Apologies if this has been done before but I saw a letter from Matthew Bell (flashing blade editor) in this month's edition of When Saturday Comes, the football magazine. He was pulling them up on an article the month before when they had described DCL as an "Everton prodigy". As Matt pointed out DCL came out of Shireclife, as did Walker, Jags, Naughton, Lowton and Maguire. It got me thinking what a blades academy 11 might look like. Got to be current professionals. And where would they finish in the league. My team would be

Long ( ahead of Ramsdale due to experience)

Walker Jags Maguire Naughton
Lowton Whiteman
Quinn Brooks
Sharp. DCL

Probably forgotten someone really obvious.

Finish position. 3rd in Championship. Some England players, but also a couple of league 1 players

Which Quinn? Did Tonge come via academy? Kevin Davis?

Stephen. Alan joined as a fully mature porker and Keith never made the grade.

Tonge was a Citeh(?) reject but definitely developed through the academy.

Davis was pre-academy and I think, released on schoolboy terms. I'm sure Silent Blade will be along to correct this shortly.

Was wondering if you meant Wayne Quinn

Our Academy started in 2001. Jags and Monty were pre-Academy. Tonge played a few games. Steve Quinn joined us when he was 19. Brooks when he was 17

My Academy X1 would be

1. Long
2. Walker
3. Naughton
4. Cresswell
5. Maguire
6. McFadzean (K)
7. Lowton
8. Reed
9. Sharp
10. Law
11. Whiteman

Would have included Ian Ross (one of the best Academy players I have seen) but his League career stalled from 2006.

Sorry mate and I'd completely forgotten him.

Fortunately for me and as I confidently predicted, Silent Blade has come along to establish that the official academy only started in 2001 so my Alan Quinn call is still a good one.

Silent Blade's academy XI is obviously a piss take as he's put Forte and Reed ahead of Tonge and Jags.
Does he know nowt, this alleged so called Blade? Pah!

No

I think the best academy team should be made up of players young enough to turn out on Saturday so Davis and Monty are I'm afraid past it.

I know they are not in your team Silent but included as a general response to the thread.

To be honest I was including any graduates from our youth system who are currently playing, which is why I included Jags etc.

Forgot mcfadz and he might start in a back 5. We do seem to be good at defenders, I've already got Lowton in midfield in my side.

Cresswell?

Actually that is quite a well balanced side with full backs/ centre halves and defensive midfielders/wingers.

Just Billy up front is a weakness, so maybe Mitch would have to join him?

Ryan Cresswell. Was really impressed with him when I saw him play for our Academy. Had a bad injury but went onto play for Bury , Rotherham, Southend and Northampton

Never saw Jordan Robertson, Danny Reet wasnt bad when I saw him, cant think of any other big strikers. I stopped watching Academy/ reserves matches about 10 years ago

Just seen Callum MacFadzean in the petrol station at Birley. Wondered what had happened to him, always played better in CM rather than wide or Full Back. Playing for Guisley now according to his Wiki.

Got me thinking, we've had some players with fantastic potential that never quite made it.

I know Ian Ross and Colin Marrison, saw a photo of their school footy team other day, John Forte, James Ashmore and Jake Speight all in there with Ross and Marrison. What a team that must've been. Imagine turning up against a team with 5 future pro-footballers in it

Did he play against Yeovil in the Playoff semi? Seem to remember he looked a quality player considering his lack of experience.

Didn't seem to get a sniff after that.

He scored didn’t he? (Memory is hazy)
