Are you sure she didn't mean the number 2 that went down Coldwell Lane and was the 'outer circular'?

Wherever you were in Sheffield you'd see a 2 even on cul de sacs, in Meadowhall, in the market etc. A mate reckons that on drivers birthday's, SYT would give them a number 2 and tell them to drive where they want.

The No 2 was truly an otherworld phenomenom - it used to appear every now and again near us, but I'd never dare get on it.

By 'Central', I wasn't meaning the location - that would be the Peace Gardens (too open-plan and prone to the druggies, winos and beggars who blight every town centre). I was referring to Endcliffe's ambience. Surrounded by fairly built-up environment with a low hum of traffic noise yet many opportunities to find a sun-dappled retreat where you can lose yourself for a bit. Like this:

or this (that's the Dakota Building where John Lennon was shot):

On a separate note and the same area, I think the 'tree-huggers' who are objecting to Amey cutting down 'healthy' trees are talking bollocks. While nobody should applaud cutting down ancient trees, the ones on Rustlings Road (much like those on Sandygate Road) were planted eons ago when these roads were no more than cart tracks. Now they're busy roads and the roots are destroying the pavements. Get rid and plant more suitable trees.

Wrong post to be talking about tree huggers but even after today's great result, it still warrants a reply.

The Victoria's created the present tree lined roads and avenues of Sheffield for the future. They knew that trees made for a healthier environment, though they didn't call it that, just that tree lined roads made everyone feel better. We have tree lined streets which are the envy of the rest of the UK and they are been destroyed in pursuit of profit. Simple as that.

Yes youre right ,the number 2 was the circular ,that had double deckers ,my Nan used to take me. But the 51 had single deckers for years after the other routes ,I presumed it was the weather up Lodge Moor but don't know.

It was, and still, is the 51. Oddly it is the oldest bus route in Sheffield (and not the 51st oldest), and they have two buses running the route in the old Sheffield Corporation and SYT liveries. Both look strrets better than the dreary First Bus grey/purple.

I have done the MOT on the bus in the old Sheffield livery a few years back, First Mainline have one in the old Rotherham blue livery too. Not seen one in Doncaster's old red colours and Barnsley always were Yorkshire traction which was bought out by Stagecoach. Stagecoach was crazy, buses on the 52 route past my home would go to Chesterfield where two mechanics would take them to the Mansfield depot and present them for test where a Sheffield bloke (me) would give them a MOT test.

View attachment 29922 Pair of two tone sta press , black Fred Perry & a pair of Manchester Martins

Did you have a pair of yellow Sta Press or were you boring ?

Boring CHL never thought I'd be able to pull off the canary look , seemed to recall a burgundy & black combo and dark blue and black I think ?
Also had a pair of DM shoes that you could see yer face in

The brand was Sta-Prest. Such things were crucially important to a young lad in those days, signifying as it did razor sharp creases that would lacerate your finger. Sta Press might have been the Woolworth equivalent, as part of their Winfield range, no self-respecting mod would have given them house room.

Mods ? We are talking skinheads trig . Two tone trousers ..... two tone music :)

I will agree on one thing though , no self respecting mod would have been seen dead in a pair of Sta Prest yellow trousers and 18 hole Doc Martin's . :p

Used to go to Western Road/Westways school, (68 - 74) Western Road is a lovely old tree lined Road, that hasn't changed much since it was built.
I only found out recently that the trees are actually a war memorial, each tree commemorates an ex pupil that was lost to the horrors of WW1, so pulling them down is actually destroying part of our history.

I reckon, (with no Spanish to speak of) its River Plate v Rayo Vallecano in a friendly tournament in 1978.

Spanish readers will confirm (or otherwise) that the text says that River had beaten us at Bramall Lane just before?

Its all a bit confusing because Rayo's kit was the same as Rivers (it was based on the Argentinian clubs) and so River wore a change strip almost identical kit to ours of the time?

Frinstance, the No. 10 a couple of posts above is Norberto Alonso - the River Plate player.

this is my guess

No self respecting skin or suedehead would wear yellow trousers.

Even if you don't know any Spanish, you can probably recognise 'vencio al Sheffield 2 a 1' - 'they beat Sheffield 2-1'.

That's right. The text says that Rayo didn't have a second/change shirt, so they wore River's. The 'villa de madrid ' tournament was a 4-team tournament hosted by athletico madrid who in1978 invited Rayo Vallecano, River & Derby County. After that tournament finished River came to Bramall Lane and won 2-1.
