After all the discussion about these tarts I followed Crabby's advice and sought out the stall in the Moor Market this morning. Snaffled* a couple together with a Waterall's pork pie and a bag of scratchings. Heavenly. Life's a bitch isn't it.

I hope you wrote that in haste...surely a woman who is raped, becomes pregnant, then decides she doesn't wish to give birth, is entitled to such a decision? Why would her social background impact on this decision? If your child was dying and the only available medical help was a surgeon who was 100% upper class, would you deny your child the chance to live?

I happen to have been brought up in what would be referred to as a working class environment, of course it informed and shaped me, but what it didn't do was to instil such a sense of tribal loyalty that I couldn't consider a more rounded intellectual position. A sound idea is just that, where it originates from is unimportant, unless you somehow reason that because the author of said idea is from an entirely different social background to yourself that the idea isn't worthy of consideration?

You can't really 'discuss' politics with most people who have polar opposite views, whichever side of the fence you're on. No one has ever listened to the view of an individual or read a post on the net that makes them abandon lifelong beliefs.
Particularly extremists. If someone said to me 'I used to be a fascist but now I'm a communist' I'd think 'no, you've never been either you contrarian simpleton'.

Arguing politics is like arguing religion. You're rarely, if ever, going to convert someone from one faith to another but you'll certainly piss a lot of people off by trying.
