp.

I understand people's concerns about his age, but let's at least give him a chance. If he starts at Sunderland, and does well, then Clarke will have to work hard to get his starting spot back in my opinion.

Nearly 24 hours on and I'm much more positive about signing Donaldson. I think he's gonna be a Blades favourite to be honest! He'll batter opposing centre halves and will give his all, be a foil for billy and will pitch in with some goals too. He's very good in the air too.

Excellent purchase...Quick, tricky and sees a chance..Shame to miss out on Irvine, though

I really don't see any downside to this purchase.
One year deal, therefore its in CD's court to show us he's still capable and earn another contract.
Proven Championship record at 1:3 goal per game (approx)
Worked with Tufty previously and rated by CW
We are short in the position.
Apparently an asset to the dressing room re experience/confidence/role model
Think Billy Whitehurst, Neill Shipperley, Rob Hulse

I wanted some pace but if he just slightly helps Billy up there ie holds the ball up, wins some flick ons, knocks the shit out of some of the defenders, then it could be the difference between Sharp getting into the teens and getting into the twenties!

He's 33 going on 41, He's our new Booker, Chief etc.

Best signing of the season, going to have some fun with this guy. Nailed on to score the winner at the sty.

Nailed on to score the winner against brum

That suitcase is not as good as my Briggs & Riley.

Lifetime guarantee and made of ballistic nylon don't you know.

From that deadline day article:

4:21 p.m.

The Donaldson deal is back on. "It's happening," Wilder says. "Looks like we're paying £50,000." Knill doesn't look up from his phone, opining: "That's a real good one, that. A real good one." Wilder nods. "But we need Devante done."

"A real good one"

That to me suggests he's one we're very happy to have.

And he doesn't fill the same role as Sinclair or Cole, he's a different player. But he still offers us more pace than we've got.

He was probably intended to be Hanson's replacement, but because we didn't sign any other strikers as expected, Hanson's had to stay.

Proven Championship striker. He'll get goals. I'm ok with this.

Incedently, I met Clayton Donaldson once when he played for Crewe. He was in Cash Convertors buying a shitload of DVDs. I told him I saw him score a hat trick for Hibs against Kilmarnock, he seemed genuinely pleased to be reminded of this. (He didn't score loads for us being our third choice striker at the time). Salt of the earth

I'm quite pleased with the big Clayton signing. OK, he might not be quite as fast as he once was, but he's still fairly quick, and has strength. He is an awkward player for defenders to deal with.

Add to that, he's got plenty of Championship experience now. Which is what we want.

I remember seeing him at the Lane when he was with Brentford. Had a great game.
